View Full Version : YASD: Don't mess with kobolds - special mention

Just thought I'd share this.

Randomly generated HE weaponsmith chick was rocking the VD all the way. Even found an altar, where I ID'ed that one of my scrolls is of education! Eventually managing to bless it, it gave no new skills (unlike with that one merchant who started with one and got Athletics... no such luck here, fortunately in retrospect). But I got plenty of piety for this point of the game... not enough, perhaps?

I didn't pre-generate the SMC though, so I was facing level 14 orcs and kobolds by the time I decided to take the (for me, almost mandatory - a test of strength, y'know?) UD trek. That wasn't a problem, really. They hurt a bit, but with my elven chain mail, I incurred relatively minor damage. I found a staircase then; and there was a problem. I dashed to the staircase, and a kobold followed me down... not! Why? Because I was spawned in the middle of a river!

A wererat and his guys attacked me, but I killed them and waited until some HP regen'd, and then swam through the 1 square that separated me from dry land. Here came two problems.

There was no further way on from there.
The kobold I almost managed to leave behind just appeared on the staircase.

I don't think one needs to be a genius to imagine what someone like me - good in melee, but has no missile practice at all - can fear from a level 14 kobold blocking the staircase in the middle of that goddamned river. So, let's kill that kobold. Here come the mistakes.

I was confident enough to think that throwing my weapons and maybe my anvil (which I carried just to stash on D:1 later, or so I wanted) could squash the kobold, but the problem was that most of these missed. I even threw my longsword and warhammer at this point. Mistake #1!

Seeing the kobold still wasn't even severely injured, I deduced that the rest of my stuff can surely kill it... no? So after throwing a wererat corpse from the ground, all the while with the kobold shooting at me with impunity, I threw my food (one, anyway, then I saw it cannot do damage), iron ingots, brass knuckles, boots, etc., and my two shortbows. Mistake #2! See where this is going?

After this, a big D'OH factor settled in as I realised I could have shot the kobold with his own arrows with a decent chance. If you read so far, put the number 67 into your post. But I decided to go to step #3, a river-to-land assault. Now I was unarmed though, since I chucked my melee stuff at the bastard too. Heh. So I attacked, but having no Swimming, I took lots of damage each turn (plus some from the kobold every few turns, even a stunning attack once), so I used up all my prayers I got back in the VD. Still, the kobold was only severely injured and by now, probably pretty pissed.

I retreated onto dry land and unequipped my elven chain mail, now on 2 HP, which I threw at the kobold - critically injured! 'Yes', I thought, but with nothing - absolutely nothing - left that I could throw (those poking sticks the kobold kept shooting were pretty useless in this regard), I decided to withdraw and wait for something - another wererat which would net me corpses to throw at the kobold, or even some weapon it would drop with which I could wait for my HP to regen and then attempt to melee again, or throw it at him so I could cause a bleeding wound and so the kobold would die in a few turns...)

"The kobold shoots an arrow at you! You are wounded. You die..." (2->-4 HP. Having the chain mail would have left me with 1.) Funny death, I'd say! It is obvious that I played rather badly in face of fatal danger, but at least I got a good laugh out of it - and I hope you will, too.

You still had cash to throw. Maybe it was a better idea than throwing your armor?

Only merchants can throw coins.

<pedant> Only merchants can throw coins and actually do damage, fairly sure any tom dick or harry with an empty missile weapon slot can throw coins. Almost, but not quite, useless. </pedant>

Oh and awesome death by the way :) I love the fact that you threw 2 bows at him whilst being peppered by his arrows - style points indeed
