Regular gateclosing.

So Roger Wilco the Bard started his career with mediocre set of skills. No herbalism or healing. Decided to go for herbalism since he was candle born. Started VERY carefully going to ID for early levelling and some items to help survive. Quickly found Teleport book which helped a lot. Didn't get any decent armour untill darkforge and no great weapons in the whole game. Found an altar in the puppy cave and had unbelievable luck with herb patterns in the big room (five 2*2 stoma patches) so decided to go all in with three precrowns at level 14. Ended up with "only" two precrowns and crowning because I forgot about the screen refresh bug for alignment when saccing. First precrown was the quarrell of uselessness and second was the black tome of good starting money from dwarftown shop. Crowning got me the trusted one which I thought sucked ass, until I realised that it actually gives great DV/PV with all the resistances I'm ever going to need. At the end with smithed/enchanted gear I was basically untouchable by almost all the mosters in the game (ring of immunity from the Casino didn't hurt either).

Carefull is really the word that describes this game untill after ToEF. I never descended below dwarftown other than to do the quest before I had already done pyramid, griffyard, darkforge, RotHK, rift, ToEF and killed the Water dragon mommy (came really close to dying there but finished her with darkness and acid balls, netted about 5 levels, nothing special in the treasure). I was somewhere around level 33 at this point. After this I descended straight 'till the shortcut doing everything that needed to be done. Killed artificer for anvil and went to do some smithing. As said after this I was pretty much invulnerable. Accidentally killed a cat by running to him around a corner so didn't get the ring. Not much of a hassle since catlord fell easily and with find weakness and backstabbing at 100 I was doing ebough crits as it was. After smithing I bought my SoCR (had way more than I needed from the weird tome and dwarven mystic) back from dwarftown and started the final descent.

Giant vault gave me long sting (never used) and a regular dwarven chaos knight dropped the artifact pickaxe. Meleed earth temple being surrounded without difficulties with a club of penetration and hit level 50 while there. After that I decided I was way too overpowered to have any caution any more so I just magic mapped and teleported rest of the levels. Stood toe to toe with the arch mage first meleeing with poison hands and then finishing with some humanoid slayers (had over 800 hp and dv around 130 when defencive so it was a breeze). Sliding with a PoUselessness gave me a sling (this guy had the worst luck with artifacts I've ever had). In D50 I read my 3 scrolls of familiar summoning and got two writhing masses and a greater earth elemental. The Elemental gor all the way to very experienced killing the foos and actually ended up killing most of the Balors and helping a lot with fisty. Not that I needed the help but it did speed things up. Or actually I prolly would've finished faster without the pet elemental since he kept hanging around so close that I didn't use my ball spells all that much, but this was more fun. Anyways we killed everything with my trysty elemental, closed the gate, got cleanced by the unicorn and yelled "Finally!" in the middle of the night so loud that I prolly woke my neighbors.

I'll try to post the memorial after this (I'm pretty sure I know how;)

RoI and you complain???

Got Fire immunity in crowning and didn't do the blue D caves so RoI was basically "just" a [+5,+5] ring. IMO it's way overrated since resistances are so easy to come by in adom. Can't really imagine it to have any significant impact on any game. Of course it's nice to have since there are very few really good rings in the game, but the effect ain't that noticeable compared to some of the really game-breaking (meaning giving overconfidence and breaking your char in half 'cause you do something stupid) artifacts.

So now I have a monk and a bard win. Can't really decide what I'd try next. How about pure chaotic DE Priest going for a regular chaos god just for RP reasons.

Fighters (bit challenging, they're not exceedlingly good)

Get an acid blast from a wyrm, or from Andy (i think he can cast those). Getting a blast from something you resist but aren't iummune is sometimes awful, i remember being insta killed by an emperor lich that way, frost.

Is that from Space Quest series? They're awesome! :D (but somehow I've never managed to fully complete any game)

That would be correct. Finished the first on my own (my dad helped a bit I must admit) and the others eventually with walkthroughs. Actually Space Quest 1 is the first game I ever finished (if I remember correctly I finished super mario bros almost a year later) and it's mostly responsible for my early English learning.

Dark elf/gnomish Beastie :)
Grey elf wizzie (pushover)
Barbarians.

I believe these were suggestions for what to play next. Won't play another gnome for a while, I don't like how wizzies get so overpowered that it becomes boring. Barbarians always bring out my own stupidity by being overpowered in the middle game and giving false sence of security. Healers I don't like on priciple. So perhaps I'll go for a pally or a fighter when I feel like bashing and a priest when I feel like casting spells (I know they can get overpowered too but still). Actually I think I'll skip the priest since it could end up feeling too much like this bard (who started with detect item status).

