So Biskup has posted has posted a list of suggested achievements which can be seen if you scroll down at http://www.ancientdomainsofmystery.com/2014/11/achievement-design-in-adom.html#more

If I counted correctly there are 68 achievements + 3 Achiever achievements (40%, 80% and 100%, so for now the requirements would be at 27/68, 54/68 and 68/68 completed achievements).

We might not remember all the achievements here because we never kept that much track (e.g. I'm not sure if I've ever actually saved the puppy), so if you've forgotten, then it's probably best to count it as uncompleted.

I've completed 30/68, making me an Achiever :)

What about you? Anybody already at 100%? I doubt there are too many people in the world who have completed all the elements men challeges.

Here's my list too if anybody is interested (edited to include sacrificial fodder which I forgot I'd done on a failed ultra run):

Mad Carpenter No More
Find a way to cure Yrrigs. (-CPA)

Blanket Run
Enter the SMC at level 1 and take the blanket

Champion of the Arena
As the name says

Soul Saver
Free Griff's Soul

Just in Time
Save Khelavaster

Egyptologist
Kill Rehetep

Bookworm
Get the Weird Tome

Theseus
Get the Minotaur Axe

Master of Water
Obtain the Water Orb

Master of Fire
Obtain the Fire Orb

Master of Earth
Obtain the Earth Orb

Master of Air
Obtain the Air Orb

Master of Mana
Obtain the Mana Orb

Sacrifical fodder
Dealt with Demented ratling.

Yep, All Done!
Leave the Drakalor Chain after having closed the gate.

...And Throw Away The Key
Close the Chaos gate.

Scorer
Score 10 million points.

Beloved by Fate
win the game with a character obtained by letting fate decide

Dragonslayer
Slay a dragon. Easy, right?

Assassin's Deed
Kill an enemy with poison.

Deep Dive
Reach level 50 of the ID

Martial Arts Adept
Get level 5 on unarmed fighting

Lucky sip
Get a wish from a pool

Scholar
gain the literacy skill during a game

It Starts Easy
Die your first death. (get accustomed to dying and feel at least a little rewarded ;-) )

What's this?
Find a si.

Attonement
Recover from being doomed.

Fortune's Favor
Have Fate smile upon you.

Animal tamer
Tame an animal with food or with music

Shoplifter
Successfully rob a shop

It looks like I have about 53. I may have a few more... don't know what my highest score is or whether I ever reached I:100 for example. Between 53-57.

I have no clue really. I wonder how this one is ever going to be triggered though:

Supreme Achiever
Collect all achievements.

I guess it will remain open forever. Would be a good practical joke on achievement players! I suppose mr. Biskup means 'all other achievements' though :(

My count says I'm missing 16 achievements (not counting achievers) bringing me to 55/71.

A couple of turned down achievements were pretty awesome, especially compared to some on this list (mix a PoGA, really?). The problem with his list is that it's not balanced - pretty much 80% of it is basic stuff.

edit: actually, I might be wrong, maybe this is how it's supposed to be. It's just that all *Man achievements are fiendishly grindy. Also, is Eternium even possible with nerfed summoned drops/pick pockets?

Also, 10k turns win is IMHO impossible with current Teleport costs.

How many achievements are there on the list for you that you're interested in doing and haven't done yet? For me, that would be breaking the 20k turn limit and maybe try to get the nihilist ending.

We should think of some more interesting achievements that are harder than basic, but not super grindy like steel / eternium man / deep ID dive..

Yeah I didn't count Achiever, Overachiever and Supreme Achiever as I felt these need to stand separately and not count themselves when calculating percentages.

And as Biskup said, the list is preliminary, and I do agree that it needs some changing up. Some of the stuff on it is trivial or boring and some cool stuff is missing that I think should be on it. For example something related to Blup's mom, like killing her, since it can be problematic and is completely optional.

I'm also confused about "Things Were Better Back Then --- Restore a character from permadeath." I didn't count it for myself, because there are a number of ways I can see it being interpreted and I don't know which it is.

Killing Blup's mom is a good one, yeah. And I agree about the 10k limit, it's impossible without cheap teleport.

Pretty sure this means to resurrect yourself with either aols or necro power.

