Gah, first time I manage to get a character to the CoC without making a stupid mistake (ok that's not true, I ate a Kobold corpse because I thought they poisoned rather than sickened, and i was Poison immune..) and I get overconfident and run into what I think (based on the Artifact log) must've been an Artifact Guardian?

Nope, the PoC is an artifact generated in the Gremlin Cave, far to the south west of the map.

Ogre lord at D:9... Can happen. You were pretty overconfident - 13 PV is pretty okay at this stage, but against hard-hitting opponents you need to be wary about berserking unless your PV is "ludicrous" instead of merely "pretty okay". 4 DV against a hard-hitting monster with several attacks is asking for trouble. But I'm one to talk - I learned that lesson the hard way myself often enough ;)

Once you feel the early game's going rather easy switch away from trolls for a change of pace. At least I feel the slow trollish leveling is just a major killjoy since it tages ages to get anywhere, and killed joy will lead to careless deaths such as this.

Nice, you got a giant slug corpse. =P

Well, now you know that ogre lords are too dangerous to face on your first trip to CoC. :) Which helps, as you were fast enough to outrun him. Probably he was generated because you were cursed from the torc... or that could also be a mixed vault ahead of you. I would actually stick with trollish healers - one thing that would've helped you is that healers can use their stethoscopes without consuming a turn. That would've told you how buff this guy is.

Ah, right, I did drop in there while I was trying to find the CoC, and I got spammed with the 'shiver' messages so I jumped straight back out.

Once you feel the early game's going rather easy switch away from trolls for a change of pace.

I don't always play trolls, I tend to decide based on the star sign - Troll Healers on the Candle sign for an easy game, if I get it, so I can practice a bit.

I actually got three, from near Keethrax =x

And yeah, I won't be equipping the stupid Torc again, and I always forget about the stethoscope..

If you've got Candle you need not be either troll or healer :)

Drakeling healers are better than trollish healers in my opinion, but then I'm rather fond of drakelings in general...

Seems you had some hard luck - even an ogre lord wouldn't normally be able to take down a tough troll like that. Still, I'd recommend in future keeping away from the two-handed weapons. You had a very nice shield in your pack, and trained a bit more it could have made you untouchable. Of course it also relies on finding a decent one-handed weapon, but I find they're not all that rare...

Aw, dammit! Won't bother making a new thread for this, but this character looked so promising...

His achievements during his adventures:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nums, the drakish mindcrafter, was killed by a large gnoll.
He scored 18263 points and advanced to level 8.
He survived for 0 years, 3 days, 20 hours, 31 minutes and 44 seconds (3822
turns).
Nums visited 16 places.
He ended his adventuring life on level 6 of a dangerous cave at the Drakalor
Pass.
153 monsters perished under his attacks.
He possessed the following intrinsics:
He was poison resistant.
He was able to teleport.
He was able to control teleportation.
He was resistant to death rays.
He was able to see invisible things.
[all but the poison resistance (and tele control obviously) were from a single pool. imagine my joy at tptitis]
He had the following talents: Good Shot, Quick, Very Quick.

The following monsters were vanquished:
[no cats, because it was so easy to confuse & run from them!]

I had such a nice spear, tptitis + teleport control, was getting some nice gems from the proliferation of ants digging around the puppy cave, was having a generally easy time against anything (even Giant Ant Warriors, once I hit level 8). Figured I'd be fine against these gnolls and hyenas since I confused them all in a row, and then boom, large knoll kills me. I guess I let my hp get too low fighting ants on the level above - didn't have much time to train Healing up yet, either. The crystal of health wasnt identified :(

I`d advise you to play candle-born drakish fighter or something like this - with shield and polearm they are very hard to kill.

Conundrum
04-23-2009, 08:16 AM
Well, I actually did quite well with a randomly generated Drakeling Merchant (specialty potions). Got to level 8 of CoC (after almost starving to death in the Big Room because of all the damn Wererats), but was travelling very slowly due to my lack of damage. Then I got killed by a Clay Golem. Couldn't run away because he slowed me :(

Silfir
04-23-2009, 08:46 AM
... Why is it that I see you in berserk mode two deaths in a row? Coincidence?

