View Full Version : Hi guys! Got a few questions.

Hi Everyone!

How are you doing? I hope it is good.

I am playing a weapon smith right now and I got the Mana Battery Corruption. I don't have any corruption removal stuff right now, so I don't think I can get rid of it. And I found out that it removed the charge from my wand of teleport!

Now I was thinking, I have a scroll of teleport. And I have the wand. (Wands don't say how many charges they have left anymore now?) And I have a ring of teleport control. Can I teleport into the little room in Dwarftown and will that give me corruption removal? I can't remember. And, if I do, will I be able to get back out?

I bought a drink from the Bar in Dwarf Town, but for some reason after I bought a few I had no booze in my inventory. So, did I get ripped off? I only wanted the stuff to recharge my wand.

Also, if I can find some thick gloves somewhere, will that fix the problem? Lastly, since I'm a weapon smith, should I just ignore the mana battery? I think I will need a wand to be able to get across the bad water in the Skeleton King lair. Unless there is another way. If there is another way I would appreciate if anyone could tell me! Thanks! :)

One other thing as well. Like I said I am playing a Weaponsmith and have been going on lots of adventures. And one of them was I went to the Dark Forge(?) and had a wand of teleport and a magic scroll which revealed the whole level to me. I had my control teleport ring on and when I tried to teleport I was moved somewhere else. It said something about some sinister thing happening. Is this new? Anyways I fought my way out of the Dark Forge with a Big Punch and lots of healing potions. I also found what I believe is an artifact crown hidden in a little room off to the side. But I ran out of Identify Scrolls so I haven't used it yet. Any ideas what it is? Also, I found some Secret(?) stairs down in the Dark Forge. I didn't take them though but wondered what was up with that.

Oh andI talked to the evil dwarf guy in there. Should I do his quest? He wanted me to kill the Druid in Terinyo. Now I am lawful, so I am thinking I will not do it, but thought I would mention it here. Should I maybe kill this evil Dwarf instead? How strong is he? I killed all his golem buddies.

And one last thing. I found in the Dark Forge an Eternium Halberd (Or Pole Axe or something two handed) of Corruption. It is very good cause it has 6d5 I think and gives maybe +18 to both stats. Will it corrupt me if I use it? Or is using a shield just better?

Thanks everyone! I hope you have a good time playing this and have a good weekend! :)

Hiya. Your plan for teleporting in and out of that room is basically sound, as you can wrest the last charge from the wand to get in, and scroll use the scroll to get out, HOWEVER:
- There's a 1/4 chance the little man inside the room will be in the square you try to teleport to, making your teleport in fail.
- The little man only has a 50% chance to give you something that cures corruption, and only if you're the right alignment.

There is a room in the High Mountain Village with a guranteed scroll of corruption removal, although it's always cursed so you'll need holy water. There's info in the ADOM Guidebook if you want to google it.

Buying drinks from the bar just gets you drunk, you don't get potions of booze sadly.

Thick gloves don't help with this corruption. Weaponsmiths CAN ignore mana battery, but yes, you will need a way to get to the Skeleton King lair, and you won't be able to use wands, except to wrest the last charge from them.

Darkforge doesn't allow teleport control anymore. Yes it's new, since people used to teleport straight to the loot rooms at low levels, bypassing the golems.

The artifact crown is potentially useful, but also dangerous. Again, the ADOM Guidebook has information if you want to look it up.

The stairs go down. Although they might be locked, depending on how far you've gotten in the game.

You are correct that most lawful (and sensible) characters don't want to do the evil dwarf's quest to kill the good druid. The evil dwarf is very strong, much stronger than the golems.

Weapons of corruption corrupt you when you use them, so I would only use it sparingly.

Hope that helps, and remember that the ADOM Guidebook has most answers if you want spoilers!

I just want to point out one other thing, since you have a promising character going:

If you're cursed or doomed, you might not be able to get that last zap out of a wand with zero charges. Before you try to get in and out of the Mystic's room or the room in HMV make sure your god thinks very highly of you.

I thought -of corruption gave you corrupting attacks? These tend to result in either monsters dying or transforming into chaos rats/spiders/purple j's.

As others have said get a potion of holy water, some booze if you can find some just in case, and go for the hidden high mountain village scroll. The Dwarven could leave you trapped with no way out.

