Only week after winning with my Dark Elven Paladin, I managed to clear the game with another hero.
I really wanted to play an even more caster type-class after the paladin win, but realized my tactics and knowledge in spellcasters wasn't quite enough to score me anywhere near a win yet. Thus I decided to play another semi-caster.
Early game was once again bouncing around in the eastern caves, SMC, Dog cave, Druid dungeon. I leveled there to around 10, eventually going and killing Keethrax. I decided to pick up herbalism, although that almost bit me in the ass, when it was time to go to the Tomb of the High Kings. I got a super easy Thundarr 1st quest, and got it done in the next level after Dwarftown. Around these level also was the only time I was having problems with burdened and used a sword + board for just a little bit. I quickly discarded that as I realized the damage potential wasn't anywhere near my unarmed - I did continue to carry around a sword and a shield for the whole of the game, which I never used.
I found a RoDS and used it for AoLS, was the only wish I got in the game, and also the first and only time I've yet to save Khelly. Every time I've gotten a wish this early I've used it on some sort of survivability towards ToEF. Saving Khelly and doing the Water temple went quite easily, although I was still lacking a way to get over water (other than swimming from our friendly neighbourhood water dragon baby). The pyramid loot proved to be one of the most useful ones I found, and I continued to use both of them untill at D50 I found an AoLS.
ToEF didn't bring me a hard time either, although at first I had to hunt for a corpse to get intrinsic fire resistance - I was unlucky with the crowning immunity which was acid, definately a bummer from my point of view. Taking out the Wyrm in a ranged manner was no feat at all, as I had leveled my bow a bit and I had some dragon slaying ammunition and a couple of regular slaying ammunition.
My only problem was that I had only found a good source of spenseweed, no moss of mareillon nor morgia roots. Eventually I came by _3_ good bush formations around cat lords level, which I then farmed for a little bit - maybe 90 morgia, 60 mareillon. This gave me a little bit of a boost as I had quite low toughness still at this point.
I had a huge problem with the cat lord as he shrugged some 5-6 paralyzation wand zaps and thus forced me to chug some 3-4 blessed extra healing potions, but eventually it went through and I just meleed him to death in a Berserk. The bunny level was easy as ever, dig down and profit.
In lightning temple he just came to me after summoning some mobs and it was a cake to rid of him and collect the goods. In earth temple, which I predicted to cause me some problems (I had died there on my previous character, archer) as I had no penetration or good spells/wands to load. I guess the raw damage was quite enough as I hacked through the waves of monsters coming through walls and then getting to the boss itself, I think I used slaying ammunition on him to wound him before meleeing him to death.
Mana temple was a drag as I got my stats drained quite painfully, wasn't really in a danger of dying at any point though.
What really was surprising to me was the fact that I had a huge amount of corruption removal, atleast I thought I did, but I hardly could keep myself at around 6-8 corruptions. Getting attatched to ChAoS in d50 against those masses of writhing chaos was annoying, twice. I think I started with 3 potions of cure corruption and 9 scrolls of corruption removal as I decended under the firewall in CoC. Used them all and woulda definately wanted to get rid of some annoying ones in the end.
In d50 i cleared almost all of the area, killed fistanarius with ranged attacks and his minions with melee (this might be the reason for the heavy corruptions i got). At one point I didnt realize I had gotten poison hands corruption, and I dried to drink from my blessed extra healing potions AND blessed ultra healing potions... This was a huge set back as I had burned through all my spenseweed also. I did luckily have some cursed and normal ultra healings still in the backpack, which I then blessed having gotten rid of the corruption.
Ultimately the lategame was made quite simple with on-demand teleport spell from Khelly and the corruption removal repertoire. After this I think I will try to get a caster rolling now - or maybe try some sort of special ending.
