Decided to play a bard for a change. It appears that they kick ass even without pets! =)

So I wasn't using pets (except to evade cats or just for fun) and didn't have any troubles at all. I was ~13lvl when I came to CoC (due to SMC start).. Some more action and I appear in DH. On my way back for my wand from Thrundarr I decided to read a scroll of familiar summoning (the only time I did it before gave me a greater moloch - so much fun, but incredibly slow, so I grew tired and sacced him myself) and now I received a great karmic wyrm - well, that was damn nice! I had a lot of fun with him, including clearing DT (except Thrundarr) and some other places. In the ToEF I found out that I didn't have means of paralyzing - but Pinky (my wyrm) confused ACW so well that I had no trouble to kill him.

Pinky killed casino shopkeeper, but was severely damaged in the process, so I had to throw all my ultra and extra healing potions at him. Then I took all the loot and we went to the shortcut. On the way I met an ancient red dragon and went to fight him so that Pinky won't take damage. That was a mistake with ~20 PV. I was able to survive, of course, if I hadn't forgotten that I lost my fire resistance when pool-sipping in Darkforge. Goodbye my bard and great karmic wyrm companion! Damn... I could teleport myself away.. But for some reason I decided to use crystal of darkness.. Oh well...

But still the game was insanely lucky and insanely funny.
-Ring of ice in early UD - my 7LB lived throughout the game.
-Surge of power on some CoC level - Serpent's Bite!! guarded by... a vortex. Didn't have the slightlest idea that it could happen.
-AoLS from Darkforge.
-Giant slug corpse on banshee level - I was astonished (once I cleared a whole room of them with a hunting weapon and FoodPres at 100 - no corpse)
-Great Karmic Wyrm companion - ass-kicking awesomeness xD

one time . . . I had a character feel a 'surge of power' on level 12 of the CoC. It was guarded by a named fire vortex. My toughness was weak though and the vortex got to me and did more damage than I had HP to survive :(.

It was guarding Wyrmlance.

Yeah, vortex surge artifact guardians are the best, IF you have the appropriate resistances. If its early in the game though, they can be a bit of a bugger.

Animal guardians can also be fun if you have the music skill.

I wonder if the guardian could be a cat?

I've had a cave tiger guardian (which I tamed) in the gremlin cave.
