sorrow

Finally, after about 13 years of playing (not sure, but I think g16p2 was the first one), I managed to complete the quest and close the gate with Gupik, a gray elven wizard.
Story:
If I recall correctly, Gupik started with Frost Bolt (for sure) and Slow Monster (or was it Calm Monster?). The game started as usual with a visit to Terinyo and Bandits, where first kill (outlaw) was made. Then, a jump to the Puppy Cave - unfortunately, the Puppy died due to being generated between two hostile monsters. The carpenter was saved a moment later (I tend to ignore the druid quest) - and during that visit Gupik's repertoire of spells was extended with Darkness and Magic Missile. Then he explored the ID for a while to get more spells. Feeling well prepared he traversed through the Small Cave all the way through the Unremarkable Dungeon and the High Mountain Village.
Then he rushed to the Dwarftown without stopping anywhere to obtain two quests from the Old Dwarf. Gupik was asked to slay a skeleton and free a spirit of some dead dwarf. Well, nothing easier than that, or so it seemed. The battle with Griff was very, very tough and Gupik had to teleport himself away a few times - as he lacked healing potions.
While bashing his way to the Master Necromancer he received an invitation from Rehetep and chosen to visit him on his way out. Having learnt Fireball he knew this has to be an easy task - and it was. He wanted also to visit the Darkforge, but a tension room full of gorgons made him change his mind. As a reward for the quests, Old Dwarf identified Gupik's equipment. And there it was - a wand of wishing, with 5 charges.
Following the advice from the Ancient Wise Men (http://www.adom.de/forums/showthread.php/12009-newbie-WoW-found-quite-early-suggestions) he wished for famous boots, an amulet for the dying sage, some decent shields and spellbooks of Acid Ball. Then, he decided to go on with the Dwarf's quests, where he found amulet of teleport control. He raided Darkforge to find - to his disappointment - no good armours and tons of useless weapons. Gupik also visited the Tomb of High Kings, before resting in Dwarftown to enhance his knowledge.
A visit to the Water Temple, followed by a proper visit to the Darkforge (to get the Crown of Science), prepared him for the Tower. He left most of his precious stuff in CoC, as he had only one fireproof blanket and no rings of ice. Amazingly, the Ancient Chaos Wyrm just stood at the end of a very long corridor and decided to exchange bolt spells with Gupik. After retrieving the Orb he ventured into the Caverns only to discover he had left the Water Orb in the Dwarftown... At least he got crowned on the way back.
On his second attempt everything went smooth. He found tons of spellbooks in the Casino, received a ring from the Master Cat and even managed to clear golem vault. The Air Temple was cleaned with Magic Missile, whereas the Earth Temple - with Acid Ball and willpower at 48 (Orb + Nonnak + amulet +6).
He found a greater undead vault at around D:45, which he skipped, and a ring store in D:46 (I wonder, how many customers does this a shop there have, in a millennium? three?). A battle in the Mana Temple was long and tough - it took many castings of Magic Missile to lure N-V to the corridor before blasting him away with Acid Ball.
D:50 was just bashing things away with Magic Missile - no history there, though on his way out, to keep himself warm in D:49 Gupik drank a few potions of booze. Then he saved a white unicorn to get rid of all the corruptions, before going home. Fin.
Things I have learnt during this game:
- a real tiny girl at home does increase the number of saves you make ;)
- save backups do help with power outages (which is why I do not have the achievement of finding Blup's mum)
- 6 wishes is more than enough
- in 1.2.0p3 closing the gate and teleporting away to the stairs does not work, as the gate is immediately reopened
However, the most important thing is that I now really think that the wishes were not *that* needed and I could have achieved victory without them. Which I plan to do next ;)
