tl;dr: I won because I got lucky. I hope to win without having to get lucky in the future.


Starsign: Cup. So I picked GE wizard, female for better shop prices. Two talents, Alert and Potent Aura.

Start out by killing crime lord and getting the ~3k gold. Spellbook of acid bolt in shop, but surprisingly cannot afford it. Learn pickpocketing, first kill = don't remember, leave town to explore DD. (amusingly I forgot to acquire marble amulet from Tywat Pare). Spawn Keethrax at character level 7, got out of there and head straight to CoC.

Got super lucky in the early CoC. Find spell book of fire, acid, and frost bolts, also spellbook of Calm Monster allowing me to pursue the cat ring. Found spellbook of Remove Curse, therefore enabling me to try on any equipment without fear of it being cursed (no altars until Dwarftown). Found seven league boots and tower mithril shield. Skipped arena because I really wanted to find that altar. Later found crystal plate mail. That brings me to 21PV at level 11.

Waldenbrook apparently likes female grey elves with 28 Ap (my best cloak was cloak of adornment [0, +3] {+5Ap}), and offers me 300 gold for each uncursed si. I end up spending most of this gold in the spellbook shop conveniently generated on D:8, which had Strength of Atlas which lets me actually wear my crystal plate mail and carry one heap of cooked lizards at once... and somewhat more stuff than that.

Found the Moon Sickle on D:12, stupidly sacrificed it, not realizing the usefulness of unlimited potions of raw chaos.

Find neutral altar on D:14, got crowned. Meant to get a pre-crown, but since I forgot to pick up the marble amulet and I'm too lazy to backstab child dwarfs, I just got crowned because "why not". This will be my only crowning the entire game, and this netted me shock immunity and the Ring of Immunity, which I don't think I've ever taken off for the rest of the game. During the process of camping beside an altar in a corrupting area, I receive the "black eyes" corruption. Free +3 Pe, free see invisible, no drawbacks.

Decide to go through animated forest, as the two staircases on DH:2 are way too far apart. I screwed up hilariously: accidentally applied offensive alchemy while trying to pick up some items. This caused the animated trees to surround me, and I had to spam Fireball and Fire Bolt (not to mention more offensive alchemy) to make it out alive. My kill list says 683 animated trees, this is the reason. By the time I went and came back from the forest, the trees have leveled up so much that I needed 2-3 fireballs to kill a tree. Future treks through the animated forest were performed after abusing several "carrot smell" rooms and casting Farsight on top of that.

Killed ogre tribe, NO CORPSES. So my St was stuck at 14 (hard to be burdened with SoA). Demon killed Garth, so no stat training for all the sis I sold to Waldenbrook. Pacified the big room, farmed some herbs to get Wi and To to 17 and Dx to 25, then got bored. Decide to obtain wand of teleportation (no spell teleport yet).

Upon stepping into a teleport trap on VDDL I realize I don't even have TP control... awkward. Luckily something on the level dropped a ring of TP control, which I promptly wear. Used the wand to get 4 SoCRs, 7 potions of insight, and a ring of ice. This meant I was ready for the ToEF. But I was also level 15, so I decided to do the pyramid. My fire bolt had enough range that I bolted Rehetep to death without moving from the stairs and without him even talking to me. Good times.

ToEF was not much trouble, decided to eat ACW corpse, and used a SoCR to remove the two unwanted corruptions that came from it.

I wanted to save Khelavaster but I was only level 17 (all the stairs in ToEF were really close together, and too lazy to grind). So I went to ID:24 and 25 hoping for a wish, didn't get one, but did get to level 19. I left the ID after picking up another unwanted corruption which I had to remove, leaving me with only 2 more SoCR. I put a few points into pickpocketing, finally went to get my marble amulet from Tywat Pare, joined the Thieves Guild by pickpocketing a tension room of orcs in the puppy cave (which I haven't explored until now), and acquired Detect Traps. Killed Keethrax for the black torc, saved the puppy, then went back to the CoC.

I tried to pickpocket enemies on D:8 for three hours real life time, hoping for a wish or an AoLS, no luck. When I was drinking a potion, I realized I had a potion of exchange, so dipped my stack of 3 rings of cold resistance into it. One of them turned into a RoDS, i wish for "amulet of life saving", and proceed to save Khelly. A few levels down, I sense a tension room and hear many distant winds. I don't want half my inventory destroyed, even if I have the Ring of Immunity, so I leave. Since I have no clue what to do after I leave, I went ahead and got the RoHK without too much trouble. Fire bolt is really good against undead. Then I was still level 19, so I went to the minotaur maze.

I needed real-life paper and pencil to keep track of the maze's layout, but eventually I did it and got the minotaur axe, which I didn't ever use, and Wyrmlance. But more importantly, 6 PoGA. They helped a lot. During this process I made a grave mistake: I prayed for PP so many times (Magic Map is expensive and the maze is corrupting) and I raised the cost of this prayer so high it came back to haunt me later.

I still thought I needed levels, so I entered the Rift... and didn't fall. The library had several molochs... I had no idea how to deal with them, so I berserked them with a phase dagger in right hand and 87 blessed spenseweed in tool slot. It actually worked.

Deliving the weird tome to the Mad Minstrel netted me even more SoCR, so now I'm up to 12, plus 3 PoCC from the minotaur maze. I thought that ought to be enough. Turns out I was right... kinda.

