tl;dr: 1st win, dark elven mindcrafter; quite hairy until Earth Temple then steamrollered everything until YASD by typo after closing the gate...

The traditional 1st win wall of text (starting with the end), should anyone feel like reading:

So, like all good stories, let us begin at the end. Zennor had wiped the few beads of sweat from her brow and smoothed over the scratches from wiping out every last trace of ChAoS from the gate. As she made her way back, she did a favour for an old dragon, killing his old enemy, half a dozen other powerful wyrms which might take Sraxxy's place, and a few dozen lesser dragons. She picked up quite a nice pile of junk from this and was rewarded with more by Shaarad (with whom she was now on first name terms).

Having a healthy distaste, as all elves do, for undead, she also exterminated a greater undead vault - summoning help for the summoned hordes with Pebbles, the Greater Earth Elemental. Zennor was hoping Pebbles would shield her from the Lich King's stat drains, but Pebbles preferred to run off in chase of spectres. Anyway, some time later she made off with another large pile of crap and loads of gold.

On the way out, she was looking forward to a bit of tourism round the Drakalor Chain - perhaps exterminating a bit more corruption to boot. First though to sacrifice the 5000 stones of gold and drop the crap she's carrying. Pebbles wimps out against a Greater Moloch and disappears into the wall, leaving Zennor to splatter it repeatedly with her trident. Perhaps distracted by this new victory, she decides instead of visiting the nearby altar to instead leave via Darkforge (killing the ugly dwarf on the way).

On to the assassin's guild to pick up a nice dagger I hear the boss has got. She kills him easily, picks up the dagger and enjoys a brief binge of splattering all in sight and feeling invincible before being reminded that she is, after all, only flesh and bone: you feel hungry. She quickly pops a herb in her mouth before continuing: The blessed stomacemptia herb glows in a sick green light! You start eating ... you are done eating the cursed stomacemptia herb. Realising her mistake, she carefully picks out the right herb and munches that, impatient for the splattering to continue: You start eating the stomafilla herb. You are crushed by the enormous pile of shit you are carrying! You die....

And so, another YASD due to walking tank syndrome. But also the first time I've got beyond the Air Temple and my first gate closing since I started playing 0.8.0 as a teenager, so I'm definitely counting it as a win :).

In a slightly more conventional order:
Began by visiting SMC then prowling the top of the ID. By level 2 I already had a +4 scale mail, decent sword and a large shield, and so with 7 PV had a relatively easy start. I wanted to play lawful (I like roleplaying, within reason, and wanted to be a L character but with some dark elven mischief too) so saved Yrrigs, but found I couldn't get the reward as I was still chaotic. I took Twatty Pere to the bandit town but no amulet or L boost. Did the puppy cave which got me to level 10 but didn't help the alignment situation. Got the Hotzy quest but as I was prepared to deliver the final fire bolt zap, who appeared out of nowhere but Twatty Pare, denying me the rewards. Eventually went to a N altar found earlier and changed alignment.

Lawful altar on D:3 which got me a precrown as I was still only LN (which I never normally do - usually play N so easy to go straight for a crowning) - Crown of Leadership which was nice. Went off to Griffyard at level 13 - soon gained alignment to L :) but then lost all my piety by nomming wights and becoming NL :( Still, got a few points of To and lots of nice loot. Went back to CoC to get back my piety then grabbed the \oTele and did the pyramid after charging up my \oFB which Thrundarr generously endowed with 0 charges.

Did CoC graveyard with no probs (some of my chars seem to get constant stat drains, and others none), water temple easy enough. Found WDC on way to Terinyo with snake corpse - took Twatty Pare along for the ride but unfortunately only had the one blue hat between us... Payback sucks. Cleared Darkforge on the way back with a phase dagger found in Griffyard, which finally got me to L+.

Did a "pulsing surge of power" room below water temple and got hammer of the gods which was immediately sacced along with Big Punch, the scythe and pretty much all the other artifacts I found which were all shite. Then spent weeks alternating between hunting the big room for a =oIce and saccing stuff trying to get above "very close". Eventually tried praying anyway and was crowned with =oImmunity - initially thought a ring was a bit pathetic but realised fairly soon that it's really good.

