View Full Version : Illiterate ULE (drakish beastfighter)

I didn't think about doing any special challenge with this character at start, but later it turned out that I could try if I can win a game with completely illiterate character (at the point where I got a quest to kill a green blob from Thrundarr).
Some time later when I met Khelavaster, I had an unidentified steel amulet that I gave to him to see if it was an amulet of life saving in this game, and it was. At that point I started to think about an ultra ending and I chose to try lawful ending because an illiterate character will be unable to use SoCR and all other endings require the character to be extremely corrupted to enter the gate.

I found a neutral altar in UD and got 2 precrownings with herb farming and live sacs and got Serpent's bite and scorched spear, both being completely useless for a beastfighter. Got invisibility from an invisible stalker corpse while collecting those herbs.
After getting those precrownings, at level 14 or so, I headed to dwarftown and pyramid but decided to skip pyramid entirely because I had no match against the living wall in the top level (being a low-level beastfighter and no slaying ammunition).
Next I saved Khelly, cleared both graveyards and attempted ToEF with only one fireproof blanket but the blanket burnt away quite fast and I had to leave it later. I searched for another blanket and/or ring of ice quite long from graves, deep in ID and tomb of the high kings but got none. Finally I decided to go drink from some pools hoping for a wish... And got one, with the first sip, which was used for rings of ice.
As a drakeling ToEF were quite trivial with some spenseweed for healing. ToTHK and water temple weren't problems either.
Around level 25 it was time to go to casino and search it in a hope of some useful items/artifacts but RNG didn't like me, there were 2 artifacts: thunderstroke and soaker. Again both being useless for a beastfighter.
With all those useless artifacts it wasn't hard to feed the demented ratling. First 4 Gaab Baay's quests were really fast to do but the fifth one, finding a scroll of danger, took really long time. I tried to dig all graves, use pickpockets like mad, loot every shop, visit level 50 in ID and dip other scrolls into potions of raw chaos with no results. After a while I went again for pool sipping and got no wishes from pools in CoC, Darkforge or UD. And last I went to drink a pool in puppy cave, just to notice there were a scroll shop in first level! On a third restock, I finally got a scroll of danger and could get the medal of chaos, convert to lawful and get a crowning. Converting from C to L+ didn't even take too long at level 27 with a whip of slaugtering.
For the rest of the game, there's not much to say. Greater vault with fire creatures in D:45 (where I got first randomly generated non-melee weapon artifact, the whirlwind). Did rest of the temples and killed Srraxxarrakex and just before final dive asked Yrruir to clean all corruptions.

Only 3 potions of cure corruption were needed during the game, 1 before gate (to remove stiffened muscles) and 2 at chaos plane (stiffened muscles and mana battery).

Very nice! Is this the same one that crashed on the server before? Good to see you were able to recover it.

I have to wonder, how the hell did you deal with equipment identification all game? Weapons you probably didn't care about, and armour I'm sure you might've been scared to experiment with, but the likes of potions must have been a nightmare to manage.

Also, what are those O's on the chaos plane? Did a balor summon some ogres or something?

Yes it is. It pulled me back for about one hour.

Headgear: detect status on altar and wear.
Armor: detect status on altar and wear if it's at least potentially useful (average stats better than on current armor). The only real risk is finding a trapped armor which is really unlikely to happen.
Gauntlets: detect status on altar and wear all except those that has unidentified appearance of "gauntlets" (those may be gauntlets of peace, rest has no risk).
Cloaks: detect status on altar and wear.
Girdles: detect status on altar and wear, weight.
Boots: detect status on altar and wear, weight/appearance.
Necklaces: detect status on altar and wear (identifies only a few amulets), weight/appearance. Rest can be identified by shop dentify*.
Bracers: detect status on altar and wear, weight/appearance/function.
Weapons: detect status on altar and wield. Pick-axes, one hammer and whips are the only interesting weapons though.
Missile weapons: shoot.
Missiles: shoot.
Rings: appearance/function, shop identify*.
Wands: zap, weight/appearance, shop identify*. Wand of teleportation can be found in assassins' guild.
Potions: appearance, shop identify*.
Scrolls: not really need to identify these :P. Scroll of danger can be identified by giving scrolls to Gaab Baay when needed. She does drop all scrolls except danger.
Books: well...
Gems: shop identify*. Though these aren't too interesting either.

*Items dropped in shops will be identified eventually (except in casino). I'm not sure when this happens, but I think it's when shopkeeper resupplies (or tries to resupply but the shop is too full). Of course this is quite expensive way, but it's really effective.

Also, what are those O's on the chaos plane? Did a balor summon some ogres or something?
Ettins. And it was a balor that summoned those.
