Hello everyone,

recently I was thinking about this, and figured it'd be interesting to know what the very first version, PC, etc. you guys have played would be. Mine are the following:

First version played: 1.1.1 winbeta4 back in '06 - I'm definitely a newcomer compared to those who have been playing since the gammas :)

First PC generated: a dark elf necromancer who died to a jackal pack encounter shortly afterwards.

First artifact generated: the bracers of war as a random drop somewhere in the ID, probably after I25. Didn't even know where the CoC were back then.

First corruption attained: "your feet have transformed into hooves", at around the same location. My English wasn't what it is now, so I had to look "hooves" up to picture the body horror!

Please share yours :)

I started playing on 1.0.0 in 2002. I played a whole helluva lot of high elven archers. I think I wanted to be Legolas. The first artifact I can remember was Sun's Messenger. I had been sacrificing everything in hopes of being crowned, but didn't understand how it worked. During my first moloch fight, I prayed to be healed and instead was crowned :). My first corruption was ten extra eyes, pretty much free +6 Pe, so I thought corruption was pretty awesome until I got some nasty ones. Thanks for starting this; it's nice to remember the good times after I just lost a fantastic character to my own stupidity.

My first played version was 0.9.9 g15. I remember that I always played high elven archers, trollish healers and dark elven necromancers, and most often: gnomish elementalists. For a long time I was unable to get past level 12 with any character, then my first gnomish elementalist hit level 15 (but died in the Pyramid). Slowly, I got better and better until I finally won with a dark elven barbarian a few days ago - I think it immediately ended up being an ULE, or maybe an UNE, but definitely an ultra. The first artifact I ever got was the black tome - which also introduced me to the lovely system of corruptions. What corruption I got, I don't remember - how could I? It was so long ago.

Let's try:

First version 1.0.0. Played some gammas later on.

First PC Some sort barbarian, died from starvation in wilderness due to me not figuring out how to enter locations. After reading some manual orc Ranger did better due to survival still never made to anything but wilderness encounter due to same problem.

First artifact: Skullcrusher in Black market - few moments before learning shopkeepers are not pushover problem.

First legit win - orc priest. Did I mentioned I like orcs a lot in general?

First corruption - I think poison hands one. SurprisinglyI kept on for some time, guess mostly due to not knowing what to do with potions.

First thing eaten: kobold [second one rabid dog]. Killed desire to experiment with corpses for some time. Chars at that time was on strict orcs and rations diet. As I said I do like orcs a lot.

After reading Soirana's post, I'm thinking the same of "first thing eaten".

My first legit win was with a dark elf wizard, on December 2011. Very scummed, but I won and that's what matters :p

First adom version was almost certainly gamma 15.

I genned a monk and had never before played any game in which
the mode of attack wasn't invoked by pressing a button, so I
bull-headedly used trial and error to find the attack button.
Fortunately/unfortunately, since I was a monk, I noticed that
the 'k'ick command seemed to work, so spent the next few tens
of thousands of turns kicking my way through Ancardia with
several monks (they died like flies). I was so excited to hit
xl 6 for the first time, now I could circle kick! Sad to say,
my earliest deaths were also caused by not knowing the secret
art of entering locations.

I don't remember first corruption, but I remember the feeling
of horrible unfairness I experienced upon getting the old
barbarian's quest for the first time.

I began playing with ADoM on 0.9.9 gamma 14 back in September of 1999 when i began my sophomore year of university.

I can't remember the specific details of my first artifact/character/corruption, but i do remember the first time I reached the Casino. Having played the original Epyx Rogue on my Tandy 1000 (in full green and black monochrome glory, no less!) on and off since 1985 and not having read up on the genre, I didn't know of the Crawl/(Net)Hack/Angband/Moria/etc that Rogue had spawned. When I reached the casino and saw the colours, I was amazed at the creativity of where Thomas had taken the Rogue idea and I was hooked...

It's been my primary game of choice ever since, 13 years and counting. I don't have a legitimate win yet due to my stubborn desire of having my first win be an ultra victory. Gotta love OCD.

First version: 1.1.1
The other questions, I don't remember that well. My first char was probably a grey elf wizard? First artifact.. was it skullcrusher, in Leggot's shop? I have absolutely no idea about the first corruption.

I remember generating an endless stream of troll mindcrafters in the beginning, for some reason I thought they were awesome. And kept dying early.

First win was a gnome monk, month of the raven and wielding the RCT.

First version: 0.9.9g10. I was just a high school kid at the time when my brother introduced me to the game.

