Im fed up!!! whats the point in doing everything you possibly can to keep your stats up only to open a shop door and get paralized by 2 mimics who hit you til you die???? I keep getting to level 13/14 then something like this happens. how can you avoid getting paralized?

3 ways:
-Amulet of free action makes you immune to paralysis. They're fairly uncommon, though.
-If your PV is above about 15, you should be immune to death by ghuls and mimics. Strong paralysing monsters (master mimics, hiveminds, etc.) need a PV of about 30 or higher (and decent DV) to be relatively safe. Having fairly high (>150 or so) HP normally is enough to avoid ghul/mimic deaths as well even if your PV is a bit lower.
-Sipping a pool will occasionally give you paralysis resistance.

I haven't seen many people do this but I almost always use coward tactics outside of melee/ranged combat. It has become a habit to immedietly switch to Coward after combat/before moving in even slightly potently dangerous area.

Stone ooze death taught me something. :-)

Avoid being doomed too, and get +Fate and +Luck. This combination will greatly reduce the odds of getting paralysed and make recovery much more likely.

Don't forget sources of invisibility. Hitting an enemy will negate its effects, but it will let you zap wands or cast most spells with impunity. It can also let you just avoid the bugger. There is only one paralysing monster in the game that can see invis, and he's fairly uncommon.

Darkness is very much similar, if you have a source. You can hack away at the enemy in the dark and it won't paralyse you.

There's several that I can think of that can see invis:
Lich, master lich, lich king, emperor lich, living wall. Andor Drakon. Casino guards supposedly can too...

Yes, all liches can paralyse, as can living walls.

Heh, Andy was the only one I knew about, and him only through hearing others. Generally if something's good enough to see invis it's worth keeping your distance from...

Brown worms can also paralyze. I think carrion crawlers might be able to as well.
