I started ADOM pretty recently (~1 month ago?), but I am a retired(haha) Dungeon Crawl expert(~35 wins).

Rough recap of game from memory:

Started with Firebolt/Darkness and !Invis which I used to rob the black market for Frost Bolt and Magic Missile books from the black market. Killed a few criminals in Holeinthewall. Got the puppy/kranach quests, but held off on choosing between druid/healer.

Went to ID where I stairscummed ID:1-2 and ID:3-4 a bit until I had a decent spell repertoire (notably Teleportation, maybe Invis as well).

Went back to Hole, killed Hotz and bought Detect Traps.

Went to PC, found Grey Altar on PC:2. Converted self to Lawful with the marble amulet from Tywat Pare and then converted altar. Sacced monsters until I was precrowned with Executor(!). Found Book Shop and Stoma/Morgia patches on PC:3, so I did some gardening and sacced for a 2nd pre-crown: Preserver(!). Executor turned out to be ludicrously strong, so I ended up meleeing for most of the game. The book shop had magic map, acid ball, mystic shovel and gave me more castings in several spells I already had. Being a complete noob, I was very miserly with spells and used bookcasting for the util spells as much as possible. This was largely unnecessary... I found plenty of books even without the shop.

Left carpenter/druid decision for later. Went to CoC because I didn't have tele control yet. Finally found a blink dog and milked it for awhile to get a couple corpses. Somewhere along the way, I found Moss of Mareilon and got my Wi/To/Dx up to low 30s using sickness/starvation. Went back to SMC and used Map+Invis+Teleport to get to downstairs. Proceeded through UD and ate oracle corpse in HMV for a huge Le increase(17->23 or something). In the UD, I killed a stupid cat in 1 turn who wandered into a doorway that I had just opened. Finished all the midgame quests with no issues.

Seven League boots and the Tower Adamantium Shield turned up some time before Darkforge. Darkforge was a cakewalk with Executor, but I squandered all the pools without obtaining "LifeSaving for Khelly--didn't realize you can't get wishes while doomed. I also got crowned with the Brannalbin's Cloak and FIre Immunity somewhere around here.

Killed Khelly, snagged water orb and a /Wishing with 1 charge--never used because I was saving it for spare seven league boots or ?ChaosResistance. I should have just taken Find Weakness. Found a dwarven chaos knight vault that yielded charged eternium plate mail of life and eternium caps around this time.

Raced through ToEF using Magic Map+Tele. ToEF was way too easy with this char--I had tons of regen/healing, good artifact equip and I easily wiped out everything with Ice Ball.

Rolled over everything for awhile except for the damned Cat Lord. I tried to melee him a bit, but found out this was a dumb idea and had to use extra healing potions and coward/ice ball(I found a ton of ice ball books, so this was my go to spell most of the time).

Mana Temple was really tough. I got the Stiff Muscles corruption early on(along with many other more or less harmful corruptions) and had to turn back and do the Unicorn quest to progress(luckily I'd recently hit XL30). It took me awhile to figure out how to lure the boss out and then he did a number on me when I tried to melee him. Used a few !ExtraHealing and got severely corrupted. Eventually I retreated to regain PP and then ice balled him into oblivion.

D:49 was super annoying... didn't bring enough crap with me to throw and had to throw most of my wands to get to the downstairs.

D:50 was a bit exciting. I got mana battery corruption 1 step from the first lever, but was able to remove it with the precious corruption removal that I'd horded all game. I tried to melee Balors and that didn't work out so well, so I sighed and broke out Ice Ball again. Eventually I destroyed both levers and got my heavily corrupted ass out of dodge.

Very nice. I used to play Crawl (sthing like 15 wins?) until I went back to ADOM like a year ago. How are vampires and all that new content?

This seems like a very lucky character with all those good artifacts, and a solid win overall. The only things that seem odd to me are:
* druid vs. healer (I always go for keethrax on wizards... the only possible gain from doing the healer quest would be scumming pots of extra healing, which is tedious, and the bosses get harder after level 10)
* cat lord (getting close to him is not a good idea, especially while cursed from Executor)
* D:49 (if you dig a diagonal to the stairs, it's actually a very short route, and you can at least throw Si's or sthing. Throwing wands is kind of funny. =P)

One other tip... with decent Willpower, spells like Iceball can go through walls. It can save you a bit of trouble in places like the mana temple sometimes.

I agree with you about the magic talents: Counterintuitively, they're only really worthwhile for semi-casters. Wizards and priests don't really need them at all.

Very nice. I used to play Crawl (sthing like 15 wins?) until I went back to ADOM like a year ago. How are vampires and all that new content?

The last version I played was stone soup 0.3.4, so I haven't used the new content. I usually go a couple years between playing spurts.

Are you ekiM from CAO/##Crawl? I am Jeff (http://crawl.akrasiac.org/scoring03/players/Jeff.html) on the server.

I usually would take Druid quest, but I thought I might want to reserve the possibility of scumming Jharod because my !GainAttributes recipe had Ultra Healing as an ingredient. In the end, I didn't need to employ any hardcore scumming unless stairhopping ID or playing slots in Casino(this really felt like a bug to me) is counted in that category.

* cat lord (getting close to him is not a good idea, especially while cursed from Executor)

Does being cursed increase chance of criticals or something? I didn't intend to get close to him, but he ambushed me before I could use any tactics like Web or w/e. Also, at the time I thought he was humanoid, but I have no idea why since he was an 'f'.

* D:49 (if you dig a diagonal to the stairs, it's actually a very short route, and you can at least throw Si's or sthing. Throwing wands is kind of funny. =P)

Yeah, next time I'll be prepared(didn't bring sis)... I am a complete newb and this was my first game past Khelevaster.

I actually knew this, but wasn't sure of an easy way to raise Wi much higher(maybe extreme starvation/morgia or something?). I did equip the Water Orb and was severely irritated when I had to dump it for the final levels.

Yeah, the effects are just so small on paper that I figured they'd be unnoticeable.

It's always worth saving potions of boost willpower for just such an occasion. With your 37 base + 10 for water orb + 5 for sword of Nonnak, you're at 52 already, which would get you a few spaces into the wall, and it would probably only take maybe 4 potions to get you up to 99--not that you even need it that high to be devastatingly powerful.

Unfortunately, I've never played on akrasiac - I'm only now getting used to server play. I used to post on the newsgroup as 'chemicalburn', but I don't think I recognize your handle... strange because 0.3.4 was the last version I played, too. :/

Oh, I didn't think of that... but yes, it's not really necessary to be that powerful. :) Also, I like to aim for ultra endings if I can, which makes the black torc actually useful.

Cursed somewhat increases the chances of anything bad happening to you, which includes criticals. We did a challenge game (http://www.adom.de/forums/showthread.php?t=909) on here once where everyone started the game cursed. It was hilariously bad. Basically, the cat lord is one of the NPCs, like the ACW or Eternal Guardian, that I just wouldn't consider meleeing because of their damage output at that stage of the game.
