Couldn't let 3 posts go by in this forum w/o posting another win, so...

SirHugsalot... Orcish Priest. ADOM can be a grind if you don't have a solid weapon(okay, so I did find Farslayer toward the endgame...) or excellent offensive spellcasting. I used a wicked orcish spear and then a slightly better vanilla eternium spear for the entire game. Next game, I swear I'm going to try Smithing. I've read that it's tedious, but I'm guessing there is a happy medium between upgrading some EQ and mining till your fingers bleed. Should I have switched to Big Punch in this game? It does do quite a bit more damage, but it would mean a huge drop in DV.

As I said, this game was basically slowly grinding it out with low attack power and solid defense. I used burning hands a lot, but ran out of castings in the dwarf graveyard when I successfully scorched an Emperor Lich to death(this was really stupid idea, tho--cost me numerous stat points) and didn't get any more until the Library. I cleared UD right away and found a wicked orcish spear. Little did I know that it was essentially the best weapon I'd find until the TOEF. Started with 8 PV, so early game was a breeze.

Got a double precrown (Wyrmlance and Crown of Leadership) and was crowned with Aylas Holy Scarf and Lightning immunity. Two rings of djinni summong: First saved Khelly and second was in Casino and used on Acid Ball/Rain of Sorrow. I found a crown of fire early, so I was destined for an easy time in the tower and indeed I one-shot stabbed a paralyzed wyrm to death with Wyrmlance. A minotaur named Poon gave up Farslayer in the fire temple, but at that stage in the game I had no Xbow skill and it basically went to waste.

After TOEF, I was able to gain enough XP to move climbing to 100, so I did the rift. Was pretty tough as the Diamond Golems and Molochs were hard hitters given the equipment restrictions. The trip was definitely worth it, tho... the Library yielded a couple *Ball books and some other goodies. After TOEF, game was easy but slow as I had trouble killing anything. I tried to clear a Greater Undead Vault, but gave up when I realized that it would likely take an hour+ of real time using Acid Ball and would probably yield craparts even if I cleared it.

Moved through the rest of the CoC, went back to the surface for the Shield of Raw Steel before Mana Temple and D50. I ninjad the Mana Temple--I just ran past everything and then blinded Nuurug Vaarn and slowly poked him to death with my pitiful spear(just couldn't hit him with quarrels of humanoid slaying at Xbow level 6). My uselessness potion shattered and gave me no gift on D:49. I am not sure what went wrong. I also ninjad D:50 ... killed maybe eight mnsters and dug(see below)/teleported/blinded my way to the handles, which I dispatched with my trusty /Destruction. GG

Uselessness has to move your character in order to give you the artifact. I think if you throw the potion against the wall when you first descend, the pot may break and give no reward...

I think if I was in your position, I probably would have used Wyrmlance for most of the game instead of the eternium spear. You don't get a shield, but at least you can kill things...

[edit] Smithing weapons doesn't help very much by the way. It rocks for armor, but you can't really smith much better than +9 on your hit/damage mod for weapons. After that you can add a few points of DV--so your spear could end up like (+9 2d8+9) [+4,0] after a ton of smithing. You see the difference a lot more with armor: that girdle you're wearing, for example, could be [+8,+8] after smithing; ditto for the bracers.

That is a pretty sad endgame weapon. =P If I can't find something better before doing the pyramid and griffyard, I usually pick up Big Punch and bless it. It tends to one-shot your garden variety undead and is a nice transition between the early game and post-darkforge options.

Maybe you're right, but I fear low DV. Too risk averse, I'm sure.

Oh, well I guess I saved myself some tedium, then. Strange that the smithing class is called weaponsmith... it should be called armoursmith or blacksmith at least. It would probably only be worth smithing penetration weapons or maybe early on as a smith.

I should have mentioned my epic struggle with the Ancient Stone Beast. Actually, maybe it's better I didn't.
