New Guy Questions

Hello:
Long time lurker, new poster. I've got 2 questions based off of the RRG game going on:
1) What do you mean stabilizing herb patches?
2) How do you figure out how many turns have patched? I created a number of insta-saves, but couldn't figure it out.

1) Certain herb patterns are stable--they will remain in a fixed orientation and won't spread any more. The most useful looks like this

If you pick any one of the bushes until it dies, it will grow back in exactly the same spot. Other than that, this formation never changes (but new flowers will continue to blossom so it's efficient to pick them).

2) Press :t. This will change the display in the very bottom right hand corner. It alternates between speed, energy, gold and turns (might be one more, don't remember). Turncount is indicated by M: number.
