This is my first win as one of the "difficult" classes, although, given the unbelievable amount of luck that I received this game, it was actually pretty straightforward as far as my wins have gone. I rolled a candle-born dwarf merchant, and, following Soirana's merchant guide, set my starting talents up for early blinging until I could get a bit stronger. First kill bandit, had 2000 gold to start so I found a spear and shield at the black market. Did the PC next and got the blanket, but the UD stairs were really far away, so I doubted I'd be able to get back there until I got teleport or invis. Went and got healing early on, and found an altar in VD so I thought I'd try a crowning by getting a ton of food with survival... at day 30, I dumped a ton of food on the altar and got "You feel inner peace". Apparently survival sucks. Okay, no problem. Found a long-dead puppy corpse, then headed to CoC around level 11. Cleared big room, and found that I head 3 stable stoma patches. This should get me pre-crowned fast enough. 150 stoma later, got Far Slayer. Not bad. For a character who with a ton of missile talents already, pretty good. I only had 4 quarrels at the time though, so I'd need to work on that. Picked another ~350 stoma for second precrown for bracers of war. Awesome. During the same period, I also collected ~100 blessed spenseweeds, so I was feeling pretty good. Did the morgia/moss thing a bit too, of course.
Visited dwarftown, killed a goblin rockthrower for the chief, dashed through the animated forest. Came back and got my fireball wand, then did the pyramid. Somewhere along the line I picked up a couple potions of invisibility, or maybe a ring, and my first pair of 7lbs, I don't remember, so I headed back to the puppy cave to descend the UD. On UD 6 a random mob dropped a steel amulet. On UD 8 I basically won the game. I found a friendly potion shop on UD 8, and was able to pacify the floor with green worms. I then elected to increase the level of scumminess of the game substantially, and cleared out the shop a bunch of times. I think I was sitting on ~40 holy water, ~40 booze, ~15 PoEH, as well as 2-3 PoCC and 2-3 PoGA from the store, and having alchemy, I could make a bunch of other useful potions. With merchant discount and a bit of haggling, I could get a PoGA for like 500 gold. I was actually making money emptying the shop, because I was generating Si's faster than I was buying potions. Anyway, I finished up business at dwarftown, saved Khelly, cleared the griffyard. Once done, I took stock of my gear. I had a good bow and ~20 slaying arrows (not quarrels, unfortunately). A wand of cold with effectively unlimited charges. 7lbs. Fire resistance and a blanket. Plenty of healing. PoCCs to spare. Lots of pots of blindness (from the potion store + alchemy) Ring of invisibility. At level 21, I was ready for the ToEF--in fact, I breezed through it. Blasted what I needed with the wand of cold, ignored what I didn't want to kill. I lured the ACW away from his friends, blinded him, peppered him full of slaying arrows, then smashed a PoCC in his face when I ran out. Advanced to level 23 and escaped with the fire orb.
After the tower, I restocked a bit on booze, since I had used most of it in the ToEF, and picked up the RoTHK. Went down to the casino, nothing good there except another pair or two of 7lbs. Found a bookstore on D32 before heading back up. After my latest restock + casino, I had 8 potions of exchange, and I noticed I was carrying around 7 rings of stun resistance. So I headed into the VDD and did some dipping. Junk. Junk. 7 wishes. Well then. My plan to that point was to do a regular game, but with 7 wishes at my disposal, the jump to an ultra would be unbelievably easy. I ditched some useless artifacts at the ratling. While I was hunting for my boar, I noticed day 90 was coming up, so I headed over to the stone circle and killed Keriax, advancing to level 26. Found a boar skull, wished for a scroll of danger, and got chaos artifact #2. Used a whip of slaughtering to get back to L+, then dumped a bunch of casino money on an atlar and got crowned with =Acid and Boots of Divine Messenger. Not as good as my [+6,+2] 7lbs for most purposes, but handy to have when I needed them. Once that was done, I wished for concentration, then 2 AKW to advance myself to level 48. Another wish ended up getting wasted trying to increase my speed, and I wished for a ring of elemental mastery (since I had no other elemental protection). I had 7 (and 1 wish left) brass rings lying around, and 5 pots of exchange kicking around, so I tried dipping again. First dip = 7 more wishes. Most of these I didn't use until the end of the game. I think I wished for a GoGS at some point, and used a few on pots of strength which I could turn into 2 PoGA. There wasn't anything else I really needed. I guess I could have wished for a bunch of scrolls of education and a writing set, in hopes of getting myself alertness or something. Anyway, now level 48, armed to the teeth and having wishes to spare, I worked my way through the CoC. Picked up Serpent's Bite in a giant vault. I think I had found Wyrmlance in the Darkforge treasury earlier. Air and earth temple were uneventful. In the mana temple I started trying offensive alchemy. I had >48 willpower with the water orb and Nonnak, so I was able to make pretty impressive alchemy bombs. I had plenty of junk potions and herbs to use up, and it was surprisingly effective at clearing my way through. I think I managed to kill everything there except the chaos archmage with alchemy, and he himself was dropped with humanoid arrows.
On D42 or so, I had passed a greater undead vault. Normally, I don't touch the things, especially one like this, which had 10 emperor liches. But my success at the mana temple had made me bold. I also had 8 blessed potions of boost willpower, and I knew the ring of immunity was inside. So I buffed my willpower to 99, and proceeded to alchemy bomb the undead vault. I could have killed most of the liches from the far side of a wall, but I let them out so I could see what I was doing a bit better. I used ball lightning now and then to spice things up if they summoned some fire elementals or something. Got ring of immunity and nature's companion. Did the dragon quest, then killed the AKW to boost my score. Did Filk and the Assasin guild. Worked my way through the scintillating cave, ignoring a huge group (25+) of greater titans. Killed EM with phase dagger, go ToRR. Cleared corruption with unicorn. Got Preserver from pot of uselessness. On D50, I wished for speed with my remaning wishes, teleported to the portal, and killed AR without taking a point of damage.
Better to be lucky than good, I guess.
