It feels absolutely unreal considering how bad I've been at this game in the past. I think this race/class combination is absolutely overpowered later in the game, you just play on auto-pilot after a certain point.
Anyway, the start was pretty standard, rushing through UD to HMV, then Puppy Cave and Druid Dungeon. Meanwhile I found a book of Frost Bolt, but no neutral altar, so I decided to not bother with Keethrax to keep crowning level requirement low. Pre-Dwarftown CoC yielded no random neutral altars either, so the plan changed to getting level 14 and get crowned and post-crowned before moving on.
It turned out I needed about 100k gold to get my piety up to absolutely close, which meant hauling junk from Big Room to sell in the dwarven shop over and over again. My crowning gift was Staff of the Wanderer which stayed in inventory as nothing more than a memorial. Somewhat bored with going back and forth for cash, I went with dwarf quests, forgetting that Moon Sickle can spawn before Animated Forest. It did, and with 3 artifacts already spawned in the game I had a choice of either getting postcrowned or going to Pyramid. I chose Pyramid.
At this point I already had Teleportation and teleport control, so adventures in Pyramid ended very fast. Dwarven Graveyard posed no challenge either and I realized that I'm already set for a victory, unless a bad case of RNG or my own carelessness screws me over. It almost did, somewhere around level 16-18 some kind of construct (I think it was stone golem, but I'm not sure) scored a critical on me and took me from almost full to 1 HP. It turned out to be the last near-death experience for my character.
After Graveyard, I went to Tomb of the High Kings. Since I already had a ring of fire, I visited Ice Queen and with decent supply of Fire Bolt and Burning Hands cleared Frost Giant Jarl Caves. The greater vault turned out to be an undead one, so I noped the hell out of there. Feeling confident, I went for Tower of Eternal Flames as a first elemental temple, then dived CoC for Water Orb's willpower bonus and went back to surface to claim Ice Queen's rewards. Because I was still low on Toughness because of low potentials, I went to Minotaur Maze which turned out to be much, much easier than I thought it will be (and much more boring too).
Back on surface, with all potions of gain attributes already used, I realized that with the Water Orb and Sword of Nonnak I have exactly 48 willpower. I immediately went to the greater undead vault in FGJC. It took some time and backtracking to regenerate PP, but I cleared it, which gave me Ironfist and Thunderstroke.
I've had no idea Thunderstroke is THAT good. Balors, molochs and greater titans were literally the only things it couldn't easily handle. (I didn't try it in the Earth temple though.)
Anyway, the rest was just playing on auto-pilot. I admit to cheesing Nuurag-Vaarn with scroll of monster aggravation; he was my only kill on that CoC level. "Auto-pilot" backfired on me in Blue Dragon Caves. I just went there without thinking and got 4 out of 10 scrolls of chaos resistance destroyed. It served as a good wake up though and the rest of the game was a breeze. Balors managed to score whole 2 hits on me. A lot of Magic Missiles and Acid Balls later I finished the game.
CoC's greater vault turned out to be undead too (that's four in a row for me, talk about bad luck). I zapped wand of monster detection, saw 10 emperor liches, turned on my heel and never looked back.
I still have no idea how to clear the game with anything other than a good spellcaster. Wizards get so many books of everything that they never run out. You WILL find everything you need without any grinding, you don't need to plan ahead at all. I never used any ammo of slaying, it just was there in my inventory as a decoration. I don't think I'll feel like I've truly beaten this game until I manage to do it with a melee fighter. Which will probably never happen, ha ha.

I was generally using two setups: either what you see with Fire Orb for melee or Sword of Nonnak with Water Orb for spells. Ring of luck was often switched to ring of clear mind. The ridiculous armor, sword and boots all came from a single, big tension room full of chaos warriors. I had plenty of eternium gear to pick from.

Congrats!
I think that with that sword of penetration you could do everything in melee ;-)
Regarding pure melee build, you need to practice in archery anyway. Maybe paladins do not need this IDK, but usually this is what you have to do. Slaying ammo is THE way to kill bosses in that case. Also surviving in the early game if you're not tanky enough.

if you want to win with a melle character...i will strongly recommend barbarian....mayb dwarven (they will start off L mind you) or if you know abt the difficulties in IQD and TOEF, the best is drakeling! i think melle fighters are pretty overpowered too in the late game....an assasin with the cow-axe and phail in missile slot can 1 hit ne1 in the game including fisty (though he might tp around while blinded!)
ofc beastfighters are an option too...though they are difficult in the mid-to-late game, they are brutally good in the early game around lvl 6-20