First PC: gnome elementalist. I played them almost exclusively until my first win a few months after I started playing (after being spoiled to the nth degree). My second win (a dwarf weaponsmith who died of corruption to leftover stone grues on the way up after winning) came a long while after, like months after. After that, I didn't win again until g16p2 came along.

First artifact: a certain black tome as a surge of power in the puppy cave. Of course I read it multiple times and died shortly after.

First corruption: can't remember, but it had to do with that book I found!

First death: can't remember, but one of my very first deaths was from eating a kobold in the puppy cave. This was back when sickness just dealt damage... and faster... and a lot of it. That also was when I used to start the game in the puppy cave. Oh, the memories. Oh, the deaths.

First version: 1.0.0 (I think) back in 2001. I was on a freeware games downloading spree at the time. Most of the games I downloaded were fairly forgettable. ADOM wasn't.

First PC: Human Fighter - I think. It took some time to figure out how to enter Terinyo, though. I migrated pretty quickly to high elven archers.

First artifact: Pretty sure it was the si.

First corruption: Poison hands from Moon Sickle.

First death: No idea. Probably starvation.

First version played: 0.8.4 (it was still Ancient Dungeons of Mystery at that time!)
First PC: no idea, probably dwarf paladin because I played that a lot in the beginnings, before switching to gnome elementalist when 0.9 was released
First eveything else: no idea, it was too long ago...

Lost my job in 2002 and asked a friend to dowload a few freeware games, luckily ADOM 0.9.0 I think was one of them. Human Fighter, went straight to Terinyo, as I read the ingame manual before playing and thus knew how to enter locations:p. Got quest to find carpenter and headed SE, which took me to the ID. My 1st artifact was most likely the Golden Gladius from the arena. Don't remember my 1st corruption or death. My 1st win was about 3 years later, playing nothing else than ADOM with a Hurtling Healer.

First version: 1.1.1 winbeta4
Other than that don't remember much, but i loved GE Monks when i started playing ADoM. And i got a lot of games trying to find the puppy and dying instead. Girl said north-east, i went north-west as i already knew there was a dungeon there. Never found puppy there.
I do remember my first major breakthrough though. Usually i died somewhere near lvl15, but then there was this brave gnome assassin, who got crowned with cloak of oman and wielded sword of nonnak. He killed ACW without any invisibility or confusion or the likes of it. Just exchanged hits with ACW. Though i did poison my weapon. Enter Minotaur Maze without any idea about trap pattern and managed to kill Minotaur Emperor.Switched to basic eternium sword in casino. As i was spoiling myself with improved guidebook, i heard about someone giving removing corruptions for doing their quest.I thought it was AKW. Did the quest for him, didn't help. Died of corruption on D:48 due to the fact that i dropped orbs on the rifts, not used them. Sorry for long post.

My 1st artifact was most likely the Golden Gladius from the arena.

Of course! Now I'm pretty sure that was my first artifact too. I remember getting it for the first time and being impressed with it. I should play a gladius wielder some time.

First version played: Can't remember if it was 1.0.0 or 0.9.9, but I started in 2001. Definitely pre-Talent system. Might have been 1.0.0 because I seem to remember accidentally teleporting out of the arena once, but I might be mixing it up with one of the other thousands of YASDs.
First PC generated: A human elementalist that starved to death. I wasn't used to how devastating hunger was in roguelikes, and was completely thrown. Finding out you could eat corpses was what made the game actually possible again, though not exactly winnable. First game actually finished (gnomish elementalist UNE, with shameless pool-scumming until I got a wish-engine started) was this weekend, a decade later. Yeah. I'm currently grooming a L11 dark elven mindcrafter to try for a legitimate victory; UNE or gate depends on whether I can get that AoLS.
First artifact: Definitely the golden gladius.
First corruption: Not entirely sure, but it might have been the horns or eyes.

First version played: 1.0.0. I think it was around 2001, but could have been 2000 or 2002 as well.

First PC generated: An elementalist. Probably elf or gnome, I don't remember which. The first PC I got to the CoC was also an elementalist, as well as the first PC that completed the ToEF. My first win was a drakeling wizard though, and I've yet to win with an elementalist (I'm sure I could do it though).

First artifact generated: It must have been the si. I had to play many games until I was lucky enough to get an early-game item drop, I didn't know anything about crowning, I always took the carpenter quest and not the druid's, I didn't know about the Pyramid yet, and I didn't win the arena until later on. So the si it was.

First corruption attained: I don't remember, but it was probably a bad one because I was scared of corruption like the plague.

