View Full Version : First Win! PatMonk the Dwarf Monk - Gate Closer P14

After playing ADOM for what it seems like over 10 years (I found this game on gamehippo.com as a freeware game. I believe the site was named something previous however) I finally have my first win, which involved 0 save scumming, I only made occasional backups throughout my play. This win was definitely spoiled, but it was also definitely earned. Once P14 came out I really got back into ADOM. I found the health bar helped so much.

Anyways! PatMonk was a Candle Born Monk who succeeded a long line of deceased Paladin relatives, The dwarf paladin seem inferior practically due to lack of find weakness. So I decided to roll a Monk and give this a whirl! I usually start by grabbing the waterproof blanket and head to the DD for herbalism. In the DD I found a Lawful Altar which helped me precrown pretty fast. I was crowned with the Ring of Immunity, amazingly enough. Second precrown was the Kinslayer, which I tried using for a fair time with mediocre success, even blessed. I racked up a high game time because It usually takes me a while to get L+ and I have to head to the dwarf dungeon usually to get enough money to supply my crowning habits. I was crowned with the crown of havlor, and after this I knew I had a great shot at winning. I had no real troubles through the early game, I went to darkforge a bit early to look for some elven chain mail, but the Golems were hitting me pretty hard. I found that even Robes (60s) were giving me penalties to my DV... is this proper?

Thundarrs quests were fairly straightforward and I had no issues with the pyramid or water temple. The TOEF was tricky, as I wasn't getting any luck with stairs and the fire giants hit pretty hard. THe ACW fell fairly easily with a blessed PoCC, and a hit or two. I was unable to save Kelly. Soon after I ended up with stiff muscles, and had some serious issues to contend with. With no TC or spells my only option was really DF. Pool sipping was a little crazy, I got doomed a lot, and cursed off and on. I got teleportitis twice, and lost it once. I had TC at one point but lost it as well. Looking at my intrinsics, I got super lucky with everything else (death ray, etc). I finally got a wish and removed my corruption, along with picking up teleportitis and perma invis. Luckily, earlier in the game I found an adamantium mace of hunting and I was able to bonk a blink dog on the head and end up with a corpse, this was a happy day.

The Eternal guardian proved an issue when I no way to get what he wanted and I over trained climbing so my option was to get some EXP so I could train up climbing. I have to say that I was going the speed route and I was getting next to nil exp from mobs as well, also being a dwarf didn't help. I was exploring the wilderness, and to my surprise the bug wilderness was open. I was beating up bugs, but the killer bugs gave me a tough time but perma invis and stealth really helped me stay under the radar. I kicked(dug) as much as I could and managed to dig around the outside of the Bugcave around the statues. Bugs were still chasing me but luckily I got the wand of fireballs and door creation early to cover my butt. I was really going for the elven chain mail too as at this point I think I had no body armor on.

After getting the scrolls I decided I needed more exp so I went to the Minotaur Maze. I got quite lucky I think as I only found 1 or two false floors, and had few extra scrolls of mapping. The Minotaur fell to stunning and melee. The rewards were great, aside from Nature's friend. After seeing the power of his axe, I never went back to bare hands, unless i had to. But after all of this I still had no real way passed the guardian I had to search the ID for a specific wand. Finally got it and continued my journey. The next biggest feat was the cat lord. I massacred a lot of cats about (30). He was a tough opponent, and humanoid slaying worked a bit until I ran out of arrows. Eventually he fell to melee, but cost me lots of healing potions. After the battle, I realized he could have berserked and most likely killed me easily.

The rest of the orbs were no issue, but my idiotic move to train climbing in the wilderness, and traveling in general was causing corruption issues as I was approaching day 271. So I knew I had to act quick. D46? Had an undead vault, I tried to grab the bracers of war but those liches were nasty (this is how my second furthest paladin succumbed when Justifier was disarmed and the undead surrounded my descent). D49 almost got me stuck because I didn't know the best items to throw. Didn't find the potion of uselessness. D50 I dug to the lever walls and I had previously read about the door creation and monster summoning trick. I had all the tools so chose this as my method to finish. Looking back, it looks a bit scummy to finish at level 30, but under the circumstances I felt I had to do this quick. I had a few scrolls of corruption removal, but I wasn't too comfortable hanging down there.

Thanks for reading! I have to say that ADOM really has consumed my life for the last weeks or months. I have always been reading strategies and forums posts, and scheming plans for my character who I play a few hours a week. I have to say its great to have a win, even if it was spoiled, as ADOM is a difficult game. I also want to say that when I started playing I used scumming all the time, and the furthest I got was the fire temple with a level 18 monk. Ever since P14 came out I have dedicated to not save scum, and Its a great feeling! What's next? I don't really have the patience for a caster so I will probably do another melee class.

I think I typed too much so Ill post the deets below.

One final note is that stealth and smithing were very powerful for me. I didn't find any high metal boots until later but smithing was key for me as I never used it with previous characters. Stealth just seemed like I could sneak anywhere past mobs, but I guess invis helped with that too!

Dwarf monk seems like a pretty neat combo. I've always been a bit intimidated by the burden level/weapon/armor penalties for the monk, so it impresses me that you just decided to give the class a try then won. :)

Thanks! The main reason I picked dwarf because I didn't want to learn detect traps. And kicking down walls has so much potential for this combo. The burden penalties can be troublesome until you hit the toef. By then you should be able to carry enough while searching for a girdle of carrying if you are packing. Also don't forget about the packer instrinsics.

I would say the same about your first win with a farmer, that's more intimidating!

Aww, thanks. :o I should mention the farmer's first class power is to carry a crap ton of stuff though, haha! That worked great for me since I don't have the best item recognition skills yet. I was able to carry everything I found to an altar easily, then play dress-up! :p Hmm, playing a dwarf would have saved my farm-girl from becoming a cold-blooded beggar murderer in order to get in with the Thieves Guild. I think food preservation is my favorite skill, though. I might enjoy being a dwarf ranger.

You mentioned trying a another melee class next. Any ideas on what that will be?

I was lugging a tonne of stuff that way, I know it makes one feel safe! Altars are great. Food preservation is definitely great, give someone with "find weakness" a try and you will see mobs fall significantly faster.

I am guessing a Dwarf duelist as it will play similarly with a monk. If you go dwarf ranger - smith as much as you can! You wont regret it!
