Hello everyone.

I started playing ADOM around 15 years ago. Since that time I come back to it once in a while.

Hard to admit, but I've been always cheating by save scumming. But even when using this shameful practice, I've never managed to complete the game due to getting bored quite fast. As a result, I've never gotten past the casino area.
So I've decided to play fair from that day on. Unfortunately the game decided to punish my earlier behavior, by tormenting me with a curse of early death syndrome.

In short - i'm kinda sick of Terinyo, Kranach, SMC, HMV and UD. The last one especially, since it's the place where most of my early deaths occur.

I'm not new to the game (in fact spoiled to the bone by reading the guidebook), I'm trying to be careful, I'm picking the "newbie friendly" classes like paladin, wizard, priest, archer, elementalist..
... but i can't help dying... horribly... usually running out of PP, swarmed by a breeder/summoner, blown apart by a trapdoor or (last game) running into WMoPC in SMC.... i mean COME ON!

Can you hook me up with some "advanced" tips of how to stay alive, or point out what I might be doing wrong? Or maybe i'm underestimating the difficulty of the game, and it's meant to loose 95% of characters early in game? Help :(

Dwarven paladins and trollish barbarians for example have very good early game survivability, so maybe try those if you didn't. With a trollish barbarian with 30 toughness and strength you will look at 100 health after a few levels and you will have awesome damage and to-hit (just make a trip right away to buy cooked lizards for easier time). Another option is to try out a combination that is fragile and requires careful play. I use gnomish mindcrafters for this purpose. When you know your character is weak, you tend to play more carefully. You could also try bards who can tame many of the early game opponents if going gets too tough. They can tame claw bugs and fire beetles. Or try some hurthling. They start with 4 levels in thrown rocks so you can throw most stuff dead in the early game after you find some rocks.

Also, you don't mention the village dungeon, druid dungeon or puppy cave. So are you doing those before you go into the unremarkable dungeon?

Other than that, don't walk around with 10 health. Not every door needs to be opened. UD is entirely optional. Grind in ID if you need to. Pick Long stride and Quick as starting talents. Learn to run away. I know that trying to lead Yrrigs anywhere with 1 PV and 30 health is risky so I don't do that if I want to stay alive. I know that if I have 30 health and +6 bonus to hit on berserk, a claw bug is most certainly going to kill me, so I run as fast as I can.

In the end though you only learn by mistake and get farther by consciously playing carefully. The vast majority of my characters still die in early to mid game simply because I don't play like I should play them. No problem usually. Occasionally you can then sit down with some specific dude and take your time.

You could try to generate stronger characters, instead of picking first one that game gives you. Some rolls are really challenging and hard to play, for example - difference between 15 St 14 To dwarven paladin and 22 St 20 To dwarven palading is immense, and first one is hard to play even for experienced players.

There is generally no difference or close to no difference in endgame and maybe midgame between different rolls, but early game difficulty varies greatly depending on starting stats even for the same class.

If you don't want to die and your priority is getting farther into the game, you have no business in the SMC, UD, or with Kranach, for that matter.

Just do the village elder's quest (or the druid's quest, exploring the dungeon and not killing the druid yet if you don't feel confident) and then head to the CoC. Do the upper CoC, pick some fights (not the 20th yet) in the Arena. Reach Dwarftown. Do Thrundarr's quests if you can (although in the prereleases the first random monster quest will probably give you a very rare monster - this needs to be rebalanced). And you'll be basically set for the Griffyard, Pyramid, and TotHK.

UD runs are for people who don't mind dying a lot. I have completed the game several times (without savescumming) and I still die a lot in the UD. I don't care because I have a lot of fun that way, and I know that if a character does emerge from the HMV, I'll have a relaxed midgame. But if my priority were to maximize the chances of surviving the early game, I wouldn't set foot in the UD.

This is a pretty difficult opening path. I'm not surprised you're dying a lot.

My normal path looks like this

Character has healing:
-Visit SMC. Check first couple rooms for early stairs or some floor items, leave before reaching level 3 if possible.
-Visit Druid Dungeon. Clear first 6 floors. If I'm pretty strong, kill Druid. Otherwise, I'll come back when I'm around level 10-12.
-Visit Puppy Cave. Clear first 4 floors. Race for stairs on 5th floor. If vault is mixed, leave, otherwise clear.
-If SMC stairs are close, head to UD. Otherwise, walk to CoC.

