After letting several hundred heroes die in the Drakalor Chain, in about 8 to 10 years I’ve known ADOM, I finally got something to show for. This time I was determined to win, so I downloaded p23 in the 4th of November, and after 85 deaths (and a few more on public uk server) victory came at last. Mostly I rolled archers, wizards or barbarians (and the occasional raven bard, my favourite) thinking I would have more chances with them. But destiny wanted me to finish first with a dwarf healer I guess. Generally I choose wizards for Cup borns, but this time I tried a healer, hoping to build a balanced character, capable of delivering good enough melee damage (find weakness, dwarf race – also good for 2/3 early crowning), ranged damage for the tough enemies (with talents and weapon training) and a little magic (Cup +20% learning + crown of science) for emergencies.

All in all I think the RNG was very supportive, along with the endless spoilers used… Neutral altar UCa2, Spellbook shop on PC1 – with 3x teleportation and invisibility books that took care of many problems. Druid killed with missiles. Dove previously scouted SMC. Bullette gave trouble on UD7 (mixed vault) and had to flee. Got to Dwarftown and finished quests, Graveyard, Pyramid, Assassin guild and gremlin raids, retrieved RotHK, cleared Darkforge surprisingly easy with construct slaying ammo. Accidentally shot Kherab, but managed to flee. Sold all the loot and got crowned with acid and Invisibility Cloak. Was hoping for Preserver, Shirt or Robes, but the Cloak was very useful. So I decided to try ToEF, killing ACW with frost bolt and a couple of generic slaying ammo. ToEF visit was very productive: red dragon scale mail, 2 eternium spears and GoGS. In a pinch the character got a lot stronger so I decided to try the Ice Queen quests (never having done them before). Up until this point everything was familiar to me.

Now the challenge begun. Killed Haggar, then up to clear my first GUV (got a real sense of accomplishment there). Invisible + undead slaying ammo (spent all I had until realizing that master liches were safe to kill in melee, no stat drains) and got scorched spear (not great but turned out to be my end game weapon) and better yet, a RoDS. Killed the diplomat and down the CoC, breezed to about D30 (one level before casino) to find another GUV, this time with not one but 10 Emperor Liches. Decided to skip it not having enough firepower, but luckily the casino had Sun’s Messenger. Betting for those million something gps got me 2 more corruptions, fortunately not bad ones. Back up in the GUV I thought I was in big trouble when EL summoned ancient black dragons were burning through my inventory. One of them was almost dead when he managed to pick up a hulking armor and a potion of ultra healing. Then I remember to try that random dropped Wyrmlance with darkness and one shot them so my problems ended right there. It gave Kinslayer, that I never used.

Resurfaced through DF killing Kherab, to get RCT and clear the BUGS, then dove down again. Cat lord wasn’t hard but for the stress of the first time facing him. Air temple done without losing anything major, a GGV gave the Oman Cloak (nice for the DEX bonus) and Earth Temple was harder than I imagined but then I found that elementals are constructs and killed everything with appropriate slaying ammo.

The mana temple took a while but no threats there. BDC were easier than I imagined. I thought it was like Air Temple lightning environment, but turns out to be only the dragon’s breath that destroys equipment. Nevertheless it’s better to keep the good stuff safe (like a second pair of 7LB). A blue dragon scale mail helped too. Got out of BDC being lvl45 and got Sting from Assassin Prince. Then for the win descended to D50, killed almost everything with throwing RCT, I’d been training for a while, including Fisty.

Coincidentally his demise got me level 50 :D. Meanwhile I had gotten another RoDS and a wand of Wishing with 3 zaps. Wished for Cute Dog but had already talked to the tiny girl before. Did the Unicorn quest to clear corruptions and left. Long live ADOM!

Congartulations on the first win! Next ones will be easier although I always need to adjust to playing weaklings after just winning a game =)
Imo Kinslayer is not that bad, I'd pick it over the Scorched Spear most likely.
