Me hopes jade isn't released until it is awesome.
Make that awesome, and non-code divable. I know
nothing of java, and little of programming in general,
but I hope Biskup throws in every code encryption
known to man.

the longer the learning curve, the funner the game :)

if jade's released in dribs and drabs, the depth of the mystery will be lessened

I concur. I hope JADE's encryption is near unbreakable, and released at a near complete stage (not complete cause there are always improvements to be made after the first edition of anything).

Just a thought, but what if TB formed an agreement with the people that own the Adom server to install Jade onto that server, allow people to play via it, but not allow people to download the game?

That way, people can get to play it in its current state, report on bugs, but not do any sort of code-diving.

Come on, do you really think protection from code diving is so important to force people to play on a server, with all the inconveniences associated with that (cannot play without an internet connection, cannot play with a crappy internet connection, cannot play if your flatmate is downloading his porn, cannot play at work under restrictive proxies/firewalls, cannot play ANYMORE if the creator ceases to care about the game and discontinues the server, etc.)

I think this is in fact the only way to prevent code diving, since all code obfuscation techniques can be bypassed with enough skill and patience (people crack commercial games to break their keys, and those have a strong economic incentive to encrypt and obfuscate the code). But I think it's simply not worth it. I don't see what's so important about preventing code diving, I don't like code dived info in ADOM but no one forces me to be spoiled with it if I don't want to.

I also agree with the OP in that a release would be nice.

Having TB locked into a cave until he releases a complete, awesome game would be cool from the player's perspective, but that just doesn't work from the perspective of software development. If no one tries what you're doing you are going to have lots of bugs, even if you are a really good developer. The more people who try your software and report bugs, the better. Plus, working hours and hours on a project that one does for free without getting any feedback from users really burns motivation (and I talk from experience).

I used to think like you guys, but when I started getting experience with large software projects I realised that the "release early, release often" philosophy ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Release_early,_release_often ) is the best for any large project made in unpaid hours.

I'm not saying permanently restrict it to the server. Just while the game has yet to reach version 1.0, or perhaps some earlier but comparable point in development. Think of it as a way of performing alpha testing using the community without the code diving problem coming up before it is absolutely necessary.

The whole idea is to satisfy both TB and all those people who want to play the game in its currently-incomplete state. And as I said, it also allows bug-testing to occur early on, when it's relatively easy to fix bugs without creating new ones at the same time.