If it's aols/necro resurrection, then I've completed it, but I feel like it might not be since the term 'restore' in adom seems to mostly refer to loading a saved game as in 'restore an old game'.

There are some valid points in the post discussion on the blog.

Ben's suggestion about achievements that highlight class strengths (like Smithing) are pretty good for the purpose of teaching people to use them (again, his idea).

Here's the ones I'd remove from the original list:

3. Stick them with the pointy end! --- Dual-wield Needle and Sting. (that's kinda "just do it" instead of applying common sense/cookie message logic for a feeling of discovery)
4. Blanket Run --- Enter the SMC at level 1 and take the blanket (not really that exciting)
21. Treehugger --- Went through Living Forest not attacking any trees. (really?)
23. Yep, All Done! --- Leave the Drakalor Chain after having closed the gate. (this is really pointless, otherwise you can only die)
30. Speed Demon --- Complete the game within 10000 turns. (it's way over the top)
31. Scorer --- Score 10 million points. (feels completely useless with 100+ score for an UCG)
32. High Scorer --- Score 25 million points. (feels completely useless with 100+ score for an UCG)
33. Scoring Monster --- Score 50 million points. (feels completely useless with 100+ score for an UCG)
36. The White Eagle --- Become an avatar of Order. (already have an Ultra, no need for these)
37. The Grey Hawk --- Become an avatar of Balance. (already have an Ultra, no need for these)
38. The Black Vulture --- Become an avatar of Chaos. (already have an Ultra, no need for these)
47. Deep Dive --- Reach level 50 of the ID (already require in the OCG)
48. Very Deep Dive --- Reach level 100 of the ID (this is just pointless)
50. Plutonium Man --- Complete the game after having killed every type of monster in the game, except the mutually exclusive ones. (I like Head Hunter (only 1 of each mobs), but this one is just get 10 wishes for some shit like ki-rins)
53. Martial Arts Adept --- Get level 5 on unarmed fighting (what's up with unarmed?)
54. Kung Fu Master --- Get grand mastery on unarmed fighting (what's up with unarmed?)
56. Ocean's Eleven --- Successfully rob the Casino shop (I don't think this is really that exciting)
57. Nature hater --- win without using herbs (that is verging on the edge of "spoily" and the old argument of how herbs are game-breaking)
60. Consistent believer --- win without ever changing alignment (I don't think this is really that exciting)
62. Scholar --- gain the literacy skill during a game (why Literacy of all things?)
66. Attonement --- Recover from being doomed. (every Dfg pool-sip galore is like 5 of this achievement)
67. Fortune's Favor --- Have Fate smile upon you. (meh)
70. Battle alchemist --- Killed monster with alchemical fireball. (too complicated without the real sense of uniqueness)
71. Master alchemist --- Mixed !oGA. (not exciting)

Actually, thinking about this list I'm surprised I don;t see the following:

/
1. get crowned (receive a gift)
2. get to level 50 (best of the best)
3. complete ice queen quests (Ice champion)
4. complete Thrundarr's quest (Friend of the dwarves)
5. kill Ssraxx (what was his name again?)
6. kill Sharad (the enemy of my enemy is my loot)
7. receive RCT (Reunited a family!)
8. kill Blup's mom _and_ Blup (Allergic to water.)
9. kill the ice queen and get rewards from the diplomat (I don't really like winter.)
10. retrieve the phial (some LoTR reference)
11. get SoRS and AoRS (man of raw steel)
12. get grandmastery (the ace) duelists and CKs don't count
13. mix a potion, smith an item, fletch arrows, write a scroll (jack of all trades) - come on, this one is a classic
14. complete both Tywat's quests (I am the law)
15. equip an auto-cursing item (get it off!)
16. complete Yrriur's quest and use the reward (cleanse your soul)

I believe at some point I went out of "let's cover existing quests" into some "this is fun" territory, but I strongly believe every quest at least should have an achievement.

EDIT: took me so much time for this post that you've already covered some things I added! :D Jeez, you're a bunch of cold-hearted monsters after a baby dragon's mom (not that I'm any different).

About speed runs, how about an achievement for a fast ultra? Not sure what turn count would be appropriate (40-50k?)