Yup... a pure basher it will be. Fighter should be nice since it shouldn't become too powerfull too soon to give that cozy feeling that leads to YASD. Or a beastie since then I wouldn't have to complain about not getting decent weapons (but that'd be too much like playing a monk)

Fighter and Paladin are pretty similar but Paladin has the advantage since they are very capable casters in the mid- to late-game.

Well, that depends entirely on whether paladin gets justifier... if they do, they're nothing like fighters ;)

Beasties have also the advantage of having magnificient crowning gifts. And are deadly with their hands. AND start with herbalism.
Monks ar ebest with polemarms.

Thief is pretty fun too. In fact, if I get another Candle sign to pop
up, I might roll one and mess around with it...

Won again. This is getting too easy ;)

Won't post a new thread since this one had nothing too special. Dwarwen barbarian crowned with vanquisher and wearing robes of resistance from casino. Normal gate closing. Digged to the levers, killed balors with vanquisher almost dying to corruption. Meleed basically everything including archmage, catlord and the blue wyrm.

Vanquisher makes everything easy. :b

You should try an assassin next imo. Still pretty easy but should provide some challenges depending your race/starsign choice.

Vanquisher doesn't make everything easy. I've found that using a two-hander limits the DV you can get so much that in many situations a good one-hander and a shield is much better. In my win I used big punch+protector much more than the vanquisher. Vanquisher really became feasible against really tough opponents when I had 800+ HP so I could just berserk+tremendous blow the tough monsters and know they wouldn't kill me in the rounds they get attacking me (It's really satisfying to hit a balor to critical in one blow and then chase him down as he's running away).

I was actually thinking a hurtling ranger for my next, with a couple limitations to get more challenge. Although this would also work with an assassin.

1: Only knives and daggers in melee and thrown rocks as missiles (good bye slaying ammo and potions of blindness, welcome neeble and sting). BTW can you poison rocks?

2: No starvation or sickness to increase stats, no good learner talent, no killing ubermonsters with darkness nor any other such borderline exploits.

3: No gambling in Casino.

4: No carrying RNG fodder, which is to say that everything I carry must be realistically usefull at some point

5: no extensive grinding. Herbs for stats and some spence is okay. Stoma for crowning is okay. Stoma for precrowns, stairhopping id, pickpocketing gremlins and the like are forbidden.

If someone has any other ideas for making the game a bit more challenging, realistic (in it's own context), but not extreme feel free to make suggestions (or make up a name for this challenge game and start a new thread). Also if a challenge game similar to this already exists please tell me about it and I'll try that.

Try a DE Thief. You can realistically get their toughness below 10. The starting game is exceptionally hard at that point.

I'va actually once started a GE wizzy with ST 2. That was interesting. But really I'm not looking for extremely difficult, I'm looking for a bit more difficult through the whole game (not just early game).

I really like these restrictions. In fact, in my current game I have imposed some very similar restrictions on myself. It gets boring how the same blinding potions and slaying ammo make any hard fight easy, doesn't it?

One additional rule in the same spirit that I could think of is: no 7LB / Hack 'n Back technique. (Hit, step back, wait for monster, repeat).

No prayers is usually a good one to go for to add a bit of challenge.

This might be fun. I just wonder how corrupted I would get for repeatedly using the water orb.

Alternative: you may only use one prayer during the game (so you can get crowned).

This I actually don't like. Hack and back is quite essential (especially when using the restrictions above), and it can easily fail by runing to a dead end. One of my chars was actually killing a greater moloch with a vanquisher in DH when an emperor lich cut his escape ;)

Also if I put restriction to 7lb I might just as well put restrictions to the many extremely powerfull artifacts in the game or to the amount of artifacts I can equip. 7lbs can be destroyed and are very rare after all and also they are clearly meant to be extremely powerfull by design. If I happen to get a char with robes of resistance, ring of immunity, bracers of war, holy scarf, helm of 'whatever was the good one', cloak of 'whatever was the good one', 7lb and girdle of GS (also two early penetrating daggers for this challenge and a lot of increase melee XX scrolls); I'll just figure the rng likes my restrictions and wants to be nice to me (just because I'm a mathematician and have studied statistics doesn't mean I don't believe RNG is a concious being).

Ps. The reason for those "whatever was the good one" is that I haven't found any artifact cloaks or headgear since starting again with adom and I won't bother to check the GB just to list them here. You all get the idea anyways.