There are "corrupting" weapon and weapons "of corruption". The former corrupts the player when carried; the latter corrupts monsters when you attack. Neither of these effects are particularly useful or desirable, IMHO.

Hi guys! Thanks for the information. I will give it a go at the Mountain Village. I was lucky to get through there early on in the game. I can just pickaxe around till I find the secret spot right? I think I know where it is. I'm pretty sure I found it on another character once.

Also, so the Eternium Two handed sword of Corruption is a bad idea then? It corrupts me by using it or by carrying it? I will try to use something else. As a weapon smith is there any way to make a normal sword (iron) not decay or rust or break? It is of Sharpness and is pretty good. Or is it better to just use a Mithril sword of Mayhem instead?

Thanks again! Have a good weekend! :)

A pick axe won't work. You'll have to TP in. I suggest the scroll first (in case your literacy fails you). You may still get stuck in there if you fail to read the SoCR(AFTER blessing it) *and* your wand of teleport fails, but ... I'm not sure there's another option?

And if literacy can't fail you that's definitely the order you want so that you can recharge and keep your wand.

Thanks for the help everyone! I got the scroll from the mountain village and am cured of my corruption! For Now. <_<

So, a quick question. What's the difference between different kinds of Dopplegangers? I have been doing fine against regular dopplegangers and Doppleganger Lords(?) but just ran into a DoppleGanger king who hurt me badly. Luckily I had wand of stunning that worked after a few tries and I stunned him. Then I used some door maker wands to wall him off in the room. Then I locked the doors. Now, he happened to be in the room with the stairs, so can he unlock the doors and get out? Also, any tips on killing him if it comes to that?

Also, I ran into a MolocH! O_o. I ran like the wind then used a teleport from my wand with the ring to get away, but he is kind of completely in my way. Any advice on killing him? I thought maybe the wand of stunning? And I have a wand of trap creating that might help. Or, what are some things you need before you can beat one in a fight? Right now my sword is the Mithril Sword of Mayhem, and my shield is the Rolf's Saviour.

Thanks again! Wish me luck, I'm on my way to fight the skeleton king then probably the Water Snake. Thanks!

Doppleganger and doppleganger lords are mostly nuisances that confuse and deflect arrows. Lords can be a bit dangerous if your PV is low and you have a hard time resisting confusion. Doppleganger kings are lethal in melee. They take off something like 40% of your max HP per hit, and get many critical to do much more than that. They also match your speed. And possibly DV? They're hard to hit anyway. Best is to kill them with spells or wands, or run away. I like wands of poison for them. Arrows don't work, as with the others.

Molochs are slow but powerful. They do lots of damage in melee and punch through armor. They walk diagonal, so you can dodge around him easily enough if you don't want to fight him. They also regenerate health and are immune to lots of effects. I suspect stun won't work and traps probably not either--at best, you can teleport him. They also have monster PV. With your current gear, I wouldn't bother unless you have a decent pile penetrating or daemon slaying arrows.

Re: doppleganger kings, is it just luck or circumstances on my part or have they gotten weaker lately? I'm currently cruising through the game with a Ratling Bard on p20, and have met like 4 doppleganger kings (or queens, in my case) so far. I got into a melee with two of them - actually vanquishing one that way, and while I eventually fled and bolted the other one to death, her blows weren't actually that strong and I only had to run because my damage output was a bit slower. I could dance circles around her in Coward mode despite the occasional confusion. On the other hand, from 1.1.1, my memories match your post here - extremely deadly in melee, avoid at all costs, etc. So yeah, what's up with that?

HI Maul and Jellyslayer!

Sorry I can't help Maul. I don't know the rules for DoppleGanger Kings! So, just to be clear, then PV does NOT help against them?

Also a question about smithing. If I get a "despite my best efforts I fail to improve" something, does that mean it can't be improved? And if I get a "You fail to improve" the thing, does that mean if I keep trying it will eventually work? Oh, and any ideas on where I can get more Ore or Ingots? I've been saving almost all my metal stuff and it doesn't seem like it's enough. I think I had bad luck though cause in the Dark Forge almost all the armor was clothes or robes and not metal, so that might be it.

And, is there a way for me to repair my own Pickaxe? I couldn't figure it out no matter what I tried. I ended up having to get the dwarf smith guy to repair them for me, but he is expensive.