Character does not have healing.
-Visit HoleInTheLaw and get kill healer quest.
-Dive to VD:4 and kill the healer. Even with a bad weapon you can kill him in 1 hit on true berserk if you get to him below level 5 or so (he adjusts to your level, so it's better to kill him as low as possible). Return for healing.
-Clear VD.
-Visit Puppy Cave. Clear first 4 floors. Race for stairs on 5th floor. If vault is mixed, leave, otherwise clear.
-Head to CoC.

Things I always skip: Kranach quest, saving puppy, saving Yrrigs, fancy first kill, blanket run unless my PC is really strong (trolls). If you're having food problems in early game, it helps a lot to avoid being burdened or strained as this greatly increases your consumption. I know this is useful for training St, but wait till you have enough food to survive first. If your PC has food preservation, make it a priority to raise this skill to 60 (double corpse drops) or 90 (triple corpse drops). This is usually sufficient to eliminate all food problems.

Other suggestions...

-Train missiles early on. Even thrown rocks are very useful and easy to acquire. It helps to have a way to deal with things like karmics, claw bugs, and ghuls from a distance.
-Don't worry about cats. Just kill them. If you are dying the vast majority of your games before ever reaching Dwarftown, worrying about the RoTMC is an unnecessary distraction for you.

I guess, the best tipp that I could give you is to keep the pace slow. Maybe try to play no more than halve an hour per day during the early game and clearly set the aim: Not die during this halve hour. You can increase the pace later when you've got more options to compensate your mistakes. For me that works amazingly.
Also I would not recommend you to play only the strongest race-class-combos. I played with those strong guys for more than two years without getting very far into the game. At one point I started playing fate-rolled characters and tried to get them as far as possible, no matter how low the odds. From that moment on I started really getting better and progressing further whenever I randomly rolled a tough guy. Untill this very day each single one of my game winners was fate-rolled.

Kranach is not THAT hard. Especially with lvl 5-ish magic user and coward tactics. I don't die on this encounter as much as it would be expected :P

Kranach is fine if your PC is reasonably strong. It's just not worth the effort, IMHO. 3000 gold doesn't get you very far in the grand scheme of things.

One thing to pay attention to is your speed. Grabbing quick + very quick + greased lightning + long stride as early starting talents will mean that you can outrun pretty much any monster that you're likely to encounter for quite awhile. For emergencies, there's coward speed bonus as well, but having 114 base speed means you can outrun a (non-lightning) vortex even if you aren't low on HP, or other nuisances who you'd rather not hit you at all like pit vipers and spiders. Even better if you are Raven born. Raven + speed talents is better than seven league boots. This has great synergy with missiles, as you can do hit/run tactics very effectively. If you really want, you can still get this concurrently with treasure hunter--just get Alert, a couple speed talents, then miser/TH at level 6/9 or 9/12. Note that being burdened/strained reduces your speed, as does being bloated/satiated. Better to be burdened than bloated, as you can always ditch some gear if you need to make a getaway.

This is how I usually do it: Get PC and VD/DD quests (depending on skillset), forget Kranach, go to Bandittown for my 1st kill, enter and exit SMC to generate monsters, then off to ID.
Stairhop in ID and w5 for tension rooms -> clear a tension room of rats/kobolds/goblins/orcs = get easy items and exp with very, very little risk. All starting chars can clear those tension rooms with choke point technique.
I always take treasure hunter talent at the beginning, then long stride and all speed related talents.
I stay in ID until lvl 10-12 doing tension rooms, then I'm off to either of the village caves. After that, with lvl 13-14, I'm going through UD and to the Fortress.
This is quite a safe method that allows me to survive the early ordeal with ~70-80% of all chars.
Once you can enter pyramid and have cleared PC, VD and UD, you should be ready for CoC, dwarven graveyard and other nice places. Poof, there goes early game.
At that point I will usually have 1-2 shops in those caves, 2-3 altars and 1-2 herb levels. Some wands of cold drop along, some nice rings etc., useful stuff in general against some situations.
Quite often, if I found a herb level, have the herbalism skill and find a coaligned altar, I will farm stomafillia herbs for food and sacrifice monsters for a precrown.
Depending on what artifact you get, you might really have a nice and easy start.

Sometimes even after I survived all this and I have the required level to enter the pyramid or do the griff quest, I feel like everything I've done/found was average, no good items, some bad calls here and there, some stats drained or pool intrinsics that make my life miserable (you guys know which one), no good weapon, low pv, all caves cleared, 1 or 0 vaults generated... in that situation I will simply shift+Q this char and start over.
It's better to let go after 30-60 minutes of playing a below average char that apparently doesn't have a bright future than waste a day or two only to find out it's day 90 and you're still not even ready to safely pass DH and you missed on the pyramid looking for that source of -para...

