what?! Really?

So i had a lvl 13 dwarf paladin, fire res & cold res with 147hp and was on on the infinite dungeon. then a cave man pops up. I've killed a lot of these before with no difficultly. but this guy hit me and brought my paladin from 147hp to -9. With just 1 hit!!! Any body know what happened? And i did VD first then lvled inID then did PC. what is my best option after that? Kinda confused on what to do next. and around what lvl do i do it at. thanks in advanced

Was there a special message in the room you were in? "All sounds are muffled" or something means that you take much more damage than usual

Sounds like a muffled room, as StViers pointed out. All damage from monsters is multiplied by 10 (I think). After doing the VD and the PC, the best place to go next would have been the CoC, unless you popped into the SMC to generate level 1 monsters at the start (even then you would have to move fast to the downstairs since newly spawned monsters would probably kill you pretty quickly).
