View Full Version : My second win :-D Gordoneye closed the gate!

I'm glad it didn't take me another four years to reach my second victory ;-) Just like prime said in my first victory thread, it definitely was alot easier the second time.

So let's see what I can tell you about the glorious quest of Gordoneye, a young dark-elven Archer born under the sign of the Unicorn who sallied to the Drakalor Chain to leave his chaotic past behind, become a champion of order and by the way close the chaos gate and save the world...

Like I said, Gordoneye was tired of his past as an indecend, lawless punk, so he accepted even the most stupid lawful quests. Actually he didn't have to be very afraid to begin with, cause from the very start he had quite a decent armor with him that helped him alot to survive his first adventuring days. So he saved the healer, killed Cranach and even tried his best to rescue the cute dog, though that one was not quite a success. Anyway, at least he found an altar in the puppy cave to change to lawful allignment. Back then a big problem was his constant lack of ammunition, so he was compelled to learn using a sling and stones.

However, Gordoneye continued his journey to the Caverns of Chaos, where he descended to Dwarftown without bigger trouble. Though he had quite some bad luck with the herbs in the big room where he wasn't able to secure any of the important herb patches... in the end he finished the game completely without herb training.

His first dwarven quest was to kill a hill giant which turned out to take quite some time. He searched for one in the big room but only found extreme numbers of his spider-summoning compatriots, thus facing huge spiders of rediculous power in the end. But finally he found his prey and continued the dwarven quests. The next bigger drag was the arena quest, where an insidious RNG wanted him to fight a wild cat. Since Gordoneye didn't have a wand of trap creation or a potion of exchange with him, he teleported out of the arena using a wand of teleportation, vainly explored the whole Caverns down to the animated forest in search for a helpful piece of equipment and finally came back, re-entered the arena and just teleported the cat out of it (which counts as a victory, for those who didn't know). The rest of the dwarven quests turned out to be quite easy.

The pyramide, the dwarven graveyard, the tomb of the high king and darkforge (where Gordoneye found an adamantium broadsword of mayhem and a white dragon scale armor) went quite easy, and afterwards he sacrificed hordes of chaotic monsters in the puppy cave untill his new diety crowned him with shock resistance and the boots of the devine messenger. Ready for the tower he thought... equipped his tower stuff, passed the red glowing gates and after some steps and a short fight with a fire giant turned around and left with burning socks... too little fire resistance, damn... always thought three sources were enough. After some annoying rounds in the ID I opened a thread here on the forum asking for help, so some of you might already be familliar with this episode of Gordoneye's adventures.

For the rest of you and for completion's sake I will summ it up anyway. Our hero decided that he had no chance to save the dying Khelly (all darkforge pools plus two additional pools didn't give him a wish) and that he had to explore the deeper dungeon levels to prepare for the tower. He managed to obtain the water orb in the water temple without bigger trouble, cleared some vaults in the following levels, killed the undead of the graveyard and even reached the Banshee. At the Banshee's level Gordoneye was painfully reminded never to let his guard down. While trying to empty a tension room of ancient Minotaurs, he accidentaly took a step out of the corridor's safety and suddenly got hit by three foes at once... down below 20 HP... luckily his new diety came to his aid and he survived this obstacle. Back at the surface he had gained two more levels and also brought some nice cursed potions of invisibility and a very nice eternium tower shield with him. To get his fire resistance complete, he equipped the axe of a sudden mysterious dwarven hero (that was in his possession for quite some time... he just didn't remember that it grants fire resistance).

So he entered the tower again with big confidence... that didn't last very long. Before he even found the stairs to the second level, two blessed fireproof blankets and one uncursed one were destroyed and Gordoneye's wonderful equipment started to melt away like butter in the sun. It turend out that he had been cursed sometimes during his adventures without recognizing.
Well, then the hard way! He stored all his vulnerable equipment at a save place and ran through the tower at maximum speed. Afterwards he went to get his useful stuff in hopes that enough of it would survive untill he found the Wyrm. Luckily the last charge of the last remaining wand of digging brought him to the Wyrms residence, but less luckily none of his potions survived long enough to help Gordoneye in the final fight. Least luckily all his bows were burnt at that time, but luckily he still had some crossbows with him. And very very luckily the Wyrm had a really bad day... most of the time he just stood in the back and vainly tried to confuse our hero who constantly pierced him with higher metal quarrels. Easy win, didn't have to heal even once.

So take the fire orb and continue further down into the dungeon! On the way Gordoneye found an eternium two-handed sword of devestation and in the casino he gambled successfully and bough a black dragon scale mail, a pair of seven league boots and a phase dagger among others (those who read my first victory post know that I love phase daggers ;-)). The cat lord gave him a very nice ring to complete his equipment.

Between the air and earth temple our hero got in grave danger for the second time. He came across a greater undead vault and since Gordoneye was quite powerful and I thought he could kill more or less everything, he decided to empty that vault! Well, lesson learned... an hour later circa 600 arrows and quarrels were lying inside the vault, Gordoneye still stood in the entrance hallway, had already killed four emperor lichs, three doppelganger kings (one of them punshed him down to 1 HP) and hundrets of less mighty foes and read a scroll of monster detection to check how far he had already progressed... and well, the scroll revealed 8 more emperor lichs, 13 lich kings and a completely monster-filled vault... damn! But a real hero knows when to fight and when to retreat, so he closed that unholy place with a summoned door, locked the door and... no, he didn't run in panic! He left in a relaxed an cool way, as to be expected from a true hero ;-)
One level below the earth tempel he came across yet another greater undead vault... but as I said, lesson learned.

Both Gordoneye and myself were really glad to see that the mana tempel is much easier to do with good preparation. Torches? Check! Deathray resistance? Check! Confusion Resistance? Check! Trap detection? Check! So the hardest part of my last victorious game almost became a marching-through. Nice!

I'm afraid I have to disappoint those of you who hope for an exciting final. D50 was definitely not harder than the mana temple... rather easier. I was a little afraid that chaos might become an issue because I only had one potion, one uncursed scroll (no more holy water) and one ring of djinni summoning to deal with it and I entered with six corruptions. Finally I didn't use any of them. Actually Gordoneye only used a single potion of cure corruption during his whole adventure to get rid of an early mana battery. What a difference if you can kill all those corrupting monsters from a distance! The balors were cannon fodder. Actually there was only one of them who even managed to get into melee range (although I saved my slaying ammo for their boss). Of course Gordoneye just retreated for two steps and finished him of. Also Fisty had no chance at all. Humanoid and demon slaying arrows killed him in an instant.

Well, Gordoneye did the unicorn quest to get rid of his corruptions and left the Drakalor Chain refined and happy at level 49. He managed to achieve 10044404 points.

There are two questions that I still have. It turned out that affinity with bows, crossbows and scugari was not enough to get the missile weapon master talent. I couldn't chose it untill I had also got affinitiy with slings. Anyone got a clue why?
Also I recognized that I only got crappy or mediocre ammunition with fletchery. Could it be because I crafted the ammunition at the surface where the danger level is too low? Or was it just bad luck?

For the fletchery, it's very important that your materials be blessed. Also, you should be level 18+ and have Fletchery above 80 (preferably at 100). And use logs, not sticks. Also, slaying ammo is random.

For Missile Weapon Master, the requirements are, 3 missile weapon affinities, Alert, and Keen Shot; and Affinity with Boomerangs and Scurgari counts, so .. I don't know.

I had three affinities for 9 levels without being able to chose missile weapon master. After I finally got the fourth affinity I could take it. Strange.

Only bows, crossbows and slings count due to a bug.