Only now I realize that I haven't done Darkforge and Griffyard. I spam Lightning Ball in Darkforge to kill the golems. I drop most of my inventory to walk through the trap corridors leading to the equipment rooms, only to return to find that Kherab picked up most of my good stuff. I burn him to death with 3 castings of >30 efficiency Burning Hands, pick up the rest of my stuff and the Crown of Science, and leave. Griffyard was a cake walk.

Descent to find a greater undead vault on D:26. Thanks to the help of the people who replied to this thread (http://www.adom.de/forums/showthread.php/12879-How-to-clear-undead-greater-vault), I was able to clear the vault for Executor after obtaining the cat ring first. Air and Earth temples were no problem with my (buffed) 51 Wi and 49 PV, just fireball and/or acid ball and/or ice ball, and there's nothing I can't kill, or so I thought.

A similar greater undead vault on D:45 gave me the Crown of Havlor, at the cost of 5(!) SoCRs from waiting for PP regen and 2 Ap drained from standing next to liches. This brought me down to 4 SoCRs and 4 PoCCs left. At least they didn't drain, say, a stat that's actually useful.

Mana temple was a pain. By the time I got to the actual room, i had 0 PP and no scrolls of power (used them all up clearing the vaults). I pray, and my prayer remains unheard. I hear Ayssia grumbling in anger.

uh-oh.

I wear an amulet of light and frantically apply offensive alchemy. I know Nuurag is immune, but at least I cleared out all the summoners and PP drainers with it. Then, when Nuurag was the only one left, I literally stood there tanking his attacks until I had 19 PP to cast acid ball, cast it, then repeated the process. Apparently Nuurag doesn't regen HP naturally and doesn't have a healing spell, so it worked. I eat his corpse and drink 2 PoCCs to get rid of the resulting bad corruptions.

I make a door on the entrance tile of the mana temple, lock it with Magic Lock, kill everything in the room, cast Farsight, and sacrifice 200k casino gold to convert the altar. I know this is risky, but I thought I had no other option. Luckily this got me to "very close" again, so I figure I'll be fine. In any case, lesson learned.

D:50 was so much easier than I expected. My bolt spells go more than halfway across the map and my speed was 151, so nothing even got close to me. I killed every balor and every purple thing on the map before even touching a lever.

On my way back up from D:50, a water elemental appeared. "Thanks for finding Blup's mom." I found his mom? When? And why didn't you give me this trident BEFORE I went down there, so, you know, it would actually help? Oh well.

I had three SoCRs left, and three corruptions. Read them all, press \, found out that I'm "not corrupted", so I didn't need unicorn quest. Left the chain, and started ruling my people.


SUMMARY: ridiculous early game luck pretty much eliminated any risk of an early death and allowed me to focus more on the long-term play such as visiting the optional locations for additional sources of corruption removal. That potion of exchange dip (which would have been a potion of raw chaos dip if I didn't sac the moon sickle) was not bad, either. I learned the value of intrinsic permanent invisibility, and the vale of saving prayers for when they're needed instead of wasting them when they merely provide convenience. Also, I shouldn't randomly drop my entire inventory containing blessed potions of ultra healing and corruption removal where an NPC could just take it. Probably don't forget to get my quest rewards, don't let the demon kill Garth, and so on and so on. But I think I did well for winning the first time, even though I did exploit offensive alchemy.

Nah, it was a wise decision to let the demon kill Garth. Sacrificing gold for piety is a much better way to spend it than Garth.

I also like getting crowned early and skip the hassle of precrowning, like you did this game. Precrowning takes lots of time and usually you get the black tome for it.

Well done, first wins are important. You did have plenty of luck with early game items, I guess you could have precrowned once and crowned later but in the end what you got turned out to be enough.
I like how people start visiting the maze now, it's really worth the time and effort, especially for poga and that extra artifact that can turn out to be pretty awesome.

6 PoGA is worth a lot indeed! Congratz on your first win! Clearing 2 UD vaults is impressive too! (btw, meleeing Nuurag-Vaarn is also an option if you don't have pp, especially with a weapon like executor).

Congratulations on a superb first win. Most ADOM games have some lucky strikes in them, so don't think that was the reason for winning. Clearing two GUVs on your first win is very impressive, you have bigger balls than me. ;) Well done on eating those guardians, they are so empowering.

@Joe: I tried to melee Nuurag with executor, berserked until he drained 1 Wi and 2 St without landing a single hit, so I switched to waiting for acid balls.

@Stingray1: Actually the two guardians I wanted to eat, Snake from Beyond and Yulgash, both rotted before I could eat them. I was going to pick up the corpse and go to a safer place to eat it, but they rotted within me taking 3 steps with them. Next time I'll remember to bless them if I want to do that.

As a high level spell-caster it should also be possible to improvise some cooking. ;)

Stingray has a point. Fire bolt those corpses then maybe remove curse from them until the moment you can eat them.
Personally, I never eat chaos guardians' corpses but I understand the desire for power when people do that.
It's a 50/50 situation, something I love about RPG games that leave the choice to the player.

@Blasphemous: I ate the guardians because I had 12 SoCR and 3 PoCC, I thought that allows me to eat at least a few of them without having corruption trouble.

@JellySlayer: OOPS, I remembered things in the wrong order. I did the rift, maze, and RoHK in the same trip, but I must have gotten to level 22 in the library before doing the maze.

All wins are special. Even the cheating ones are. But those are special, in the 'special ed' sense, except with less dignity.