Another obvious candidate I'm missing is killing the quickling royalty.

I agree with many of your suggestions for removing achievements, Ln, but I think you're a little too critical and some achievements could use a rework, not a complete scrap. I also agree with the principle that most unique quests should be rewarded with an achievement.

Needle/Sting should def stay imo, because Sting is totally optional and this achievement is just great. They're bro daggers. Getting them is an achievement. Ocean's Eleven and Blanket Run are both solid, but might need reworking when compared to Shoplifter and Full Blanket Run to remove redundancy. For example make Shoplifter activate when you steal from like 5 shops. And maybe Blanket Run could be replaced with Smother Kranach, which is blanket run + kill Kranach so with a mandatory return to wilderness it'd be the opposite of the Full Blanket Run.

Scoring's pretty much a must-have achievement flavor-wise, the numbers just need to be reworked. Maybe like 1M, 25M and 150M. They'd each need to have a purpose other than just "I finished this ending so these extra achievements came with". 1M means you haven't won, but it signifies that you've gotten quite far in the game. 25M is not something you'll get with any win, so it signifies an ordinary ending, but an above-average one at that. 150M is not something you get with any ultra, so this'd signify a truly exceptional game. Or something like that, I personally haven't won enough to fine-tune these numbers.

Deep Dive should stay too in some form. Just because a deep dive is a requirement for the OCG, doesn't mean that Deep Dive is redundant. Achievements can't be rewards just for the end-product, there need to also be achievements in the middle signifying how far you've gotten along that path (likewise Kill Filk is an ok achievement, even though it's also an ultra requirement). Also, deep dives are not restricted to the OCG, for example I once went for MaLaKaI because I needed exp (that was a bad idea btw). I do agree that Very Deep Dive is unnecessary and genuinely grindy since there's nothing there.

Some more achievements I'd like to suggest for thought (ignore the silly names):

1) You Shall Not Pass. Murder Fistanarius. There's a ton of ways to spare him and still win, so this is a nice add imo.

2) Curiosity Didn't Kill the Cat. Explore every tile of the Dwarven Halls without using Mapic Map, successfully exit downstairs.

3) Some Men Just Wanna Watch the World Burn. Burn down both Terinyo and Lawenilothehl. That means murder at least all the named characters + a certain number of creeps or something. Alternatively if this seems excessive, then something else that entails killing both the lawful and the chaotic of something (like the unicorns). I just think it's a flavorful theme for an achievement.

Biskup said that a suggested achievement of "Burn down Terinyo" was distracting, but I still believe in this achievement. I think it is both thematically consistent with a certain type of playthrough (extremely chaotic) and unique enough within that playthrough to hit that sweet spot of balance where an achievement needs to be.

4) Ye Might Have Peace. Kill an orb guardian with a Potion of Cure Corruption. Possible variants: 1) any damage dealt is enough for achievement, kill not necessary; 2) last hit with PoCC is needed for achievement, previous damage irrelevant (my fav); 3) all damage must be dealt with PoCC's. Alternatively it could apply to all bosses, not just guardians, to make it a little easier.

5) Darn Bugs. Clear one ant hive, one beehive and the bug temple.

47/71 it seems. Though I can't remember for sure the highest EXP I've ended, but I'm guessing less than 25M.

lol yeah the only reasoning there is that Fistanarius is basically a balrog. In all other ways that name makes no sense, because Fistanarius doesn't wanna go anywhere and he isn't really stopping you from going either.

I think you guys are, as often, biased by your expertise.

How much time were you playing ADOM before you could successfully do blanket runs or rob the Casino shop? Or get to DT without using any scrolls/books and completing the quest to get literate? In my case, weeks or maybe months in the first case, months or probably years in the second, and definitely years in the third (playing unspoiled, but hey, that's how you should play the game - if not, I'd say it's your way of playing that is not exciting, not the achievements).

Here in the forum we are a bunch of hardcore players but most of the new players that come through Steam aren't going to be like that, maybe only 10% will manage to finish the game and many won't even hit Dwarftown. There must be basic achievements so that you give most players motivation in their learning of the game. A couple of days ago I tried Age of Wonders III for the first time and in the first two hours of play I unlocked 8 achievements, I could say the same of many games, it's the standard thing: have some easy achievements to motivabe novices, and then go up all the way to the almost-impossible achievements for the pros.

