View Full Version : Mist Elf Weaponsmith - UCG!

After playing around 50 Mist Elves I finally got lucky and had this one survive long enough to win. Killed beggar/mugger for first kill and immediately went to SMC to hit level 5 and dive to HMV - the overhaul of first aid is fantastic and really gives the option of skipping healing when you are Candle birthsign. In the SMC I found an eternium 2HS and a crystal shield [+9, +4] so was switching off between 2HS and hammer + shield for quite a while, eventually switching to spear + shield for DV. Pure 2HS was tempting but without good PV/DV one crit could end your life as a mist elf. Nothing crazy found in UD aside from a wand shop which I never visited again, a few herb patches which I briefly farmed - with my max toughness capped at 12 there wasn't much point at that stage of the game. In HMW I found SLB for sale for 9k or so, which was everything I had. Side note: selling items is near useless as a mist elf as you get completely ripped off, even by ratling vendors.

Got healing, did the PC and found some good potential potions to up my toughness, strength, and willpower. Dove into CoC, farmed a bit in the big room to pump To to 16 or so, and did first quest for Thundarr (Stone Golem). Took awhile to find it, but good news is on my search on the level before the split found a ratling scroll shop! During the course of my search for the Stone Golem he restocked 3 times so he was holding onto around 80 scrolls (sadly no SoCR, but many identify - I had 41 uncursed at the time I won). Of course, he was charging me exorbitant prices so I made a mental note to relieve him later. Went to ToHK to search for Stone Golem and found a neutral altar on level 3 (big room). I was lvl 15 at this point with 3 artifacts spawned, so grinded/sacced to 17 to precrown with Sun's Messenger! Amazing. While grinding I also found a mithril full plate armor [-3, +11] which served me until I found a black dragon scale mail a bit later. Sadly, I melted the full plate down, when I should have seen how high I could smith it.

Didn't have cold source (and didn't get for a long while) so I went to complete the quest and move onwards. Found a wish in a pool and got AoLS, gave to Khelly and made my main stash in the Ogre Cave. DT was on D:9 so I was good for corruptions when smithing, and I spawned the Greater Daemon to kill Glod... he did a lot more than that I found out after killing him (I was camped by Glod) - he killed Ruun, Thundarr, Garth, and finally Glod! This I discovered when I went to turn in the quest and found everyone dead (not that I cared - I was planning on killing them all anyway). Amazingly, Waldenbrook survived, as well as the dwarven mystic. Raided DF and found nothing special aside from a black dragon scale mail which I put on and assorted weapons.

Found a few books at this point including Ice Ball, but tried to read twice and failed - afraid that it would be destroyed I put it off and took out Graveyard + graves, and dove in CoC until I hit the fire wall. Snake corpse was cooked and but forgot to bless and rotted on the way up almost immediately. Banshee room had blink dog corpse (already got -tctrl but was good resort for pool sipping), giant slug corpse, and lightning lizard corpse (-shock is the most crucial for Mist Elves in my opinion). At this point I had intrinsic fire resist, one ring of fire resist, and ring of ice - but had no fourth source of fire resist for ToEF! Any -fire item (crown, red gauntlets, elemental gauntlets) were iron and would burn my skin, and taking a constant 1 damage at 150 hit points is a problem. I lucked out completely when I found Perion's Plate mail from a ratling fencer (which has -fire) and I went to kill the ACW. EASILY the hardest fight I had all game - I had 150 HP at this stage and even with shock resist his lightning bolt knocked me to half health each time. I prayed 4 times there, as well as drank all my healing potions, and got extremely lucky when I killed him with arrows of slaying (didn't find any dragon slaying arrows, though plenty of quarrels). ACW has been buffed up and it took me by surpirse, almost costing me the character.

With that milestone conquered I went to smith for a bit and got mithril boots to [+8,+8] and helmet to [+7,+6] (this might have been before ToEF, but buffed them to max defense) so I switched to my eternium 2HS full time, which served me very well. On the way down to EG I found 2 lesser vaults, another shop (figurine.. bleh) and was rolling in PoGA - I had 6 stashed away which I used once my toughness hit 20 naturally/with potions of toughness. Got to EG but didn't have ring, as I still had no wand of cold. Went back to ogre cave to try my luck with Ice Ball and it worked! Easily dispatched Skeletal King, and went to casino to see goodies they had (Wyrmlance, Staff of Archmagi, 2 potions of education, cursed RoDS, and assorted goodies). Stacked everything I wanted to smith for later and bought some necessities.