Roll a candle born dwarf. The regeneration is nice, and by no means guarantees a win. Paladin works. Focus on the tough skin talent tree. EArly sacrificing to get fate smiles is very helpful. Can't rem if you can get luck from saccing.

good advice.. tbh if you can't get a troll barbarian to dwarftown and into the mid game your doing something wrong.

I see some people suggesting that you play with a strong starsign, race and class. I would actually suggest the total opposite.

You will learn to survive and stay alive much faster with weaker combos. You will die more, but overall you will become a much better player much faster.

I'd have to disagree; I learnt a lot about how to survive the early game playing high elven archers. It's easier to learn how to use your strengths to survive if you actually have strengths. Survival with weaker classes can be a bit gimmicky (true berserking) and grindy.

I wouldn't recommend trolls either, because you really don't need the food trouble to deal with. Orcish barbarians are easy mode already.

Yeah, I think I said that a bit wrong. I did not know how to say it correctly. Not the complete opposite. But brawling your way through the early game, doesn't teach you much about survival.

Using your class strengths, environment and items does with weaker characters is what I was trying to say.

I think it was one of the advices that got my char a wee bit further ;) Rolled an archer, unfortunately he died horribly in a ball of acid after encountering a vortex from behind a corner :( But at least he got past the animated forest! (minor achievement I haven't accomplish in a long time...)

That's great to hear! :-) I'm sure it won't take long untill you see parts of the game that you have maybe never seen before!
Acid vortices are bloody dangerous in general. During most of my games I run into at least one vortex without paying attention. If it happens to be the wrong kind of vortex at the wrong time, the game can easily be over. But maybe during your next run you will run into a fire vortex directly after equipping your red dragon scale mail ;-)

Sooo... this dwarf paly I'm playing right now... I think i'm gonna take a break from ADOM for a while if i'm going to loose him :P

Quite lucky fella, found the Skullcrusher on PC:6, so the druid and crime lord went down pretty easy. Found 3 lesser vaults in CoC before DT. Done all dwarf quests. Haven't even killed a cat yet :P

Though I did some stupid things, he's still alive.
Walked happily into DH:1 (havent noticed the 2nd down stairway in a hidden room -_-) and fought some nasty stuff like acid vortex, werewolf lord, rust monster tension room before even noticing something's wrong. Ancient black dragon made me wonder :P Managed to run away. Lost few items tho due to his acid breath from like half a screen -_-
Accidentally allowed the demon to kill a few DT inhabitants :eek: It's going to be a lot more gloomy place without the inn and the church patrons *sniff*.

Leveling goes kinda slow though :/ only lvl13 so far.. unsure if i'm even ready for the griffyard :/

49/21 DV/PV with a humanoid slaying weapon should be more than sufficient to carry you through Griffyard, if you ask me.

If you want an added measure of safety, you could check to see if you have a method of acquiring cold resistance.


I can see you have that Blessed Wand of Fireballs (12 charges, unless you randomly stumbled onto some other blessed marble wand) which should make the pyramid a walk in the park.
There's a guaranteed source of a good amulet and cold immunity, which with the rest of your equipment, should make Nonnak a non-issue. The rest of the undead should be easy for you to melee.

Actually 49/21 is in coward mode. Currently sitting at 32/23 (normal).

Griffyard turned out to be a piece of cake ;) I've charged the necromancer. 3 swings with the club was enough, he summoned help only twice so the room wasn't very crowded. I've managed to escape to the corridor, slain some dead guys (one wright got me drained though, but I ate his corpse afterwards so we're even). With 120 speed i was able to soften up Griff with some arrows, then 3 swings in melee and he was gone. Golem went down in 1 hit.

Went to pyramid afterwards. I was a bit unsure about it but oh well..
Some nasty dudes on top: elven priestess, black wizzard, brown jelly ("oh shit... gonna be crowded in no time"), hydra, shambling mound, and chaos lizzard on top of that.
Some unlucky arrow shots didn't manage to kill the summoners as fast as i would like to, but strangely they didn't summon anything at all O_o. Wizzard was just roaming around like he didn't care, priestess and jelly went straight into melee range, Rehetep joined em soon. 2 zaps with fireball wand and 1 club swing later he was down. The rest of the mobs were kind enough to approach me in a queue.

