I was interested in testing some of the different difficulty settings in r52, so I ran a game on Monsters: Easy, Corruption: Off. My goal was to win without items (almost). I allowed myself the use of beeswax, climbing sets, and could carry the RoTHK and the orbs (but not equip them). Other than that, nothing in the inventory. My PC is a Dwarf Monk, for the extra PV from mithril skin.

So far, I've cleared several major hurdles. I have completed the CoC down to the wall of flames, including getting the Water Orb. The snake was a bit tricky, but I found that since he doesn't follow you up the stairs, I could hit him a couple times then retreat up to heal. I've cleared most of the R:- dungeons, and grabbed the RoTHK. Main problem was just getting to it... I was eventually able to freeze the lake with the help of an ice lizard. Surprisingly, I was able to clear Darkforge. Based on monster memory, steel golems have 6 DV, 28 PV and 126 HP in this mode. Their default stats are [8,35] 180 HP, so I'm guessing this means easy mode monsters have 30% less HP, 4/5 of their normal PV and somewhere around 3/4 of their normal DV. The maximum critical hit damage, on 10 PV + ITP was about 60, so I think monster melee damage is about half.

ToEF is probably next on the agenda. I wouldn't mind attempting the Maze for the emperor corpse, though the food situation there is a bit dicey since I can't carry any.

I've got very luck with intrinsics this game. I picked up -Para, -Stun, -Cold, -Death, and -Fire from a single pool in Darkforge (and promptly stopped at that). There was a blink dog corpse on the Banshee level, and I apparently got -SeeI from a statue. Another pool earlier in the game gave permanent invis, which has been a huge help.

I usually also stop once I get -para from a pool.
Permanent invis is indeed extremely helpful in a game like this.
You mentioned food is a problem, does "itemless" involve not carrying any food with you and only eating what you find?
Does corruption off mean that corrupting monsters, traps and corrupting pool sips have no effect?
What about eating corrupting corpses?
EDIT: I wonder, since you only have one -fire, though the intrinsic counts for two, is it feasible to use the water orb in the tower for healing continuously?
With corruption off it would be reasonable that its use doesn't corrupt you either.

I eat food off the ground. With a monk's low food consumption, this is generally enough to keep me alive. I think I had to pray for food once.

I haven't tested in detail whether or not I can get corrupted from traps, monsters, etc. Monsters still give the "you are corrupted" message when they hit me, FWIW. I have a suspicion it may only be background corruption that is turned off. I'll test this at some point.

I won't be using the powers of the Water Orb or any of the other orbs I collect. Just carry them. I'll be relying on -Fire, ITP, and prayers to survive the Tower.

Should be trivial to test, no?

Hit "show corruption" and see whether it says "Not yet corrupted" or "not yet THAT corrupted"?

wow nice.....hope you succeed! -deth was critical for nuuragwaan. -fire was useful for toef, -para is good overall, itp is good thinking. monk for unarmed is good but instead of dwarf you could have taken orc? also what about digging?
ok monk =free digging so scratch that!

Orc doesn't really have any particular benefits for monk. Monks already have Find Weakness, and the slightly higher St and To you get from an orc doesn't offset the loss of Wi. You need at least 15 Wi for ITP, which is a fairly high roll for an orc, and Wi is the only defense I have against confusion. There's also the lifespan thing. Killing ghost lords in melee with 9 PV is going to invariably lead to some aging issues.

Drakeling seems like it should be the obvious choice since they have a natural ranged attack. I don't know if it's possible to survive the extra damage in the ToEF though. I can build up piety, but not particularly efficiently (only livesac, and perma invis slows down the process).

Mist elf is kind of interesting. I dunno if it's possible to get up to 15 To using athletics boosts (I'm guessing not), so not being able to get ITP may make it impossible. OTOH, taking only 1/4 of base damage doesn't sound too bad. Interesting to see if the ACW bolts have reduced damage too.

@Harwin, yes, I can apparently get corrupted. It's only background corruption that has been removed.

Sounds like easy mode nerfs the game a bit too much...

Died. Had a good run of it though. ACW was not so bad as expected. I pulled him back to the stairs so I could retreat and heal when needed, and between that and a couple prayers to remove confusion, was able to drop him. Ended up picking up two corruptions from his melee attacks: Misty eyes and thorns. The extra damage from thorns was great; the loss of Pe from mist basically blinded me.

Dove down through the CoC. Cleared Wall of Flame easily enough. Got super lucky with a statue, which apparently removes a skill and adds a new one--ended up with Tactics at 100 in exchange for smithing! Better than a wish. Had a few nasty fights, diamond golem, that sort of thing. Got stat drained by specters a couple times which was kind of annoying. Cat lord level was really bad. The start of the level had a moloch which I avoided, but the entry of the level was basically a long corridor all the way along the top, then down the right side, with no other passages. The cat lord was in this corridor. At first I tried to flee, but got pinned between the moloch and the cat lord. Used all my prayers, but managed to dig my way around and run for the stairs down. I tried to melee the cat lord a bit hoping he'd flee, but only got him to moderate before I ran out. Fortunately, I was sometimes faster than him (I don't really understand how his speed works... sometimes I could gain two squares on him, then he'd close the distance the next turn). Managed to get down to D:36, which was a cavernous level with a river cutting through it. My HP was at around 50 when I descended, and I was constantly being harassed so I was never able to regain enough HP to be able to make the crossing. Might have to think about maybe taking a swimmer for this. Eventually a berserker king killed me.

I do think this challenge might just be possible with a bit of luck. Archmage will probably be very bad though. D:50 should be possible using the switch monsters trick, I think, so that's the main remaining hurdle.

Ancient Domains Of Mystery
Release 52

Have to say, for not having any items, I ended up with a damn nice set of intrinsics. This character was freakishly lucky with pools. And statues, actually.

So is easy mode so easy that it's possible to survive between cat lord and a moloch for a couple of turns?

With liberal use of prayers, yes.

ofc hindsight is 20/20 but you could have ascended with the moloch and left him at the top level and then 1v1 with the cat lord and left him with a bit of luck with the speed and shit. also i think you wudve raped archmage for sure with your character. neways good try but do try again...i want to see this sort of character win!!