Really, don't berserk in melee unless you have to get through high PV. If you pay attention to your hitpoints, you usually get to retreat easily enough not to die, but being berserk lets the others hit you more often in one round. And you weren't even full HP! No wonder that you died, really. Sorry :(

Hunting around for the tension room (you always know soon enough that they're there) wasn't the best idea around with not full HP. You've GOT Healing, after all, and you're in no hurry!

Learn to fear large gnolls. With a drakeling in general it's always just safer to kill these and other tough nuts with acid spit.

Clay golem... Ouch. Acid spit might have worked?

Conundrum
04-23-2009, 09:31 AM
Nup, Clay Golems are immune to acid. I did think of that :P

And yeah, generally in the past I've been impatient with killing things slowly -

You hit and wound
You hit and wound
You hit and wound.. blah blah.

So i've hit Berserk mode, or often gone for the You Lust For Blood thing which was probably an even worse idea. To be honest I'm not sure why I had the Mindcrafter in berserk. And I don't think I used acid spit a single time with the Mindcrafter - probably forgot what Race he was.

The Merchant would've died far far earlier if I'd played him the same way. I think I'm getting better. He was rarely in Berserk, I used acid spit (although that almost killed me in the big room - I hate wererats), I had a pretty high DV, and I ran away a lot, using ranged weapons to whittle away at their HP or ensuring that there was only one mob in range of me when I attacked them (because I was quite fast).

Conundrum
04-24-2009, 07:26 AM
Yay, I've made it to Dwarftown! Candle-born Drakish Fighter :P
Had a bunch of gear cursed by an Annis Hag, luckily not anything too valuable, and destroyed the ones I had equipped with an acid trap :)
Wonder how long before I mess up..

Conundrum

Sorry to keep replying to myself, but wow that was lucky. D:13, I find a beehive, decide to kill it for some beeswax and royal gelee. I handled a beehive on about D:4 with no problem, and I'd got poison resistance since then, so I figured I'd be fine. I wasn't. Poison slowly draining my HP, surrounded by bees, they're killing themselves on me and respawning too fast for me to handle. I finally manage to get to the door, but I'm on 4 hp with a bee behind me and badly poisoned. My only hope? Drink an unID'd potion.

You feel good about your learning level. The giant bee warrior hits you.
You feel poisoned! The giant bee warrior suddenly drops dead! You die... Your
amulet suddenly glows in a silvery light. You have been resurrected! Your
amulet crumbles to dust!

I was wearing my unID'd amulet because my other two were pretty useless. Kinda a stupid way to use an AoLS, but hey, I'm still alive.

EDIT: Scratch that. Next level down, Black Slayer. Faster than me, hitting through 60 DV in coward mode. Prayer makes my God angry at me, which is a stupid story too.
Level 5 of the VD, I found a Neutral altar, and I had a cursed item I really wanted to remove to replace with something good. So I tried saccing some gold and food, but didn't have enough to get my Piety high enough. So I wandered off, and found the Tension room - mostly lizard men with a few wolves. Killed off the wolves and the one unsaccable undead, then lured all the lizard men to the altar and sacced them. Got up to like 5-6k Piety, got the Lucky intrinsic, uncursed my item and went on my merry way.

When I was ready to head over to the CoC, I thought to myself 'I'll go back to that altar and get some more piety. Prayer is helpful.' Got there, sacced the Chaotic monster in the room:

*WELCOME, BELIEVER*
For some seconds the ground rumbles.

I missed the fact that I'd gone up to LN at some point, so I essentially swapped deitys twice and dropped my Piety back to -950 or whatever it resets to. *sigh*

Guess I'll go start again.

EDIT again. Apparently I was on the 'first level of some strange dwarven caves' - the Dwarven Halls I guess. I was planning to go through the Animated Forest, but I thought the path didn't split until D:15. Must've missed the other staircase in my rush to get away from the Bees.
