View Full Version : Daily challenge?

With ADOM heading to steam in mind, one recent steam roguelikelike game has a daily challenge mode (spelunky), where everybody gets the same seed and there is a leaderboard for the results. It seems quite popular (on YT/twitch etc). Not really sure if such thing would work with ADOM (and would require some extra coding, to generate all seeds on game start instead on entry like it currently is I believe), as the average game playing time if one doesn't sui quickly is far longer than 1h. On the other hand, it seems like the only way to play competitively with meaningful results comparison. Thoughts? (one immediate thought: scummers. Having all layouts/drops predefined... Maybe no save/reload in daily challenge mode? Considering the length of the game probably won't work)

edit: No save option with few hours+ required for finishing might be unworkable. Make it weekly challenge and keep all saves on steam?

That would be interesting! While there are some things you could do at game start (maybe pre-generate all the levels so they have the same initial monsters and loot lying on the ground), ADOM uses up so many random numbers that two games could start to diverge easily. You mention pre-defined drops for example, I don't know how that would be done.