Thanks guys! I will try to make a teleport trap for the Moloch and make him go away. Would using a Teleport wand on him work? Do I have to be right next to him for that, or is there a range? Also, would a Pit trap work? (Make him stuck in the pit so he can't get me.)

Oh and one last thing, that might be a bug. Apparently you can't dig out Ant holes? I have an ant nest on one level and thought, I'll just dig it out and beat the Big Ant right now, but if you try to dig on the hole it says the ground is too hard, which is weird. Is this just not a thing?
Thanks!

Deathwind

What are you trying to improve?
ore comes from digging walls with a pick axe, ore is smelted into ingots
Dark forge is normally a let down...
scrolls of repair will fix broken items, blessed pick axes break less often
the dwarf charges based on item value, beat up some slimes and oozes with your pick axe to lower the cost

More PV actually makes things worse; their attacks penetrate armor, and they mirror your PV.

I won with a weaponsmith a few months back (posted in YAVP) and did quite a bit of Smithing so I can comment on the messages. In both cases you can continue to try to improve - I think the hard caps are quite high and not (realistically) attainable. From what I remember the # of ingots you receive from melting items down is based on weight, so if you can find an ultra-heavy version of something hold on it so you can melt it down later. The casino is great for this if you plan on robbing it. I recall getting a mithril full plate that melted down to 8 ingots or so.

If you can find an ant level grab a ring of invis and hang out there for awhile - let them dig the entire level out for you and you'll find plenty of ore to smelt

JellySlayer

There are no hard caps on smithing, AFAIK. Only your patience.

Even if there are no hard caps, by the time you start getting "despite your best efforts the item does not improve" messages, it's much harder to get any further. So at that point you're probably better off using your ingots on another item.

Dopple kings are best dealt with with a wand of fireballs and high DV / coward tactics.

HI guys!

Thanks for the help. I used my pickaxe to dig a path around the moloch and he is too slow so if he is one way I can go the other.

I killed the High King and the Water Snake! The King was very easy. I had to use a healing potion a few times on the water snake and some poison cures but he wasn't too bad, probably cause I could go invisible with a ring I had the whole time. He kept panicking, but luckily I had a stack of plain arrows that had like 40 of them. WHen he ran even though the arrows didn't hurt him he was annoyed I guess cause he kept coming back to fight and I beat him that way.

Speaking of which, is there any way to learn swimming? It would probably be handy to know. All my good skills are already leveled up, and now all the other ones are really low on the dice when I raise them. So swimming would be nice.

Also, any advice on the Fire Tower? I only have one fireproof blanket but it is blessed. I do have two rings of fire resistance and the elemental gauntlets but don't know if that will be enough. I think I would like to use the Platinum Ring, but I don't think it helps with fire so maybe I won't. I don't have any rings of Ice!

Also, I'm not sure if my sword will cut it against the boss? It is a "Mithril Sowrd of Mayhem" (+3, 3d8+9) [+1, +0] It's the best I've found and smithed a little bit.

My shield is the Rolf's Saviour, and I have 48 PV, which seems like enough, but I was getting hit kind of hard by the Water Snake.

If I remember right, not too far past the Water Snake is the Casino, and I really need to find some water potions and identify scrolls hopefully. But I believe I need to beat the Fire Tower first.

Also, Any advice on getting crowned(?) with my God? I was feeling spiritually invincible but I accidentally hit a Karma Lizard and felt like it was a bad idea. I offered like 2000 gold afterwards and feel spiritually invincible but don't know if I'm fixed yet or not. Also I have none of the Somafillia which isn't great of course. I was thinking maybe I should try something else and get crowned before I do the fire tower.

ANyways, thanks again everybody! I hope you have a good weekend!

JellySlayer

Yes, you can learn swimming. Give some blessed carrot juice to the Baby Water Dragon.