Did ToTHK (had enough castings of frost bolt to get to the island) and then tried my luck in the ToEF with one fireproof blanket, wearing fireproof stuff and with only essentials. Blanket burned in 4 turns. Left. Came back with only indestructible stuff, scouted the tower but didn't dare attempt the temple. Ended up draining darkforge for a wish which I pissed away on =oIce, but also got some nice intrinsics including invis, see invis and poison hands. Also doomed twice. After that, the tower was fine - as usual (in my limited experience) the wyrm obligingly comes out of the temple to you. Stunned, poisoned and shot the wyrm and took it to Terinyo.

Casino full of crap. Lost a !oCC to a white dragon vault below it. Cat lord very scary (I had run into a cat whilst running through webs earlier, which was annoying as I thought a DE + =otMC would be cool). He ran away when out of sight so had to chase him down - eventually found him in a dark room. He was paniced, hitting 6 times a turn and got me from ~300 to 32 HP in one turn on coward. Eventually managed to paralyse him, confuse him for good measure and let my sword of sharpness and poison hands do their thing. By far the hardest and most exciting fight and I got a measly 300k xp for it...

Air temple was probably one of the worst for me. I hadn't tackled it for a very long time but remembered it was supposed to be the easiest. Perhaps so, but running straight into the central room and trying to berserk Yuglash is not apparently so wise. I confused him so he kept sneaking away, elementals would regularly hit me and Yuglash got one hit in for >200 HP. Amusingly though he did blind himself on one of his own traps, then step on a fireball trap causing his summons to start attacking him. Also lost the only 7LB seen, oops.

Picked up mana battery now and had only one !oCC and one ?oCR for it. I seemed to be getting bad corruptions and anticipated needing wands badly in the later battles. Soon got another corruption so removed this and MB. Then immediately got stiff muscles. I was now really scared of corruption later on, with no removal options, so did the only thing I could... which was digging all the great treasures graves in the chain then spending about 50 days scumming the big room for a =oDS. Eventually pickpocketed one, shortly followed by a !oCC, and also got many !oStat and a few !oGA.

So, back into the fray - earth temple was easy peasy - ASB was immediately stunned and killed with about 6 shots. Went down to the mana temple taking out a GM for the XP. Was terrified of the MT but it would seem Nurgles was more scared of me - one time he came to the entrance and I blinded him but lost him in the crowd. He spent the rest of the time cowering in the far corner, so I had to clear the temple - a couple of scrolls of power & GTB for the eyes did the trick. He was already critically injured when I got to him from the poison so took him down in one shot. Only got one more corruption - in the end didn't get anything nasty after stiff muscles. RCT arrived at last. From around the earth temple I don't think I ever lost more than about 20 HP in fighting.

D:48 was frankly ludicrous - are the grues just free XP? Every one just stood there whilst I stabbed it with the RCT - they didn't ever even swing at me.

D:50 was dig to levers, realise monsters are much tougher and a shield would be a good idea, kill them and the balor, close lever and lock a monster on it, repeat wit the other, teleport into the central room and spam lightning bolts until the balors have noticed me, teleport out and kill them all with confusion and thrown RCT, then kill everything else.

What I've learned:
- Don't be so afraid of corruption - the rate isn't that much worse in the final fights than ~ D40. (I didn't say, but it was already past 90 days when I fought the tower, which is normal for me).
- When looking at YAVPs, don't think that those are the stats for going into the end fights. I had ~300 HP on entering D:50 and over 700 on leaving.
- Saving Khelly is really good (I've never done it, but scumming for an AoLS would have been easier than scumming for corruption removal later).
- When you start to feel invincible, you're going to die. OTOH, if you think something can kill you, you will die.
- Mindcrafters are awesome. Of course I always knew this, which is why my first win was one.

That reminds me of dying to poison recently. 'You feel the poison coursing through your veins. You start to eat the alraunia antidote... You feel the poison coursing through your veins. YOU DIE!' If only I'd drank one of my potions of cure poison which takes just 1 turn...

DE Mindcrafter is... mmm.
They really are powerful in the late game, and DE ones especially deadly with find weakness and usually quite capable of dodging nasty magic with that alertness trained from the start.
I just finished a game with GE mindcrafter few days ago and although the skill set and artifacts found all sucked, I still had an easy late game, assassinating things from outside of their LoS with NotE and GTB; everything else died to thrown rune-covered trident.
