I started with carpenter quest, C altar on VD: 6. Thought about being C, sacrificed Yriggs. Eventually decided to become N=. Healed a monster but never went back and got the Healing skill. Herbalism served healing needs very well. I had 2 squares in the Big Room with moss of mareilon and spenseweed, got herbs each time I passed. Dwarftown on D:11. Killed a hell hound, crossed animated forest, retrieved Moon Sickle, then portal quest. Poured holy water on the grave and slew Nonnak in melee. Did pyramid, returned with Ancient Mummy Wrapping, kill ogre tribe. Became arena champion, traded gladius. Sacced greater demon for final quest, got Big Punch. Sacced Big Punch, Moon Sickle, Sword of Nonnak, then prayed. I was crowned champion of the One Who Kills, gifted with Death's Blade, and blessed with shock immunity.

I killed Khelevaster. Dove to water temple. Grues and demons were easy with blessed Death's Blade. Killed Snake from Beyond in melee, claimed orb. Dove ID, first item was fireproof blanket. Found one more, several waters, and a potion of gain attributes, left ID before luck ran out. Put together "Tower gear" at top level of CoC, where there happened to be an altar. Equipped blessed ring of ice. Found the top of the Tower fairly quickly, dug into temple with wand. Had very bad luck with blessed arrows of demon slaying. Should have trained bows better. I used two potions of confusion to kill the Wyrm in melee. Claimed fire orb and got out. Claimed ring of High Kings while I was above ground.

Air temple was quick and uneventful, wore crystal scale [0, +8] and managed very well. Did not use missiles. Claimed air orb. After passing the Casino and finding the Darkforge shortcut, I decided to seek vengeance for Mudura, my last orc barbarian, who was killed by a berserking minotaur emperor. I picked up an eternium two-handed sword in Darkforge and took it with. Before the maze I stashed valuables in the caves of the High Kings, and fell down the rift to claim the weird tome (it's much simpler than spending ~30 level advances getting a barb's literacy to 100). A friend has been asking me to read the weird tome while drunk, and I keep forgetting. Has anyone tried?

Anyway, I dove into the minotaur maze with full confidence. I'd stashed my most valuable gear and prepared well, or so I thought. My emergency scroll of chaos resistance came in handy when I gained mana battery. I needed wands of stunning for minotaur mages, so I couldn't afford that corruption. I wore black dragon scale mail to prevent acid damage from traps. I seriously think I explored all 20 possible levels of the maze. I ran out of food and resorted to eating minotaur corpses, realizing too late this had trashed my Willpower. Switched to scrolled-up elven chain [+7, +5] for improved DV vs. minotaur emperor. Had to drain a wand of stunning, but I managed to stun the four mages and even the emperor(!) and then chopped them all up with my eternium two-hander (sorry, One Who Kills, but it had better to-hit). My Willpower was already cooked, so I ate the emperor's corpse for the St/To boost.

I found the axe of the minotaur emperor to be much more powerful than I had thought. +Crit and -Conf came in very handy in three lesser vaults of dragons in the lower CoC (blue on D:26, red on D:29, and red on D:47 I think). I didn't bother to completely clear the lowest vault, but a certain blue dragon dropped Nature's Companion after I offered [p]eace, then backstabbed him, which I think might have given slightly more experience, but no matter. I wore it for most of the endgame. Earth temple was hard. I eventually started climbing the stairs, killing 3 or 4 monsters, then going back down to the temple for more. Killed Ancient Stone Beast in melee, claimed earth orb. Didn't bother with blue dragon caves. Ring shop in the unreal cave system had two rings of slaying and one of SeeI. Mana Temple was pretty typical, except I killed Nuurag-Vaarn in melee. He drained Strength once, Willpower once, and then Charisma on the turn before I slew him. Grabbed Mana Orb and ascended to an altar outside the D:29 dragon vault. Blessed water, drank useful potions, blessed gear, etc. Dove to D:48 and amended the anomolies. Used a wish I had been carrying around for a girdle of giant strength, which perfectly repaired the hole in my strength left by the Fire Orb. Uselessness gift was pure uselessness: the black tome. Corruption got out of control in the final fight. I flipped both levers and teleported to the stairs, but Fistinarius reopened the gate. I had to fight him in melee, although I now realize I could have used the rune-covered trident to buff my few demon-slaying missiles a bit. The image of a water elemental popping up on D:50 with a message and gift is just comical to me. Prayed twice for healing before he fell. 71% of my soul belonged to the forces of Chaos when I left the bottom level. I did the unicorn quest to finish free of corruption.

Well done. Many have tried to read the Weird Tome. If you suck at reading (barbarian) it doesn't do a whole lot. If you are a high level wizard you will be confused for a very long time. Don't do it. It's like a super IBM Guild Manuel. You certainly had some nice weapons generated this game (Barbarians always do). Something to remember: You never have to fight Fisty in melee. He's tough. With your Blessed 7LB you could do a hack and back strategy.

Very well done. And in just 66 days too. That's pretty fast considering all the sidequest stuff you did. High kings, Minotaur maze, gremlin cave, rift/library. I often skip all of those and end up close to the 90 day mark. And you saved the puppy!

I had forgotten about the puppy. To clarify, my friends does not ask me while drunk, and I do not play ADOM drunk; the idea is to acquire the weird tome, get the PC drunk at the Green Griffon Inn, and then attempt to read the book. I suppose the connection between the mad minstrel and the village fool may be that the book can only be read by half-mad drunks.