Platinum ring does help with fire resist. Use that instead of one of your fire resistance rings. If you have picked up fire resistance from a corpse (eg. fire beetle corpse), then you should be immune to damage with 1 ring + elemental gauntlets. You can always step inside and check. I think Rolf's Saviour may also give fire resist, actually. Your weapon isn't bad, but you could probably do better, I guess. Your weapon is about as strong as Big Punch, I think and you can certainly kill him with that. It's usually better to engage the Wyrm with missiles or spells though, but he's not that bad in melee. Especially with 48 PV. Have you been through Darkforge already? There's sometimes good weapons there. Don't waste time. Avoid fighting, find the stairs and ascend ASAP. Don't be afraid to use the Water Orb if you get in trouble as well (heals to full for a small amount of corruption). Try to attack the Temple from the center, so that you can avoid fighting most of the elementals in the outside rooms.

You need to reach "You feel close to your god" to fix the effect of hitting a karmic monster. Probably 10k more or so should do it. I'd strongly recommend doing this before attempting the Tower, as luck has a very big effect on how long your blankets will last. You can probably get crowned with ~50k more or so. You should be pretty close to that much money by this point unless you're a dark elf or orc or have been doing lots of Garth training. If you're short on cash, you can get enough very easily in the Casino. Casino can only be accessed after Fire Orb is obtained.

Hi Guys!

So I'm just stalled out for now with my weaponsmith cause for some reason I just have no gold and my only way to get it is to sell the Si a bunch of times I think.

SO I started a Chaos Knight. Or several! Cause they can have terrible corruptions like the rage aura that made the Terinyo shopkeeper attack me right off the bat!

Also, nobody talks to Chaos Knights except Hotzenplotz(?)? So I don't think I can do the healing quest which I've noticed is a big problem. And a lot of people seem to just be mean to me. Rat shopkeepers won't sell me stuff, the arena guy said he was going to fight me but he didn't, Thrundarr is being a jerk (Big surprise) and even the guys in the dwarf bar are being mean. So, what's the deal? If a Chaos knight was my first character and if this was the first time playing you can bet Chaos Knight would be my first character I'd have no idea what's going on or what to do. Not even the little girl liked me!

Anyways, I ended up getting poisoned and prayed to survive. I prayed to Andor Drakon? WHAT. He's evil. So yeah I quit that character right then cause what's going on there? I don't even know what my quest is with a Chaos Knight. SHouldn't I just hang out at the starting place in the World Map and kill any other heroes that show up? I mean that'd be best right?

So yeah I quit that guy cause what's the deal. I'm not a jerk like that.

Anyways, I'll give my weaponsmith a go some more once I feel like waiting around forever for more Sis to get rid of my bad luck. In the meantime though, Chaos Knights, what's their deal?

That's not very ambitious! How about going and sacrificing the trident of the red rooster to Andor Drakon, to ensure chaos rules Ancardia for eternity? :)

In the meantime though, Chaos Knights, what's their deal?

They are a very special class. Their motivations to enter the Drakalor Chain are way different. Most NPCs realize this and don't mind giving you a piece of their mind. Changing alignment is possible, but also really hard and has downsides of its own.

On the upside, generating CKs with PV and stats well over 30 is very possible, and has the early-game advantages you'd expect. Four starting corruptions also means you might have very useful effects (like water breathing, or acid immunity/spit) from the get go, too.

Thanks for the tips guys! I guess maybe a Chaos Knight isn't my thing. I read the manual but I'm still not sure what my motivations are. Also, I don't want to talk too much about it cause I don't want to spoil the ending for anybody!

Also, What is the Trident of the Red Rooster?

JellySlayer

Chaos Knights are an evil class. They play very differently from other classes and are pretty tricky for new players. In one of the newer versions, you can get Healing by the chaotic route. Maybe pre22?

On the plus side, they are absolute beasts with a powerful weapon and 20+ PV typical. Even if you can't get healing, it's not a big deal.

The longer you're asking that question, the more mysterious the world of ADOM will be. I'd encourage you NOT to just google for the answer. I wish I hadn't found the answer online!

Well!

Just tried out an Orc Ranger. Very nice Skills! But the game went all Bipolar on me! So, I managed to get the Blanket from the small cave, even though I had to fight through it. I made it in and back out just fine. Then I go to the Bandit town and find out what a Scroll of Identify looks like and learn to pickpocket! I had a Beggar attack me so I gave him 40 gold but he kept attacking me! So I killed him, and alas, my gold was gone. :(

I go to the Puppy Cave and BAM! Right on level one, room one, I get a lawful Altar! Yay! I convert to Lawful right away. What's next? I go down and Oh no there's a pretty large size room just outside the stair room with ants in it! I try to fight but find out they are tough so I run away a different way. At the end of that different way I find a lawful alter.