Honestly I often criticise stuff in the game (precrowning!) but in this case I think TB has nailed it. Of course the list of achievements can see minor adjustments, nothing is perfect, but the general suggestions for changing the difficulty balance or removing certain kinds of achievements are for the worse IMO. The current list has a list of achievements that is varied, has something for every kind of player (even a couple of achievements for grinders, which I don't like but hey, they'll have to give them something to do too), and a good mix of difficulties.

I agree that it's good to have a lot of achievements for newer players, like 'gain literacy'. I just think there is too much of a gap in between the easy achievements and the achievements that border on impossible. There are not enough fun achievements in the list when you have already done a normal victory and an ultra. Eternium man is probably impossible without scripting. Steel man is as much fun as tearing down a wall of concrete with your nails. Personally I don't think any of the easy achievements need to be removed from the list, I'd just like to see a few more interesting ones added.

Lithium man and speedruns are good fun challenges, but with some creativity it has to be possible to come up with more. Killing blup's mom would be a really good one here. I'm trying to think of more..

For added complexity, you should be paralyzed by an eye you just accidentally hit, unable to recast SoA that started running out just a turn after getting paralyzed... true story.
I realize that deaths should not be achievements, if the quotes TB brought up in his blog are to be taken seriously, but ADoM has sooo many different and often obscure ways of taking the PC's life that *some* of those should be included.
SoA running out comes to mind first, but choking on one's own vomit is a close second, followed by magic missile in a corridor. Those are just too ridiculous to not be included.
I think optional stuff should be added too, like visiting every false level of the maze, getting your crumpled scroll drenched by an ice vortex or having your babbling mouth acid ball the tiny girl on your way to Khelavaster and angering the whole goddamn town in the process. There should be a special place for players that "achieved" the above and not blew their heads off with a handgun.

That's nothing. One of my first characters that got past the ToEF died to not being able to recast SoA due to spider webs. Since then, I instinctively recast SoA as soon as I see spiders or webs...

I'm with TB in this though. Amusing as some deaths are, the player shouldn't be incentivized for actively looking for deaths.

There should be a friday the 13th achievement for when you win with a character started on that date without losing your curse. (Maybe even add a doom achievement?)

And how about a completionist achievement for when you win with every class? Many people try to achieve that.

Clearing a greater undead vault is notoriously hard and also worth an achievement. (Killing all the liches should count as clearing, though - a single ghost that panicked and is hiding in rock shouldn't spoil it.) Clearing a karmic dragon vault is worth an achievement too, if only because they're so rare.

Wishing for the emperor moloch and killing all the summons?

Another fun one could be to kill a monster by summoning a djinn, but maybe that is too spoily?

Funny that you say that, considering that TB's list has about 10 achievements that do not have anything to do with mid-late game. Among the remaining almost everything else is about end-game. 37/71 achievements require the PC to reach below the wall of flames, and about 25+ of these require the PC to win the game. This is ADOM, where some people struggle to get a single win in years. I mean that's just absurd.

Eternium Man / under 10k turns definitely impossible with the current setup.

I'd be at about 66-67, probably only missing Eternium / Under 10k / under 20k / Steel man since i've done an archmage.

thinking about it could probably hit about 50 of those achievements in one archmage game!

I've probably completed 54/68. Exceptions are probably:
- Get the Minotaur Axe: I never bother, the Minotaur Labyrinth is too tedious for my taste
- Score x million points: no idea, I never care about score
- Achieve the Ultimate Nihilist Ending: sup?
- Complete the game within x turns: same as score, I don't care about turns
- Titanium Man: never cared about low xp
- Collect n achievements: this one is not defined, so over 50 would give another achievement I guess
- Eternium Man: this is a tough one... did anyone already completed it without cheating (this means NOT using 1.0.0 p1)?
- Plutonium Man: this involves grinding, so no I probably didn't complete that one
- Steel Man: this is pointless, I think this shouldn't be an achievement

At a conservative estimate 28, maybe a few more. I suspect it will take me a year or two to do all those again though!