Of course! Now I'm pretty sure that was my first artifact too. I remember getting it for the first time and being impressed with it.

Amen to that... I also thought it was awesome the first time I got it. Extra DV, PV, speed, and it was golden! :D

That's exactly how it went for me also: Puppy cave vault -> first artifact(Black tome) -> first corruption(teleportitis). Maybe we should foud a club :)

First version: On of the last gammas. I actually remember that I learned about adom at new years eve 1999, so whatever was current version around then.
First PC: probably some kind of elf.

Thread? RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE!

*coughcough*

First version: 1.1.1 (windows). I was a semi-latecomer to the party. It was back in... 2006-ish? I was one of the first people Gut talked to way back when. :) On the old rec.games.roguelike.adom.

First PC Generated: .... died very quickly, in the ID. I can't remember *exactly* what race/class combination it was, though. But this was back when I thought the ID was where I needed to go for the 'black druid' quest (you don't know *how* many times I went there...)

First Artifact Generated: The first one I can remember, unless you count the Potion Of Literacy, was BoW on a Beastfighter from a crowning. I never found a random one until *after* I was spoiled and *after* my first crowning. My luck: not so great. :)

First Win: A grey elf priest. Basic win. My first win was *almost* an Ultra (the Beastfighter mentioned above), but I couldn't beat the final boss. Yes. I went for an Ultra before I ever went for a basic win. I'm just that kind of player. I learned that you *can't* really be that kind of player. ;)

First Corruption Attained: I *think* it was Teleportitis.

First Wish: Detect Item Status. .... no, really. I know this because it was *ALWAYS* the first thing I wished for if I got a wish from a pool. For a long, long time.

First version: 1.2.0!

First character: Some sort of ranger who got ambushed in the wilderness. Died by trying to use the vi-keys to move, but ended up 'h'andling the trees instead.

First artifact: well, probably the si or something, but I remember my first surge of power was generated with a master mimic guardian next to the stairs, and I died before even getting to see what it was.

First win: A drakish barbarian named Cassava Cake, not long ago!
I played Nethack since I was a little kid so I didn't have to get over the initial learning curve of how to attack enemies, enter locations etc. It just took time getting used to not using vi-keys and that _ means pray, not walk! I got my equipment cursed too many times with that...

First version: 0.9.9 gamma 15, from what I heard it wasn't very stable due to crashes on monsters picking up lots of items, but didn't get far enough for it to be a problem :P

First silliness: Terinyo a tiny helmet? Ok, how do I pick it up? Where's the damn manual...? :P

First time doing VD quest properly: running for my life 3 floors up... WTF just happened? Oh, that makes sense.

First artifact: scorched spear in the puppy cave vault. Which I promptly left behind (yet another spear? do not want) and only upon death I learned from .flg it was something better.

First win: GE Weaponsmith in 1.0.0.

Gotta love those nostalgic posts...
First version: dunno exactly, but definitely before the talent system, back in 1999 or 2000.

First dumb thing: dying for starvation in the wilderness...why reading the manual, i can figure things out by myself!

First character: orcish barbarian, most likely.

First artifact: the black torc from keethrax, which i always use to wear, not having the faintest idea about B/U/C status

First achievement: Probably getting to the left side of the map, but i still remember how astonished i was the first time i entered the water temple and pyramid.

First win: never won yet...never savescummed either, i onlyy read the manual. I was considering giving up and reading the guidebook after all these years, but playing totally unspoiled give me sweet emotions, so i'll stick with that for some more time.

My first character lucky enough to make it into the teens was a dwarven merchant.
Exploring below dwarftown, not even knowing enough to ask about quests, he stumbled across Moon Sickle!
Awesome damage... I remember feeling unstoppable and wondering at my luck.
Then the truth began to dawn as I got one corruption, then another, then another...
I don't remember how that character died, but it wasn't long after that.

First version played: 0.9.9 g15
When: 2000 I think? I was 10 or 11 at the time.
First character: A human barbarian, I'm pretty sure.
First death: By an ogre in the SMC. I didn't understand that the monsters got harder the longer you stayed...
First artifact: The emerald dagger. (which was called "Death's Final Touch" or something like that back then) It was generated in the SMC. :)
First Achievement: Finding the CoC and the arena for the first time. I should explain, I had gone back and played earlier versions of ADOM where it was just one dungeon and been to the arena and Dwarftown and the CoC graveyard. When I realized those locations still existed in g15, I was incredibly excited.
First Win: a couple savescummed. First legit win was with a gnome merchant in 2004.
