View Full Version : That One Dumb Thing (Or More Than One)

AKA: "I Should Know Better By Now."
AKA: "Why do I keep doing this to myself?!"
AKA: "*Again*? Dammit, I'll remember next time."
AKA: ... well, you get the picture.

You've died a zillion times from that one thing you 'always' do. And you *know* it's dumb, but for whatever reason, you either always forget, or you can't resist doing it. So here's your chance to come clean: what's the bad habit that *you* have that's the bane of your ADOM existence?

Here's the major ones I can think of:

- Going through the Dwarven Halls instead of the forest. Every. Single. Time.
- Trying to dive the small cave to the UD, no matter what level I happen to be after doing puppy cave, wilderness exploration, a dungeon quest if I'm feeling plucky, et cetera.
- Forgetting I have healing potions, or 'saving' them for an emergency (and of course dying badly because it was an emergency and I didn't think about it)
- Kicking down doors instead of seeing if I can avoid them first, until I have better HP/Knock/lock picking/whatever

This is not a bad habit, it's a good one.

I'm lazy and impatient so I use the walk commands a lot. Sometimes even when I should be carefully making each step so I can retreat at the sight of that vortex which has been making noise since I entered the level. I haven't died strictly from walking that many times, but I don't dare to count how many turns I wasted, how much extra corruption I gained simply from walking, also including when I walk in the wrong direction or press w5 more than necessary.

I also don't remember when I last went through the forest. Usually, by that point I have the wand of teleportation from the VDDL. If not, I have something else that helps me avoid trouble - wands of monster detection or digging and such things. As you may have guessed from paragraph 1, I don't have the patience for the forest either, and it's not like the forest is without threat - no instadeaths, but it does force weaker characters to use up healing potions.

Rapidly pressing the direction keys to go through a level I've already 'cleared', only to run into a cat ('Did I just lose the Ring of the Master Cat?!?'), a karmic lizard/dragon ('Oh great, now I'm cursed and doomed!'), a greater titan ...

"I'll try hitting this monster just one more time before I heal/escape".

A big second on this one! The amount of times I've died exactly because of this, WITH blessed potions of extra-healing in my backpack and prayers on hand ...

"I have a backpack full of potions of healing but I'm only at half health and he is almost dead - why waste one when I can just regen after the fight?"

"I still have a ~100 hp left, that wyrm doesn't hit that hard."
"I can slay this mimic in one turn, no need to set combat mode from berserk to normal."
"This berserker prince is not going to panic, I'll just hit it one more time."
"Nah I don't have to use missiles against this corpse fiend; they can get you sick but I will kill it right before that happens."
"Is that a normal doppelganger or a lord? It can't be a dopple king, they don't spawn this early in CoC."
"Wow that is a random dark green "(", it has to be an emerald dagger, not some mimic hivemind."
"That steel golem is critically wounded, it will drop dead the next turn, I don't need to heal yet."
"Wow that's a werewolf king. They can't be *much* stronger than werewolf lords, can they?"

Digging graves at a low level: "Emperor liches almost never happen! And besides what if I get an artifact?"
Exploring the small cave after gaining a few too many levels: "I'm sure the next room will have the stairs!"
Find a black altar on PC5: "Easy precrowning! I'll be really careful this time and not step on it..."

"Oh, it's a green l, a giant lizard, no problem, I can take it in melee!"

'You feel as though this was a bad idea!!!'

The moral is, the 'l' command is your best friend. USE IT FOR PITY'S SAKE.

Completionism.

Must must must rush to see the puppy at low levels so I have time to meet the raider lord later.

I got back to ADOM after a long break, so at the moment i often end up with something like:
- "Ok, i've found the downstairs in the SMC, just a few more turns to find the blanket and i'll be out."
- "Well, he's critically injured, why wasting this potion of ultra healing?"
- "Since up to now i've been running into an unusually high number of trapped doors, it's very unlikely for this one to be trapped too."

What's a werewolf king against my Vanquisher-armed barbarian?

"I'll make it this time!"
- Save the puppy compulsion in early game.

"So I had a Potion of Ultra Healing on this guy?"
- Loading a character not played for a while and dying because I forget the equipment I have - mostly potions/scrolls/herbs that could save me.

"Just one more sip..."
- Drinking from pools without preparation (Never ever got a wish this way, too...). Gets me doomed and poisoned every time.

"Just one more room..."
- Exploring DLs obviously too high for my level

And last but not least...
"I'm sure the blanket is right around the corner"
- Self explanatory...

Dying to acid-based monsters by just a few HP, when I had a ring of acid resistance in my inventory (not equipped)...

On a sidenote, it hurts when that equipment is an unidentified AoLS or weapon of devastation... happened to me more than once.

it doesn't matter how many times i read people getting their PCs killed in the SMC, how many times i think to myself "hmm the exit isn't in this room or the next and to continue i need to travel down this long long corridor, i should probably come back when i'm a little bit more prepared" i STILL go down the corridor and die. all the frickin time! ugh

screw you SMC!

Once you're deep enough, your chances of making it back are no better because of level 12 dark elven priestesses spawning behind you. Might as well push forward, where there are still lots of unkilled level 1 rats and kobolds. I think that it is often more foolish to backtrack than proceed forward into uncertainty in the SMC, taking into account the reward of milking the UD for all it's worth as well, unless you know where the down stairs are going to be and know that it's much farther.

Really, even with the weakest characters, even without teleporting or invisibility, I rarely get killed in the SMC when I cross it (around level 6).

I do that same thing...as if I thought it would disappear if I didn't get it back soon enough. But we must remember: If something takes it, kill it! And it won't get too far away!

I always cross the SMC at level 1, thus i try to rush for stairs and blanket before i hit lvl5 and either get out or, if the character is tough enough, dive to the HMV. To me, entering the SMC at lvl6 is way too risky, but i'm a real paranoid when it comes to things like these...if i happen to miss the staircase on the first visit, i don't get back until i have magic mapping or some other 'B' plan.
