My first game in p21. Lots of things changed.
I wanted to see how difficult the endgame has become. So I rolled my fav R/C and played in my normal style, to see the difference.
I saved the cute dog and descended the UD. On the way I found a few morgia roots, so I raised Toughness a few points. Found a couple of good PV items too. With that and PV talents, Kosen became pretty buff.
In D:2 I received my first ever message of a surging pulse of power. Made a mental note and moved on.
The first Thrundarr quest turned out to be easy. Descended to just below DT, since I often seem to find lesser vaults there. And sure enough, there was one. Went back to the surface, cleared the top of Griffyard and killed Griff himself to become level 13. Then I went back to D:2 and used monster detection and wall kicking to access the treasure room. It had Wyrmlance, guarded by an ogre king. Lured the ogre away to another level, then came back to slay him when I had found the weapon. Great weapon for the early game.
Did the pyramid, finished Nonnak, dug up sword. Went back to DT to collect the rewards and get the 2nd quest. Made a dive through the AF, talked to Khelly and retrieved the water orb. Along the way I gained TCtrl, at the cost of falling to N and losing my piety. Went back, talked to the dwarf elder and then to the mystic. Failed to notice that completing the second dwarf quest had pushed my alignment barely back to L, so I got the axe instead of the good stuff.
Finished the dwarf quests. I also got the shield, so in the end it wasn't so bad. I became an axe & shield monk. Selling useless items had by now gotten me enough gold to get crowned (cheap for a dwarf), without even having to kill any shopkeepers for it. Got RoR. Total PV was very high now, especially because I had gained my first corruption: scales!
Taking things slowly, I did some more optional side quests. Druid, High Kings, killing golems. Went to the ice queen. One yeti dropped a corpse, I tasted it. Apparently these taste very bad. Didn't notice any stat changes.
Went to clear the greater vault in the frost giant dungeon. It had giants, very nice. I gained heaps of items and 4 more points of strength from corpses. Now I was more than ready for the tower. Cleared it without any trouble, killing the wyrm in a "fair" melee.
Now I made a deeper dive, to the casino. Stole the good stuff. Went to the cat lord and obtained the ring. Then back to the surface. Changed my outfit to optimise DV, speed and willpower instead of PV. Cleared BugCave (relying heavily on wand of fireballs and door creation, to block off side tunnels).
I had found a RoDS. Used it for magical writing sets, wrote additional magic mapping and charging. Had more than enough mapping and teleport charges for the maze now. I was lucky this time, I didn't have to backtrack at all; I happened to arrive at the bottom at first try. The emperor fell to a wand of paralyzation. I teleported back to the surface, ate the corpse and drank 6 PoGA. The random artifact was True Aim.
Time to finish the game. Regular levels are indeed messy now. I didn't clear them, just went straight from temple to temple as fast as I could. With monk running speed (and later switching with hostile powers, too), I could avoid most of the fights. I only stopped to kill dragons and greater molochs, of which there were many.
The most dangerous about the new monster spawns is perhaps the huge number of higher mimics and doppelganger kings. I switched to amulet of free action and killed dopple kings with \oFireballs.
The temples, as well as D:50, were actually easier than the regular levels.