At this point I was on day 120 and still didn't have stone circle access as I was neutral (I had fed the ratling 5 artifacts when I became C accidentally) but was waiting for boar skull before turning C again. Found a ring of doom and went boar hunting. Found him within 7 days with Blessed 7LB (killed 4 boars before I found it) but found another PoGA along the way from Ogre army so all was well. Side note: I think I found 10-12 PoGA naturally during the game. Got Amulet from GB and dove into CoC. At this point I had many spells and only had Climbing at 73 so I started to pickpocket everything in sight to get in the thieves guild. I thought the fact that I robbed the raltling scroll shop would be enough for Yergius but whatever. Trained Climbing so next level it was 100 and went to rift. Mostly scrolls, but a few great books including death ray and strength of atlas. Got the weird tome so I was sitting on 10 or so SoCR at this point.

Killed 2 orb guardians in one go (Earth, Air) and stashed corpses in Terinyo (I had all the guardians aside from snake stashed there in case I wanted to eat/exchange them later). Did black unicorn quest for 1 corruption and 6 PoGA. Soon after I found my only Greater Vault (the guaranteed one I suppose) that was Fire Dragon/Wyrm. In there I found Far Slayer, Boots of Divine Messenger, and scorched spear. Bummer here was that I was 28 and waiting for 29 to hit Minotaur City for the Axe, artifact and more PoGA but Wyrm bumped me up two levels and past the cap.

At this point I had 3 RoDS so I wished for blue dragon scale mails for the Blue Dragon Caves, and smithed it up to [+7,+16]. Did the Blue Dragon Caves and finished it at level 44, so after killing the Ancient Karmic Wyrm (I won't try and spell his name) I hit level 46. In the side dungeon leading to the BDC I found my first greater moloch who dropped hulking armor! Score! Melted it down for 106 eternium ingots. I was going to save it for the emperor moloch's armor to wear - couldn't remember if it was a guaranteed drop or not, but I though what the hell.

Killed filk, went to Scintillating Caves, and emperor moloch was one tough cookie. Managed to kill him with blessed demon arrows (only had 4) by shooting him and porting behind to collect. Dropped me my armor and I was off to smith. Surprisingly, it didn't improve all that much. I got it at [-30,+50] and after 100+ ingots it went to [-25, +56]. I got it to -9 rather easily with scrolls of defense; I guess because it has negative DV they never fail. Unfortunately, the quickling bard was nonhostile and my stupid acid ball brought me CN at level 46, and I didn't convert back to N, so I was at level 50 and CN. Whipping myself with a whip of slaughtering was painfully slow because I was too tough to be hurt most of the time. 20 min brought me from 1109 dark stones to 1087 (I needed to got to 999), so I tried saccing 10 gold at a time on a neutral altar crossing my fingers. 2 min later I was NC. I got the ToRR and with a PV of 120+ went to take out Keriax, but first killed Terinyo, and robbed the casino for more smithing goodness. Crowned C- with Hammer of the Gods. I was at day 148 so I wandered around until day 150 and took Keriax out with 5 arrows. Took the corpse with me to give to Andy :).

Dove to D:50 (D:49 gift was long glaive), easily cleared. Read 7 scrolls of peace upon entering the level and hung around until I became extremely corrupted. Stupidly, I didn't realize I had poison hands corruption so dipped my boost strength, toughness potions (stacks of 5 or so each) into holy water which became poison. Smartened up and grabbed some thick gloves and blessed a few boost (2 Wi, 1 speed, 5 dex), and used my last three wishes for SoCRx2 and speed before entering.

Took out Andy with relative ease - he couldn't do much damage to me with 133 PV. The lowest he dropped me was to ~480/530. :)

All in all this was a very challenging game; the beginning for Mist Elves can be brutal as they can't really shop or sell things for gold - finding the Eternium 2HS and crystal shield early on was a godsend. I enjoyed the weaponsmith as I could at least use the random loot to melt down. Skillset is decent but skill advancement was abysmal - Many good skills (Alterness, Dodge, Tactics) were STUCK at 50 or so with +1 or +1d3 modifiers so they took ages to level up to decent level. I only maxed Alertness in my upper 40's - low Alertness with a mist elf made casters very dangerous. Was a bit disappointed that I didn't see more Greater Vaults - found several lesser vaults but greater vaults are so much more fun!

Thanks! Didn't notice the score to be honest, but I'm sure we'll see better ones once we have more people playing the new version. I was so bummed about missing the Minotaur maze as I never went there, even in my scumming days. I would have loved to switch the eternium 2hs for the axe as well.

Almost had a few stupid deaths - put on the crown of science after raiding DF in the wilderness to get the boar and got impure metal burns me for 100+ damage instantly. Luckily I had full health :). If I hadn't gotten Perion's Plate mail I honestly don't know how I'd get through the ToEF; probably resort to pool sipping in DF for red dragon scale mail, which would be a waste for a weaponsmith, as they get =Fire at 32 anyway.

