pickpocketing equipped items

I tried it with a troll on large creatures but it doesn't seem to work.. what exactly are the rules for pickpocketing equipped items with the tinkerer skill? Does the monster have to be smaller in size than you?

Without the tinker skill you can steal equipped items from monsters smaller than you. With the tinker skill you can steal equipped items from monsters of any size. With a troll tinker 1/thief 1 and the minimum one level in pick pockets I was able to steal equipped items from large monsters. Perhaps you were experiencing the bug where class powers randomly stop functioning? If so, saving and reloading should let you steal properly.