I must control myself not to go into reckless mode with this char, coz he proves to be a tough one.
Lvl 15 now, something around 200hp. I guess it's time to farm ID for AoLS and frostbolt, or maybe the assassins guild? not sure how i'm gonna handle that. Haven't cleared the UD yet... hmm... I don't think i wanna go there though.

So my paly is still alive... although kinda stuck :/ he's lvl 18 atm. Crowning with Hammer of gods was a HUGE let down :(

Done all dwarf quests, griff, pyramid, high kings, UD, assassins guild, farmed the hell out of ID in search of AoLS or RoDS with no luck... I got my 1st corruption (cold blood) and reached 60th day, so in other words time spent in ID was a waste :( no ring of ice either...

I guess i'll have to skip saving Khelly..

RNG is a bitch though... Potion of wonder gave me Wish spell -_- too bad it's impossible for me to cast it (~5200 PP -_- )

If you have some ways of not being seen, the level leading into the UD is not a problem at all. The monsters in there are tough, especially if you go in there at a higher level, but they're not known for their perceptiveness. The main annoyance, I've found, is finding yourself between two cats with no way through except to kill one of them.

ID grinding is a very inefficient way if you insist on saving the sage. Did you sip dry the darkforge pools? That's the best shot you have. If you already did that, you could try this (http://www.adom.de/forums/showthread.php/12557-saving-the-sage-with-raw-chaos-dipping).

Or (and this is honestly the best idea) just donīt bother and just get the water orb.

I had no luck with !oRC or exchange so far, and the scythe seems to be waiting for me BELOW Khely's level :/

I've tried the forge, but i need ~5-6 hits to kill the golems so after I got some heavy burns (loosing bracers +4To -_-) I had to run away :(

In my experience it's better to just not try to brute force the Khelly save (and I assume Ultra Ending aspirations).

If you have a coaligned altar handy and the ability to acquire enough piety for dooming removal, just chug the DFG pools and see what happens. If i've acquired intrinsic Teleport Control by this point, and have no alternate source of it, I won't even bother with this, as losing TCtrl is a big deal.

Beyond that, not every PC is meant for an Ultra :) Sometimes you can scum and scum and that AoLS just isn't going to spawn.

I agree with the above. There is generally enough corruption removal available (especially if you're lucky with Mystic) that you don't need to save Khelly. If you happen to find a wish at a point in the game where saving him is worthwhile, great. But most of the time, I don't think it's worth going out of your way to make the attempt.

Depends on your playstyle. Scumming for herbs is about the limit of what I'm willing to consider. For pretty much any item, if I'm short, I do without. Just the items that you receive from quest rewards and guaranteed drops is more than enough to win the game.

with cold blood you should be able to rofl stomp the tower, just have enough spenseweed.

RDSM is a waste in my opinion at this point in the game. You already have enough fire resistance with your current gear, so all it gives you is a couple extra points of PV... which isn't terrible, but you have decent PV already and will likely find some eternium/dragon scale armor in the Casino anyway. Wearing your ring of regeneration will help with the extra fire damage from cold blood.

If you're playing the prereleases, you should have a ring of ice from Dwarven Mystic, I think? You already have two fireproof blankets anyway, and only your cloak (which RoI doesn't seem to affect) girdle and crossbow are vulnerable as long as you wear the elemental gauntlets, so not a priority item either. You're actually in very good shape in terms of equipment. There's no obvious deficits.

I might be tempted to go for spellbooks of Rain of Sorrows. Seven league boots would be an okay alternative, I guess. If you're feeling brave/stupid, and emperor moloch wish would not be out of the question, considering you have some decent penetrating weapons. It's a bit tricky to do in melee without screwing it up though, so might not be worth risking a promising character.

OK, so it wasn't that bad ;)

I decided to jump into tower without =oIce. Hid my ranged weapons (blessed the crosbow and dragon slaying ammo first), put on =oRegen, pummeled my way to the top. Actually I've never reached the tower with drakish char, so I didn't have any experience in the tower with cold-bloodnes. Dunno if it's exactly the same while being a corrupted dwarf :P but it sure was something new for me. My speed oscillated between 250 and 305ish. Ring of regen did its job, HP was jumping like crazy, but roughly around the same value (unless I got hit by something).

Reaching the top level I was sitting at ~170/300 HP, so i decided not to push my luck and drunk !oExtraHealing (probably paniced a bit, but oh well...). Dug through to the bottom part of the temple. Took the elementals in melee. I had to smack 'em a few times with nether bolt (untrained unfortunately), 'coz they didn't go down as fast as I would like to.

