View Full Version : Poor beastfighter needed to stay out of the dark

I learned my lesson about herbs! Nate the orcish beastfighter had 25 strength, 26 dexterity, and 27 toughness as of about character level 10. He didn't really find much moss but there was a square of morgia and pepper petals right next to a naturally bottlenecked room of claw bugs... burp burp munch munch farm farm. He saved the puppy, he ate a blink dog, he saw lots of cool shops get generated. He did the first quest for the old dwarf and learned to read.

Nate had some scrolls in his backpack that weren't identified, and he also had a whole bunch of other random stuff he wanted identified. He had larger stacks of two of the types of scrolls, so he figured he'd try blessing and reading them. They'd probably be identify right?

No. Scroll of defense and scroll of darkness. Defense wasn't a bad thing.

This all happened right outside of Thrundarr's house. There's a particular square between where Thrundarr's two guards stand. That square will not abide player characters stepping on it in darkness. So when Nate came back after completing the next quest and tried to enter Thrundarr's chamber, not only was he rejected in the dark, he also lost track of which square he was on because he didn't understand the rejection mechanism. He ended up attacking a guard or something; an alarm gong rang.

Most of the dwarf town didn't care; they never noticed what happened in the dark. But Waldenbrook was paying attention. He also had about ten attacks for everything my very very fast beastfighter character did... poor Nate.

Beastfighters are fun though! I'm going to have to try another soon.

Nice death.

Whereas technically dwarf town IS a safe haven, the calm before the storm, it is well worth remembering that its a really dangerous place to muck around in. Those damn dwarves are pretty tetchy, and take offense at the slightest thing. The stupid ratling is also a bit short on tolerance, and Waldenbrook is just the most closed minded interfering little bitch I ever met. Kill a cute dwarven child, thats a pounding. Stab some people, thats a pounding. Steal some stuff, thats a pounding. Try to convert the dwarves to your one true religion, thats a pounding. Wear a T-Shirt with a slightly controversial pro-freedom-of-choice-to-do-what-I-want slogan (cloths of hate), thats a pounding. I mean really.

Its just fascism man, and that dude can't even be like, pacified with herbs.

I can handle fascism when I'm the one in charge. As soon as you hand control over to someone else though, that is SO not my bag.

Yep, the slightest thing! All one does is to visit their
highest ranking leader, cast a pagan web of unholy
darkness around his gaurds, bodily attack them with
their bare hands, and all of a sudden the dwarves are
all like "Hey! Stop that!"

Funny though, one of the best ways to deal with hostile
shopkeepers is with darkness : )

Once he had meleed me once in the light it was all over. I probably should have forgotten about dwarftown after this whole incident (I escaped successfully when it immediately happened) but I went back to just check things out after a while, and noticed that most of the town was not hostile. I managed to get and do the next quest for Thrundarr (Ogre village) because I had a light source for getting back into his room and he was perfectly happy with me. All this time, the closed door of the shop had me worried in the back of my mind.

I wasn't thinking, I was tired... I think a lot of my ADOM deaths can be linked to me sitting and playing ADOM for hours on end without stopping; I stop making sense after a while!

I will try to take a serious lesson from any death I whine about here; I think that will help me eventually get a victory under my belt. In this case, the lesson is clearly "don't screw around with random unidentified items in dwarftown". Honestly, that's one I have learned and since forgotten a few times over the last ~decade of play, but I'll try to make it stick!
