View Full Version : YAVP: GE Wizard (Plutonium Man / Archmage)

Should be renamed 'too-much-free-time man'. Plutonium Man is killing at least one of everything in the game, which is one of the few good reasons for having a wish engine IMO. The pre-archmage game was very straightforward, as wizards are easy. Precrowned with the emerald dagger and used that for most of the game. Found several scrolls of danger and used them while kick-robbing the HMV. Satisfied the ratling and gave the crone a boar skull, slaughtered DT, then turned lawful.

Read Wish in the assassin's guild to get around teleportitis. At this point, it was close to silvernight, so I went to a room with decreased mana costs and chilled there. Spent the first handful of wishes on speed to make sure silvernight lasted and kept using the mana orb/SoCR. As a backup (I'm too lazy to wish for 98 PoGA every time I wish), I wished for some PoEx and made a wish engine. After that, I wished for AKWs until I got a corpse, put the mana orb in D:48 and ate the corpse, did D:50, used all 20 of my wishes for speed and laughed Andor to death. =P

His further life:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

After slaying Andor Drakon and dispersing his malevolent energies the
pillars of Order appear before you. All the forces of Order seem to be
united behind them. You are lifted to the status of an Avatar of Order and
the tales of your deeds are spread all over Ancardia.

Your deeds are recounted at camp fires and interpreted by philosophers and
priests alike. The common man looks up to you and you slowly start to be
revered as a minor power of Order. After a few millennia have passed you are
raised to the position of a demi-god to guard and protect Ancardia from the
forces of Chaos and Balance forever.

Under your guidance Ancardia becomes an orderly and organized world without
striking changes. Peaceful order (and boredom?) spreads and the world enters
an era of peace and tranquility never again leaving it.

Hmm-hmm...I was passing through and realized, I have no idea what an Archmage game is. Can anyone elaborate?

JellySlayer

Archmage is generally considered to be a mage with enough PP to cast Wish at 1 Mana (wish drains 10 points of random stat), although in principle, it could be quite a bit higher with appropriate gear (ToRR + Mana orb for example). The traditional method to do this involved using the mana battery corruption to build up your PP, and finding a suitable location to reduce your casting costs, giving you effectively unlimited wishes, albeit limited to that location and time unless you're willing to build up an absolutely astounding amount of PP. As mike alludes to, you also have nasty overhead of needing to use a ton of your wishes on building your stats back up.

Ah, okay. Sounds like fun if you have a lot of free time, which I seem to have heaps of this summer...

I thought there was a cap on decreased mana costs at 50%? Since a wizard starts at 40% by that point, how does Silvernight + a room help?

I had an ULE where I thought about this but I couldn't even normally cast wish with my PP, much less bookcast it.

mike
06-04-2009, 04:05 AM
I can't remember the exact cost (I rarely make archmages), but I think the cap doesn't matter for silvernight. In any case, I was getting some benefit. Mana battery doesn't actually help a whole lot, though. At most you can get a couple hundred more pp within a reasonable timeframe. The real trick, IMO, is to collect enough boost potions to keep To/Wi high enough to do most of the early casting from hp. The mana orb will essentially maintain your mana stat and gives +10 (?) pp per use, so eventually you can cast without using hp. It's tedious, but if you plan for it it's pretty much a guaranteed wish engine.

Wow... I am doing something wrong to be using 160k turns for a normal victory when an archmage can be done in 128k.
