Spawning "cursed"

My last 4 new characters have spawned cursed and unable to pray. Is this a Friday the 13th thing?

Yes, it is. Just like the New Year's Eve and Creator's Day events are. If it really bothers you, you can set the calendar forward temporarily, but hey, why not try and take it as a challenge instead? ^^