Hmm. Yep, All I had to do was wait and I Offered the whole hive plus some other guys! I felt spiritually invincible and an inner strength uplifting my spirit!

I go down, and look for the puppy, but, it was too late. :( The puppy died.

Now the funny thing is on one of the levels - level 4 I think, the one just before the big cavern level I kept hearing zapping sounds or a Soul in Agony or something.

So yeah… I checked it out on my way back up.

Did you know Writhing Masses of Primal Chaos could slow you down? I didn't! So I run, and get smacked, and run and get smacked, etc.

Long story short I pray for healing 4 times and manage to get to the Alter on level 2. Along the way I picked up two corruptions - Teleporting and Unholy Aura.

And I don't get to pick where I teleport. :(

I tried. I checked out the Black druid, and went to the Caverns of Chaos instead of fighting him, but uncontrolled teleportation was just too much. Not fun.

The game dangled a Blink Dog in front of me on level one of the Caverns but with me teleporting and him teleporting I never got a chance to attack him or even find him after a bit, so there was no real hope.

SO in the end I gave up my Ranger. I think I will try another one before too long. I liked all those skills, there were so many I had to scroll down. Also, I was literate! Which I think is rare for an Orc.

One question I had though is, this Orc Ranger could see how many charges each wand had, but my Weaponsmith can't. What's up with that?

Thanks everyone!

sylph
05-12-2014, 09:37 AM
Being able to count is dependent on your learning score. :)

I actually quite like teleportation, even uncontrolled. It helps get you closer to your goal just as often as it takes you away from it! I'd persevere with the ranger - getting teleportation first is a dream come true for a lot of characters.
Unholy aura is bad news though, and needs removing before you get to dwarftown (I'd suggest going to the high mountain village, since you've already rolled low-level monsters in the small cave).

The good thing about early WMoPCs created by traps is that if you have spells or wands, they're killed really easily and give a good chunk of experience.

Hi Guys! So, I took my weapon smith who was on hold to the Fire Tower. I have the mana drain corruption, so I had to dig through the walls with my pickaxe to get to the temple.

Anyways, right as I got to the temple and the fire guys (Either Grues or Elementals, can't remember) showed up, my Blessed FireproofBlanket broke! So, I ran out of there and lost a lot of stuff on the way.

Now I don't have a ring of Ice or any useful wands cause of the corruption, or another Blanket! I've checked the Puppy Cave, the Healer Cave, and Small Mountain Cave, and the Forboding Dungeon, but can't find one!

Is there any way to do the Fire Temple without a Fireproof Blanket? I have mostly artifacts and Mithril gear, but I get hungry fast cause of it. Also, I'm not crowned which hurts. Won't all my food burn up on the way?

I'm really not sure what to do.

Thanks for any help in advance!

JellySlayer

If you've already dug in, you can do it with a bit of care.

As far as food goes, best thing to do is just eat a bunch so you're bloated right before you go in. Eat a blessed stomafilla or get bloated then drink a potion of potential/boost toughness. Don't waste time and you should be fine. Worse comes to worse, if your piety is decent you can pray for food once you are at Hungry!

You will probably need to rely heavily on the Water Orb or prayers for healing, since pretty much all other healing/regen items won't work.

sylph
05-16-2014, 08:55 PM
Fill your belly to bloated, sacrifice all your gold to get as close to your god as possible. Then run to the top level of the tower and have at the baddies there! Use the water orb to heal every time you get to <60% health (make susre you're wearing the elemental gauntlets). If you're lucky you'll be able to get some demon-slaying or dragon-slaying ammo up there without it setting on fire. If not, the snake is also very vulnerable to potions of cure corruption, potions of blindness, cursed potions of invisibility, rune covered trident, find weakness kiting etc.
You can safely wear rings of regeneration underneath those artifact gauntlets, and the rings won't burn, which can give you the passive healing you might need if you want to stairhop or something.
Even if you can't get any of those items up there, it's possible to do, with a lot of caution, with a level 20 PC provided you're willing to take on a few corruptions from his attacks and the water orb. It's not foolproof though, and if he gets a couple of lucky crits or goes berserk on you your character is toast.
