I am thoroughly concerned about the how of not losing this character.

Basics - L17 Beastfighter, Saved Khel from a lucky wish in a random dungeon, Done the 6 quests, Liberated Griff's soul, Killed Rheptap. I'm yet to ROHK or Temple. Important bits from the VLG are in the follow up post. I note that I've still got the Chaos Healing scrolls from Khel.

I've found myself with 7-9 wishes - I had a 4 cast wand of wishing already stored in the ogre dungeon, and just found another 3 cast wand of wishing.

For the record, I'm just going after a regular victory. After 12 or so years of on and off play, I've never had one. I'm not going to risk any special victory even if my wishes and state makes me a textbook candidate.

I think I will save a wish for wands of destruction to finish the final level. I was also thinking scrolls of familiar summoning, again to help with the final level. Beyond that - I'm really not sure. I would suspect that rings of ice or red dragon scale mail might be helpful for the ToEF.

Anybody got any ideas of how to use these wishes to optimize my chance of winning?

What race are you, an orc?

The first thing you should do is to get crowned as soon as possible. All crowning gifts that a beastfighter can get are great. Nothing else improves your survivability more.
Since you have a large surplus of wishes, you might as well burn one or two of them on gold, in order to get crowned right now.

The second thing you should do is getting rid of the "very light" corruption. Strength and toughness are your most important attributes as a beastfighter, so a -6 penalty on both is terrible. Since you already saved Kelly, this should be easy without burning a wish.

Next, it depends on what your crowning gift was. If it wasn't preserver or BoW, I'd wish for at least 1 source of regeneration. Bracers, for example. RDSM is another nice wish, but not if you have already received =Fire or Nature's companion from crowning.

Then replace the girdle of carrying with a girdle of giant strength and bless it, to improve its durability.

Another great thing to wish for is wands of paralyzation. It trivializes many fights.

It is also possible to wish for arrows or quarrels of foo slaying.

Yup - I'm an Orc. I'm currently extremely close, so that should be doable.

:/ I assume you removed the corruption now? Anyway, bracers of war, that's great, maybe the best. What immunity did you get?

Since you're an orc, you could consider wishing for potions of longevity so that the first hit from a ghost king doesn't kill you.

PS don't forget you can wrench a final charge from wands of wishing.

Yeah - I did, and yeah - I may. In my attempt to go C- (which eventually resulted from luring dwarves downstairs) I dug a grave... and unearthed a master lich who promptly summoned 4 ghost lords who are awaiting in the graveyard of the Caverns of Chaos. I want some ammo - which I'll hopefully find somewhere above to hopefully get rid of them from a distance.

I got the (at this point very fortunate) Fire Immunity. I had the Mummy Wrapping on when I was crowned.

I also used a wish on the Girdle of giant strength. If I put the Girdle, the rings, the bow, the boots and the pick in my backpack, I'll be wearing exclusively fireproof stuff. The backpack has a couple of fireproof blankets in it. I have a ring of fire resistance that I can use as well. Hopefully, almost ready for the ToEF.

Rings never burn as long as they are under gauntlets. The girdle is made out of iron IIRC. If you bless it, it probably won't burn. I would wear it in the tower. The extra damage output is worth it. Bows and boots burn away easily, yeah.

Have you done the water temple yet? I always do that before the tower. The water orb is very good to have in the tower, because +10 willpower helps you to resist the confusion attacks of the wyrm. And emergency heals are great to have.


I have a ring of fire resistance that I can use as well.
Better to use a ring of damage, you're already fire immune.

Definitely potions of longevity! And save a couple of wishes for more SoCR - as a melee character and crowned C- you'll get corrupted quite fast and although it might not be life-threatening, being able to control what you keep and what you lose is pretty powerful.

Personally I'm always a bit surprised at people wishing for GoGS, they never last long in my hands and always get destroyed fairly soon after I find them.

Hmm, speed is also always good and +20 is hard to come by. Wishes for potions of toughness and potions of strength would be something I'd consider.

The minotaur maze will help too if you can be bothered and have a decent missile weapon. Train up thrown axes :)

Speed on a beastfighter, especially at the cost of St, is a huge detriment. Beastfighters were hit pretty significantly by the xp nerfs already (unless you wish for EM), no need to make the problem worse.

Ah, I see. Generally I'd rather have the speed than xp but for a beastfighter I'd agree that you want levels.

I must say that beasties are on my to-play list: I had a quick go a while back and it seemed pretty fun, but I don't have much experience with them.

i cant believe no1 said this but....seven league boots are a massive upgrade to your inventory so wish for them. also bless them. ofcourse you could wish for potions of longevity or youth but much better would be alchemy which can provide you with these recipes at decent levels. other than that rdsm, =oice come to mind.. i wouldnt wish for any stat potions i feel they are a waste..but its your call. also mayb wish for spellbooks of slow monster, equip the crown of science and read them ...it is easily the most potent spell in the whole game which can make nuuragwan, asb, acw 'speed' down to 50ms or something stupid like that...best of luck and keep us updated!

My favourite wishes are rings of regeneration and rings of invisibility (in that order). Despite being relatively common items that you can expect to find in or before the casino in 4/5 games, they're easily enough for me to feel confident finishing the game with. I can't think of another wishable item that I expect to carry me to the end of the game, probably because the goods ones all get destroyed, whereas these rings are invulnerable if you wear artifact gauntlets (which as we know are gauranteed).

I think a ring of invisibility is more powerful for general dungeon diving, but weaker against special levels, and having more than 1 is pointless. Regeneration, on the other hand, still somewhat trivialises normal levels, eases most boss fights dramatically, and having 2 is double the fun!

In fact, were I to find myself with 7 wishes, I'd probably use 1 with on rings of regeneration, and save the other 6 for either scrolls of chaos resistance, slaying ammo, or other specialist items as and when I needed them. I've wished for 'torches' on D:50 before, ADOM can be like that. ;)

7 league boots are mostly redundant on a beastfighter unless you plan to walk around wilderness a lot. Wishing for Alchemy is not very good IMHO, as it will take forever to train (especially if longevity/youth potions are somewhere around the end of the list).

Rings of regen are not that hot when you have BoW.

If I were you, I'd consider checking the ice queen vault for the artifacts before heading towards the ToEF. Clearing a GV with your current level/gear is probably a bad idea, but nabbing some decent things should be reasonable.
Also, with that negligible Willpower you absolutely need the Water Orb for the ACW or you can spend one wish for potions of potential willpower and train with morgia.