ACW didn't notice me at first, but the rest of the guys did, so I dispatched of them in a narrow spot. ACW got mad, so I started to pull back to the corridor. He tried his mind tricks on me, but none of 'em worked. Once I had a clear shot I've put up my Xbow and started shooting him. Missed him a few times, but then killed him in 2 shots! (O_o) <-that was my actual face. I think I could clear the temple easily for exp, but I just picked up the corpse and the orb and ran away. Used my remove curse spell and cooked the corpse, to bring it to the druid. (Funny you can even cook fire immune boss :P )

I also cleared out the forge, but didn't find anything fancy there :( Got my 2nd corruption tho - thankfully its the gills one :P

Went back to CoC depths. Casino was kind of a let down, if you don't count the Holy Scarf, which i might pick up later. The cat lord spawned next to the stairs. I got scared coz he "screamed some words of magic" (crap! did i kill a cat in darkness or something?), but he was nice enough to give me his ring :) i guess he was casting invisibility while i have my SeeI ( question - will it explode when it's in backpack when i kill a cat? playing 1.2p20 )

Also I've officially reached the deepest CoC lvl ever - the air temple. And this time with no save scumming at all :) that's a huge achievement to me.
From this point it's going to be all new for me. (Guess i'm gonna die to a dorn beast behind the corner on next lvl :P )

The saved Khelavaster used to cast invisibilty on himself for no reason too in past versions, I wonder whether the cat lord is afflicted with the same bug.

I believe you only get the damage bonuses for the combined set if the axe is in the left hand and shield in right. Been so long since I used those items though, I could be wrong.

[edit]This appears to be the case on 1.1.1 at least. Having axe in left and shield in right adds +10 to hit and damage, but the other way does not.

I left you, dear readers, at the door of air temple. It went quite well, though meleing vapor rats caused me a lot of corruption : / (tbh a few turns passed before I realized they corrupt on hit and bypass armor O_o )

Earth temple was TOUGH! The temple inhabitants seem not to follow PC through the stairs, so I got quickly surrounded. ASB joined the crew, and started hitting me sooner than i would like to. Eventually got rid of him and his lackeys and left.

Descending further I felt truly excited... Greater undead vault. The diamond-shaped one with a small room in the middle. Cleared the outside. Mana temple went easy. With stealth at 100, 2/3 of the room didn't even move. Nuurag-Vaarn did tho ;) So i welcomed him with some humanoid slaying ammo, went down in a few shots. Grabbed the orb and run away, skipping karmic dragon tension room on temples level.

So as you can see i skipped a lot :/ And here's my question - am i ready for the final confrontation?

Yeah, 56 human/demon slayers I counted. Just get your speed up. If you get real quick through D:49 it might only drop slightly. I think my last character had like -10 off speed as she entered D:50.

P.S. I like your oiled-for-extra-slickness boots. :p

Damn, I forgot about that corruption :/ Also I had to pop some scrolls to remove poison hands... twice! Would it be wise to wish for corruption removal stuff? I still have that RoDS...

Maybe if you plan to clear the whole level. Keep the wish and wish for scrolls if really needed.

I would change some equipment. The intrinsics of AMW wrapping are not needed here, so better wear the highest PV armor instead. Your eternium tower shield is much better than the dwarven shield. I would also replace the ring of regeneration with one of these very nice rings of slaying.

Chaos removal is absolutely the most useful way to spend the wish, but you could keep it to save the cute dog instead. :p

Speed is going to be your worst problem. When I had that corruption (or drakeling) I always arrived with speed 10. You can cast fire bolts on yourself (wand or spell) to speed yourself up. Reading the SoFS will help much, it will summon a GEE that will do a good job of protecting you until your speed is decent again.

Please bless all those demon slayers before shooting them, they deal much better damage then.

One more thing, you're burdened and carrying a lot of useless heavy items. Being burdened has several negative effects. I would trim that inventory a bit and leave stuff like the helm of leadership behind.

Wrt what Grobblewobble said about burning yourself, remember to un-equip your fire vulnerable items, also when popping the fire orb, like those oiled boots. You won't be needing those Climbing sets either.

e: oh yeah don't kill cats when popping the fire orb. It generates a lot of heat on the whole of D:48 when popped, killing most low HP creatures on the level.

D:50 wasn't that bad. Didn't confront Fisty, but hey, it's my 1st win :P
