View Full Version : Grubgah, Dwarven Beastfighter turned into a Chaos Wretch

I decided to play ADOM after a long pause. According to my highscore list my previous win was from 2004 (I've been playing since Gamma 14). Thanks to Silfir's Beastfighter guide I decided to try this class for the first time and ended up with the strongest character I've ever had (with some luck). I was lucky enough to have cursed 7LB generated in Lawenilothehl for only 10000 gold pieces. So I decided to start in the Infinite Dungeon to get some money and while I was there managed to find Ring of Ice and AoLS. Ultra Ending, here we come! Basically I had managed to satisfy the ratling and get the first Gaab'Baay quest early so I was crowned before reaching Kelly. Some monster also dropped Girdle of Giant Strength early (probably in the Pyramid). I was really impressed with the way the Beastfighter became stronger as the game progressed, particularly with the speed increase. I was crowned with lightning immunity and Bracers of War. Later I also found a tension room full of Giant Slugs and one of them granted acid immunity.

No artifacts generated in the Casino shop, but just below the shortcut to the surface there was a karmic vault. I was being very careful trying to shoot the dragons (while being invisible), but I was quickly running out of ammo. I decided to try melee and to my surprise it wasn't that bad. By then my fists were doing 1d26+83 damage so even the wyrms went down quickly. While I was shooting at the dragons they kept picking up the treasure and by the time I was done with the vault I had ring of immunity and a couple of artifacts I didn't need (Thunderstroke and Hammer of the Gods). More importantly, when the level was clear I picked up the pile of 678 million gold pieces the dragons left (never mind being able to carry the weight, the backpack must be really big. Or maybe it was digital currency loaned from ECB ). So back to Dwarftown to remove dooming and to train with Garth, each attribute by 85 million gold or so. By this time my base speed was over 200 thanks to a couple of artifacts. I also got about 20 speed from clearing the bug village. Among the karmic dragon loot I also got some Potions of Gain attributes and a wand of wishing with 4 charges (before this I had got one ring of Djinni summoning which I used to get Find Weakness since I already had something like 10 scrolls of Chaos Resistance). And most importantly, the wand of summon monster for Gaab'Baay.

Dragon caves were no problem and I got important level-ups from greater molochs. I still hadn't done mana temple so that was next. The beastfighter switch places ability was really handy here. I killed Nuurag-Vaarn easily on the spot. This is where I almost ended the game though. I stepped on his spot, picked up the corpse and the orb and realised I was standing on the elemental altar. Nobody sacrificed me though, they just kept trying to hit me. I wasn't even invisible because I needed the experience.

CoC: 50 was a breeze and the monsters dropped another wand of wishing and what I think was the fourth pair of 7LB in the game. Now I had 8 wishes. I used two to get more speed and drank stat boosting potions. By this time I already had strength over 90 anyway so it's not like I needed the boost. Got to the Chaos plane and started hitting Andy left and right. When he was critical I did remember to equip the trident and finished him off with some slaying ammo....

and then I turned into a Chaos Wretch. What?? At first I didn't realise what had happened until I checked my inventory...

I was wielding the rune-covered trident . It must have been the first time I was even wielding it in the whole game.

The next time I meet Blup I just might beat him to death with the orange potions (what a brat, he sometimes has quaffed tons of them anyway). Well, I do consider my character to have been really lucky up to that point. Way to go out in style. I do wonder if it's actually possible to get an ultra ending with just the information the game itself provides. There are so many requirements that if I hadn't been reading the guidebook I don't think I would know what to do. Ok, so I died at the end which damaged my final score but I do consider it a victory of sorts... and a cautionary example.

Heh, nice way to go. My first "victory" ended the same (I didn't realise wielding the trident was needed). At least you can say you've had one of the most individual endings in the game. Next up, exploding frog death ;-)

Always believed it ought to be standard ending of ADOM.

At first I was not very happy of this ending but now I can appreciate it for what it is. In a way it's nice to learn things the hard way. From my first win i can remember three things:

1. I savescummed (just as well as it was a buggy version that crashed quite often)
2. I was surprised that just handling the levers once wasn't enough
3. when I left Drakalor Chain the rest of my life was miserable because of all the corruptions.

Strangely I can't even remember my race/class as it was such a long time ago. (Now I just checked it; the first game version I have on my HD has a L50 human wizard killed by a shopkeeper on level 30 on CoC (Casino?) as the highest score. The second version (gamma 15) has a gray elven wizard win file, I didn't want to play that version now long enough to see the highscore file. He had 16 corruptions upon finishing the game. "He always remembers the glorious deeds that took his life away. His sacrifice is remembered in the stories of his people, but not in their hearts. He ends his life in loneliness and isolation.".... I actually find this pretty funny, more interesting than the nice wins :)
