View Full Version : My first real melee win (Trollish Healer).

Just had my fourth win in ADOM, and as it happened - my first real melee win. Though I did use slings and thrown rocks to banish things such as ochre jellies and karmic lizards, I didn't use any ranged combat to deal with any of the big bad bosses, but rather relied on melee power (and cursed PoI's). My first winner was a dedicated hurthling rockthrower (monk), my second was a drakish fighter (who did take down all the tough guys with slaying ammo) and my third was a spellcaster (gray elven druid). This was also the first time I tried smithing.

The first part of the game was easy. I was lucky enough to experience a "surge of power" while diving through the UD. The named ratling warlord dropped Hammerhead which I briefly used as a weapon, but the greatest use I found for it was that of aquiring gems and stone giant stew. This was nice as I had a very modest starting learning score of 3.

I did spend too much time building up (mining and smithing) this character, though. While I was standing sweaty in the Dwarftown smithy time just went flying by, and I discovered to my dread that the 90 day mark was approaching. But having spent little time scumming for items and pacified the large room early I found that the best weapon I had at the moment was a rather unimpressive adamantium spear. But then, as I was going over to Waldenbrook to sell some si's I discovered that he had re-stocked, and among the the new items were the weapon I was going to use from then on: a short sword of penetration.

I bought it, smithed it up to reasonable levels, blessed it and headed for the ToEF (at character level 15). The Tower was a piece of cake, as I mercilessly hacked anything that came in my way apart. ACW was blinded and despatched very quickly and rather effortlessly. Clearing ToEF nettet me with three levels worth of XP.

I then went to DF just to find nothing of use in the stashes, losing TP control and becoming cursed and doomed. I went back to Dwarftown, removed the intrinsics, got back to DF and finally got a wish for an AoLS.

Then I commenced with the final dive. I got crowned lawful in Dwarftown for lightning immunity and SHITzestriakis (worst arty ever).
I snatched the water, air and earth orbs while only bothering to completely clear out The Stone Temple. Cat lord was blinded, webbed and left behind as I dove like a madman (the time-limit had just expired when I descended into the CoC for the final time).

I skipped the Blue Dragon Caves and continued down to the Mana Temple. Casted up all of my PP on invisibility before digging my way into the trapped corridors. Invisibility was of great help as I only bothered slaying the servants. Then, out of nowhere comes the owner of the estate who obviously didn't take kindly at all to my attempted burglary; the profanities he uttered broke my will and completely shattered my self-confidence. I retaliated by throwing a beer bottle in his face, impairing his sight while I repeatedly stabbed him in the guts until he gave up his wallet.

I got out of there quickly and proceeded to D:49 where I threw my potion of uselessnes just to receive... Whirlwind! Boy was I disappointed...

On D: 50 I read my scroll of vermin control, used my RoDS for wands of destruction and then proceeded to mop of the foul dwellers of the plane. All in all it went smoothly enough, but I didn't bother clearing the whole level (kinda regret I didn't smash a bottle in the face of Fista, though). Handled the levers, destroyed them, and the tele'd out of there. On my way back up I finish the Furry lord off and get chased by the EG for a while.

On my way back home while stopping by Terinyo for some beef-jerky, I had a chat with the groundskeeper who wanted me to check up on his beautiful white stallion. The stallion wanted me to kill this other horse, so off to to his pen I went. I found the dark, skinny pony quietly grazing. I snuck up on him, threw a bottle in his face and then proceeded to chase him around the pen until I finally caught up with him and dismembered him. Went back for my reward, and was back home for supper.

Thoughts in this game:

1. Smithing is boooring.

2. The troll ability to sacrifice rocks is simply useless. I sacced a heap of over 800 and it got me to "very pleased".

3. High level trollish healers with the quick healing corruption and an amulet of rapid healing recover HP very quickly.

4. It's possible to go pure melee!

As a child you had to survive pretty harsh times since your parents
seemed to have run out of luck. Their wealth was ever-declining and times
were very hard.
During your youth you had a lot of fun playing with other kids of
your age. You always were a natural leader and the center of interest.
As a young adult you spent a lot of time searching for a deeper
meaning and purpose in your life. You pondered and pondered but nothing
truly sparked your interest. Finally, after many many hours, you made a
decision.

Excellent Job! I came really close to a pure melee win myself about two months back(it would have been my third win), as a Drakling Fighter. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring something to warm myself back up on D:50. After spending 200 turns trying to find a workaround, I came to a fustrating realization; I could either wait for myself to become corrupted beyond all recognition, or suicide myself upon the writhing masses of primal chaos that were spawning faster then I could kill them.

Drakish Fighter is a murderous combo, what a sad ending to your tale.
Almost every time I've entered D:50 I've had a scroll of vermin control, and they help tremendously.
Did you also throw bottles with your char?

I think sacrificing anything but monsters, food, or gold is useless. I've never gotten much piety from magic wands, rings, or tools when playing the appropriate races.

Special case which does of course agree: Hurthlings, cooked corpses, summoners.

Yeah, this is the first time I bothered with anything else than si's, stoma or gold. Dwarves have the best saccing discount IMO.
