View Full Version : YAVP - Jess, the Orcish Bard UCG

Well, after several promising but failed attempts and many hours, the third ultra (and thus the fourth win) has been achieved! Jess, the orcish bard, has started out with an already awesome skillset that expanded into what's probably the best skillset ever during the game, and a pair of 7LBs that survived the entire game and were the only 7LBs she found. She got Healing, then travelled through the SMC and UD with the help of a powerful brown bear (who was soon abandoned). She was precrowned with Soaker, which eventually became ratling fodder. She nearly got trapped in Darkforge as she lost teleport control in the pool room, but thanks to a bundle of 6 arrows of slaying and some 7LB action, she miraculously survived and escaped with an AoLS. That was the biggest near death event in the game, quite probably. The Wyrm went down easily, though only because of luck - that fight was very risky. Jess' only fireproof blanket was destroyed and thus she had to return with only unburnable equipment. Her only option was to melee the Wyrm with an eternium halberd; thankfully, this worked as the Wyrm had been weakened and wounded before with a potion of sickness and some dragon slaying ammo. Still, Jess developed an addiction for the water orb here. (Until the TotRR, Jess never really found a great melee weapon - two swords of sharpness were eventually found, and one of them used.)

A lesser and a greater vault of fire creatures gained Jess many levels in the late midgame, and the Iron Crown of Havlor, Sun's Messenger and Lust for Glory were found in the greater vault, the former two being awesome finds that were used heavily for the rest of the game. Acid Bolt and Farsight, as well as the less used Cure Disease and Knock were learnt at level 18 - the former two helped quite a lot in slaying ancient blue dragons and maneuvering in cavernous levels, respectively. Aside from a few careless maneuvers Jess wasn't in danger again until the very end. She explored the Rift but by the time the 2000 turns passed the librarian was dead, so she had to make do with the spellbooks.

As the endgame neared, Jess was fleshed out pretty well. Keriax fell easily thanks to Sun's Messenger. No issues with Gaab'Baay's items either. Crowning gift ended up being the Staff of the Wanderer. In the end, Yrruir was slaughtered and 8 PoGA were received from Riurry. A few *derp* moments came at the end: the 8 PoGA took 8 potions of holy water to bless, so Jess had an extreme shortage at the end. She also had to bless 2 RoDS': she used one wish for SoCRs and another for speed in Andor Drakon's palace. Jess didn't have enough water to bless the SoCRs, or even the TotRR itself! Still, she was impatient and confident.

Well, you know which forum section we are in, so it paid off in the end. Jess used the Trident and missiles alternatingly. While she was heavily corrupted by the end, Andor Drakon finally died and Jess became the new Ultimate Chaos God! She joins Diego, the DE barbarian ULE, Illo, the drakish healer UNE and Haglar, the orcish ranger gatecloser in the ranks of my winners.

Interesting tidbits:

Alchemy was awesome. Extra healing = invisibility+raw mana. Good enough, eh? But even better: longevity = stomafillia+invisibility. While I didn't need the long life span in the end, it felt good to know that my lifespan was extended by about 8 PoL's worth - that's 32 to 256 extra years, if the IGB is right. The PoGA recipe, unfortunately, required PoCC which I didn't want to pass on, nor did I need to.

I also started out with Fletchery. I used it near the endgame only, and it didn't do much, but using logs, I managed to get 30 to 110 arrows/quarrels with each use. I got some penetrating quarrels, but never found an use for them.

Jess was my first character who actually managed to climb (i.e. not fall) into the Rift.

This was a very fun game altogether.

I always like to think of the demented ratling as an addict. He needs to eat artifacts (or just magic items in general, but artifacts for the best results) or he'll exhibit symptoms of withdrawal (which is also the reason why he looks and acts so demented, I suppose). So he was willing to do anything for a few artifacts...
