View Full Version : (Mad) Alchemist

Yet another weird challenge game completed... This time only attacks used were (thrown) potions, offensive alchemy and traps. No pets were used.

Main problems in this challenge are getting enough hp/fire resistance and herbs to start using alchemy, how to avoid/kill fire creatures (by using traps/poison) and of course getting fire orb and mana orb from guardians that are immune to fire. Also a lot of loot gets destroyed due to fire.

I chose to be a gnomish assassin because assassin has easy access to poison and gnome gets extra talent and ventriloquism which turned out to be a lot more useful than I have ever thought. Before this successfull attempt I had tried mainly some hurthling/gnome wizard/necro combos to start with a ring of fire resistance to start alching like mad earlier (with hardy + very hardy).

At start I scummed a lot in ID to find some potions (can be exploded in emergency when I have enough hp to survive from it), gold (for disarm traps and to buy fireproof blanket) and some door traps (to kill monsters for a few xp).

It took awfully long to scum for ring(s) of fire resistance and before I got those I had enough gold to buy disarm traps. With disarm traps I could get some safe xp and a few levels from assassin's guild from teleportation traps. After leveling up a bit I had to continue ID scumming but eventually I got two rings of fire resistance and could start using alchemy.

4th level in puppy cave had some very nice herb farms that was my main supply of herbs for stat training, food, healing, precrowning/crowning and of course for some big booms.

Keethrax is immune to fire and I couldn't harm him quickly enough with poison alone but luckily I had some friendly(?) giant slugs there that helped me to destroy my inventory and kill Keethrax for me.

At this point the game started to get a bit more straightforward except that my fireproof blanket burnt away quite quickly. To continue without insane item destruction I had to drop all my stuff and pick only some herbs when I wanted to attack monsters.

Dwarven graveyard and pyramid were both done without rings of ice or fireproof blankets and without fire immunity (or even natural fire resistance). Soon after doing these I dipped rings in potion of exchange and got 2 rings of ice, the best item I could get (after RoDS of course), which allowed me to start using alchemy like mad.

Khelly were killed (no AoLS or a single wish were found during the whole game) but obviously graveyard and water temple both were really easy to clear.

Also fire temple were easier than I thought it would be. I used invisibility to sneak past 3 first levels and inside to the temple. By killing some chaos servants first and then throwing a potion at fire drake, I managed to lure ACW out with no trouble. Killing him was a bit trickier though but eventually potions of poison, ventriloquism and potion of cure corruption did the job (should have used that PoCC first though, now I didn't get any xp from killing him).

Getting the ring of the high kings was pretty tricky as I didn't have any means to build (ice) bridges but killing people in UC:5 gave me an ogre magus fairly quickly that could be used to freeze a bridge for me.

Earth and air temple both were easy and srraxxarrakex went down pretty fast as well.

Clearing mana temple turned out to be quite a lot harder than I thought. Without confusion resistance Nuurag-Vaarn could confuse me several times (even I had 50+ willpower) and meanwhile annihilators destroyed some pretty useful stuff and chaos wizards kept summoning (greater) chaos servants like mad. All prayers during the game were used to remove confusion there. Killing the Nuurag-Vaarn took a PoCC and dozens of potions of poison and a lot of time. With ventriloquism I could keep him confused all the time and eventually poison killed him.

At level 33 I was ready for the final dive. D:48 and 49 were both simple and in D:50 clearing the way to the lever rooms were easy. Main problem there were balors who are immune to fire and who can teleport... and it gets even harder when they summon some greater fire elementals and diamond golems. With a few attempts I could finally close the gate by trapping a monster on both levers and escaping quickly before balors could go reopen it.

Very impressive. Was it harder than the shield challenge?
Can't believe you actually pulled these ones off, did you sell your soul for ADOM skill?

Shield challenge was way easier and less tedious than this one. Actually it was one of the easiest challenges I have tried.

Very impressive! Wasn't sure it would be possible from the problems starting out, but you evidently pulled through very well. Pity the balors couldn't be wiped out though (potions of exchange maybe?) Surprised you have such trouble in the Mana Temple - with some Wi boosting potions it should be a doddle to fry through the mobs quickly.

I had only 2 potions of boost willpower and I used one of them in mana temple for bigger fire balls. The main problem there were total lack of confusion resistance (didn't have any items that grants it and even casino didn't have any).
It didn't even come in my mind that I could use potions of exchange to take out balors, but maybe that won't help much anyway as potions of exchange are a bit too rare to take out all of them.

Should the potions of exchange work on all monsters? Yesterday I threw one on titan, but nothing happened. They don't seem to work on titans, at least.
