first win all by myself - gnome healer

(i won once in a shared game with a friend many years ago. this is the first time i won by myself.)

I got intrinsic invisibility early on -- too early to finish thrundarr's quests. also got a wish very early on (same pool that gave me invisibility and see invisible) so i could save Kelevaster. I rolled this character randomly and was a bit worried my gnomish healer wouldn't survive long since they're a bit weak early on, but he surprised me.

i also got quite a few artifacts this game. crowning gift was robes of resistance. it took me a long time to get crowned, i was at "very close" until i hit level 19 or so. wyrmlance was the only one i didn't pick up though i remember staring at an unidentified halberd for a while before deciding it was just a regular halberd :/

something that really helped towards the end was 2 greater vaults, one with giants and the next with red dragons. I gained 10 levels from the red dragon greater vault, got executor, and on the very next level there was a red dragon normal vault, where i got the crossbow far slayer.

i had poison hands for the entire game. it was my very first corruption, and i got it early on from an out of depth chaos monster, long before i had any means of reversing it (although i did have thick gauntlets already, thankfully). by the time i got some chaos resistance scrolls, i had too many corruptions to get rid of poison hands, so i was stuck with it.

this is also the first game where i was able to visit the quickling tree, which i did because i wanted to see what it was like. it was pretty cool, though i went there after closing the gate (i would've gotten over the 90 day limit if i'd tried to do so before hand).

soaker was my d49 gift. i had 4 potions of uselessness and used all of them, but only one artifact of course.

also, first ever game where i met the cat lord and he wasn't hostile. i also typoed into a cat before.

Apish corruption is pretty awesome anyway, IMHO. Learning isn't very important stat in the late game--loss of Wi is probably more of a problem.

I think cursing might cost you ~1000 points on your score. For winners, your score is pretty much swamped by experience, piety, turncount (<80000 only), corruption (maybe), and type of winner (ultras get ~4x less points than regular winners).

apish wasn't so bad. i was playing as a melee character anyway and i didn't find very many books. learning < 5 kinda sucks for wands, but i wasn't relying too much on them anyway, and i have a good enough memory that i could mostly remember how many charges my wands had regardless.

maybe i should've kept executor equipped then, if it was only a matter of 1000 points -- though the wilderness encounters were getting kind of annoying, so i unequipped it as soon as i got bored of them.

it's a good job i was playing on the us server (ancardius.ath.cx), even though ancardia is closer to me in hungary. my first win wouldn't have even got me on the high scores on the finnish server. i suppose that's due to my enormous turn count, but for a first win, i suppose it's not surprising that i wasted a lot of turns.


when trying for my first win, over the years, i have played lots of troll healers born in the month of the candle, lots of grey elven wizards, lots of high elven archers, lots of drakish beastfighters (got one of those pretty far once, had a few orbs even). and, no dice. i just might hold the record for the number of low level candle troll healers killed due to incompetence. :D when i get bored of trying to win (and losing badly), i just random roll everything and this gnomish healer was one such random roll. i started the game knowing i would not live to see level 3, because i was a delicate weakling who couldn't fight her way out of a paper bag. nonetheless, the high regeneration of healers was a boon in the early game, and perhaps the knowledge that i was a gnome, not a troll, kept me a little more careful.