Next game I would want to dual daggers as an assassin but turns out Sting+Needle are iron (which doesn't make much sense), so would be impossible for mist elf. Maybe something to request to change for flavour purposes.

I was under the impression mist elves can safely wield anything, because of gloves insolating hands.

Well, that's logical, if not the case it must be fixed.

I got wind, that they wear one iron ring safely, I ask you. Get that out of the game.

Mist Elves indeed wear one iron ring with no penalties, but anything else burns the skin. To be honest, I haven't tried wielding anything iron (including Needle) as a weapon, but that could make sense. They do start the game with gloves and mithril weapons, so to the best of my recollection wielding iron weapon even over gloves burn the skin. Maybe it might work with thick gloves?

Not sure how the one iron ring rule would affect game balance - elemental mastery rings are made from iron, as well as rings of the clear mind. Being without confusion or potential elemental resists can potentially make it a lot harder (although to be fair, I don't think I have once seen a ring of elemental mastery or minor elemental mastery). They would make a good wish though.

There are more than enough other means to get elemental immunities/resist IMHO. Mist elves, as I see it, is meant to be challenging race. They already are almost immune to combat damage from my experience.

They should have some weaknesses. It just makes no sense really, to be able to permanently have impure metal touching the skin without ill effect.

Challenging they are - honestly I could live without iron rings, but getting resists/immunities is not all that easy, especially in the early game when it is vital. Fire is easy enough, acid if you get a lucky ant corpse, but shock and ice are very difficult, and any vortex or spell (including lightning lizards) can kill you more or less instantly. Also there are no mundane items that grant -conf.

The ring thingy was deliberate, if I remember correctly. A few useful early-game rings are made of iron and it would be a bit too harsh not to let the PC wear them. It could be justified with that the amount of impure metal contained in just one tiny ring isn't enough to cause damage.

I respectfully disagree about smithing - the Moloch armor base is +50 and dumping 100+ eternium ingots into it I only improved it to +56; my other smithed items (helmet and girdle) I also pumped many many ingots into and maxed at around +8 PV. Don't forget, the Moloch armor brought -22 speed and dex (offset by the Cat Ring somewhat), and I had a number of corruptions that added in total +11 more... it was just a combination of everything, including 53 toughness that had my PV that high, not from smithing alone.

You know what else is overpowered in this game? Torgall's inn. A bottomless source of mostly true rumors for 1gp each? Clearly broken.

I' sorry guys, I was able to take a naked bare-handed mist elf up to xl 12 all the way to khelly D:24 through the animated forest clearing every level. Died from drowning, due to player error.

I going to have to report the ring bug.

Well, rings of cold resistance are fairly easy to acquire, and are always made of stone (very easy to ID early in the game for this reason--the first marble/jade ring you find is always cold resist). AMW covers cold for the mid-to-endgame. For shock, I'll stick to my guns and recommend the black torc (assuming it's not iron...) for early game -Fire and -Shock. RoTHK is platinum, which should be fine for -Fire, -Shock, and -Cold later. -Conf is tricky, but helms of mental stability are crystal at least. Double resistance is generally as good as immunity, so rings of elemental mastery etc. are mostly not needed.

I don't think iron rings are an absolute must to be honest - I didn't use an iron ring all game until my battle with Andy as I needed the -Conf - at that point I had the immune to pain talent as well, so could have worn another iron item too.

In that case I would suggest changing either the ring of clear mind OR mental stability to something other than iron (preferably the clear mind as it doesn't grant any bonuses to Le or defense) to give access to -conf.

Regarding your naked mist elf - one small mistep outside of physical combat will likely equate to your death due to such low HP (caster enemies, stone blocks, drowning, breath attacks, trap doors) . Part of the fun and frustration I suppose.

So I look at my wands and say to myself "hey, lets try the wand of ball lightning out!". ZAP! Where does it go? diagonal up-left into a wall, back into me, below-right into a wall, back into me, ad-nasuem. After seeing "Your [item] is destroyed!" (x20) I ended up with -156/80.

It doesn't get more idiotic than that.

Mist elves are easily the most challenging race (and I suspect this was not even intentional; TB never said that he wanted mist elves to be difficult to play). They are horribly vulnerable to elements and stone blocks and ranged damage and poison and.. everything that isn't melee damage. Can you work around all that? Sure you can. But other races never need those workarounds in the first place.

And having melee damage halved is great, but they usually have less than half the hitpoints than someone else would have at the same point in the game. The net gain is mostly that healing (from spells, herbs, regeneration, etc) is more effective for them, but for survivability in melee it doesn't help that much, all in all.
