Yeah it's been happening for the past few prereleases. Quite annoying, he once stole 30k and I only got back around 22k.
I was also surprised to see the message but got used to it since.

Yes, very annoying, though it finally gives the money belts a reason to exist. Shame they show up so rarely in early game.

That is not how things work in the world of chaos, chaotic characters and their gods don't have some hidden pact towards each other. Each for himself, you get rewarded for giving things to your god yes. There is no concept of you will get pardoned in their world.

Besides the god of thieves is taking from the thief, not the PC.

A cool thematic touch would be if this gets extended to player characters that pick pocket gold.

Up to now, thieves were barely an annoyance. Now they're one of the many things in ADOM that make you want to kill yourself. (At first impulse - once you've thought about it for a while, you will want to kill Thomas. I think that was his intention.)

I genuinely fail to see the downside!

I noticed it for the first time in p20. Love it! My first thought was "How can I join his cult? Or at least find his altar???" :-)

I actually had that happen in a previous (I think pre 5) version from a ratling thief. Only lost 2000 or so gold, but even so ...

I have no problems with this at all as gold is really far to easy to come by.
