View Full Version : FINALLY got my orcish thief win!

I've been trying to get a win with an orcish thief for FAR too long (since about october last year), and I finally managed it today.
Most of my orc thief characters actually died to old age. This guy survived by using massive caution around ghosts, not drinking from any pools, and using the rune-covered trident against the ghosts lategame. The thing that really clinched it was (finally) realising how well thieves could learn spells! I hadn't realised they were so proficient at it! At about level 15-20 they can just go wild with books of magic missile and teleport. That was enough to have me wand to tackle the rift, whereupon (at about level 30) I learned lightning ball and used it to clear the bug temple!

Most notable things about the character were
- Finding a wand of wishing, and not having to use it (I used it for corruption removal at the end of the game, since I had already killed the druid for the shield of raw steel),
- Pickpocketing throughout the game - stole a lot of stat potions (including gain attributes), and lots of nice rings
- Wishing for 'rings of regeneration', 'concentration' and 'archery'
- Almost no limit to potions of booze. I used a *lot* of wands this game, my wand of fireballs was practically a standard attack, and I learned to respect wands of magic missiles, which I always used to just throw away.
- Slings - actually surprisingly useful throughout the mid game. Obviously they fall off in the lategame, but I found magic missiles, acid breath, and the rune covered trident are all that you really need for D:50 (although I had True Aim, and that sped things up a lot).

D:50 was actually horrendous, and I used about 9 potions of extra healing after having to fight ~8 greater earth elementals in the starting room! That, of course, was far more scary than anything on the left of the level! :D


It's about time I finally got this win. not sure what to go for next...

Were you able to sneak much, or did you mostly turn into some kind of crazy hand to hand bow shooting spell casting madman halfway through? I can't decide which would be cooler. >_>

Very nice, well played!

I would have been temped to learn smithing from Glod and smith some of that gear a bit - your crown and bracers could be +6/+6 each without even having to do a lot of mining - a few extra points on your dragonmail or girdle would have been sweet too. DV is your friend against ghosts.

Oh, I ran like hell whenever I saw one. I focused a LOT on speed (this is why I love the black torc, and why I don't like to give the gladius to bart (I did it in this game after I found a quicksilver quarterstaff in the blue dragon caves!). I find speed, when stacking the torc, the gladius, and rings/boots of speed, to be extremely powerful, especially combined with wands of digging and potions of booze!
On top of speed, I kind of forgot to mention in the post above, but I did a *lot* of sneaking! I levelled pick locks as my very first priority at the start of the game, and followed it up with stealth, first aid and backstabbing! I only remembered when I read your post, but I spent nearly half the game with this weird stealth setup, and was shocked at how well it worked! Even before I found a ring of invisibility, I was basically backstabbing about 75% of the strong monsters I encountered, and it's pretty much expected to one-hit-kill them with a thief backstab (this included 1-hitting many molochs with a blessed eternium spear).
It felt really weird to neglect find weakness for so long, but I found backstabbing + stealth to be a lot more useful for getting me through the early and mid game.

When I got my first ring of invisibility, I didn't dare wear it for a long time for fear of the food consumption, but eventually decided just to give it a go for a few dungeons (starting with the dragon vault in the frost giant caves), and realised just how little difference it makes! After that I spent the rest of the game permanently invisible, from one source or another. I have to admit, I've had *so* many games of adom where I drank from pools, got perma invisibility, but no wish, and felt dissapointed, but ended up a few Djinnis in thinking 'you know, this is better than a wish!'. I'm thinking maybe 'rings of invisility' might be a first-wish to try with a future character (although I really value 'rings of regeneration', despite how wasted it is later on!)

Overall I think the key to getting success with a thief is abusing door locking in the early game, using stealth and backstabbing to deal damage, and knowing when to transition to magic. As an orc or dark elf, you get find weakness, so can play like a fighting character a little longer before you start learning spells, but in the end their ability to learn spells so well seems one of the strongest things about this class. I mastered teleport with literacy at 35 and no crown of science!

It's kind of funny that it took me so long to win with a thief. I consider them one of my stronger classes now (because of how safe the starting lockpicks make the earlygame, and the spells for the lategame). I think it was a combination of rotten luck, changes with the new version (skeleton king, earth temple etc), and carelessness (from trying too many orc thiefs!). Either way, I'll miss pick locks SO much on my next few playthroughs.

Now try mist elven thief :). Have been trying to nail this one for a while and most of my chars die due to ..... fatal crashes. This is arguably one of the most difficult combos to win the game with.
