(Pretty long, chronological story of my char, skip to last paragraph for the coup de grace if not patient enough)
Well, Farmy was a Candle-born gnomish archer. He explored the upper-PC a bit, then went after Kranach, then went into DD, pickpocketed enough stuff to get Detect Traps using the Kranach money and the money for the accumulated loot in the Outlaw Village. Went down through SMC and UD, got to the HMV, didn't linger long, discovered he had an AoLS in his backpack so kept it nice and safe for Khelly. Went and did the Pyramid (teleported next to Rehetep, shot him with 2 slaying quarrels and left in quite a hurry), cleared Griffyard (got Silver Key from a pickpocket here, I think), killed the black druid, went down the whole PC cave, and, on the bottom, surprise-surprise, a surge of power and dead outlaw later, I had Ironfist in my possession.

From this moment on my goal was to get the stuff needed to do the ToEF, and, while I was at it, some nice stat-increasing potions, water, etc etc. , so I started scumming the Big Room quite a lot. Every passing dragon doubled my gold (put on ring of invis, dropped it, kicked it underneath him, let him pick it up, kill'im, repeat), slayed all trolls and lightning lizards with a dagger of hunting and blessed their corpses to get the regen rate reduction, got shock immunity, had earlier found black dragon scale mail. Went down the CoC, came back with loads of stuff, among it the shield Lust for Glory, so decided to do ToEF and RotHK and Gremlin Cave all in one wilderness go. Gave Garth 100 million GP for each stat just before this. Did all of'em easily, turned chaotic, fed ratling, was looking for boars, out of boredom cleared the Bug Cave and got the rewards, cleared the Assassin Guild, wandered about the forest some more and decided to go down the CoC (thought level 26 might not be enough for boar encounter) . Went past casino, ID-ed stuff inside, it had executor, a ring of elemental mastery and other not-sos-special-yet-useful goodies. Was preparing to go get extra money left-over from the training, had left 100 million GP in reserve above to pay for all the useful-looking loot, went down some more in the CoC, until I found a lesser vault of red dragons one level below the Earth Temple, so I decided to head back and get the money and the loot from above and bring it further down, or at least move it from Dwarftown into the level above Darkforge, since the shortcut was now clear.

It was at this point that disaster struck. I encountered a lovely little doppelganger king, started using wands of fire(balls) on him, had taken him down to critically damaged, selected berserk to give him the final blow in melee, and he withstood that hit and punched through my armor, hitting me for 600 HPs. Stashed in the Ogre Caves I had an extra amulet of life saving found randomly, a RoDS on me, and lots of healing potions etc etc. I really feel bad about this death. This little guy could've clobbered Andy, I feel. Anyhow, I've discovered that it's useful to keep some pen and paper nearby, and write down stuff worth remembering about the char. On the funny side, I found a waterproof blanket lying idly around in the ToEF, thought that was amuzing, as well as a rusty helmet. FLG coming in next post

Snipped quite a lot of the inventory and the FLG because of the 10 000 characters limit. Left in some of the weirder items generated [+0 +8] cloak, etc etc. Thanks to Soirana for the tip about corroding pickaxes from the Merchant guide, it's very useful.

As a general rule of thumb, fighting doggleganger kings in melee is a bad idea.

Just wondering... which random monsters are capable of doing most damage in melee in a single round in the game (not counting SMC and infinite dungeon or other ridiculously experienced monsters)?

Late game:

- Greater titan (200 damage ~always, but how hard can they hit?)
- Doppleganger king (700 damage seems possible)
- Greater moloch (even 1000 damage possible?)

Mid game:

- Berserker emperor (100 damage easily)
- Werewolf king (100 damage easily)

It's funny there are many monsters which are way more dangeours than the chaos god himself.

If you don't have the right elemental resistance, any wyrm can do breath attacks in excess of 500 damage. Water dragon can easily do 300+ damage in one round as well. Master Cat can do a couple hundred damage per turn. MaLaKaI is probably the most damaging, if I had to guess. I think he has 8 attacks at 100+ damage per hit.

I was just hit for 360 by a greater titan. That wasn't a critical hit, and I have 50 PV...

So lust for glory still exists? Or did you mean the nature's friend?

Anyhow, never seen the silver key generated outside of thief crowning present. Interesting stuff.

Nature's Friend. Check the FLG. Lust For Glory supposedly can't be generated in 1.1.1 unless the executable is hacked.

That's very interesting... do you happen to remember where you found the silver key? I was also under the impression it was a crowning only artifact.

Evidently using ToGu's patch, which makes the death even worse - in the regular game that doppler king would have berserked and caused over 1000 damage.

He said lust for glory in his post. But the flg show nature's friend so as I suspected it was just a misnomer ;)

Hmm.. nice, I just noticed that he generated an adamantium dagger of penetration as well. Amazing luck. But i guess its worthless if the PC died right? ;P

Sorry, it was Nature's Friend, not Lust for Glory. The two of them, cumulated, seem to give every resistance in the game, just like the long sword Trusted One. Nature's Friends is the one with all the elemental resistances, so used for ToEF.

Not really sure about the silver key, because that trek in the wilderness was something like: do Pyramid, get to Griffyard, pickpocket everything on the level above, pickpocket each skeleton that attacked while in the tunnel, dump valuable/heavy stuff, go finish off Keethrax. While descending towards Keethrax I noticed a weird message when opening the door, because it'd been done with the silver key. I'd never seen it before either. I like pickpocketting. You get extra water, and occasionally a really good item, or something moderately useful: blankets of all 3 types, the iron gauntlets ironfist etc etc. And while you're at it your shield gets to block and deflect attacks, increasing your skill in Shields, so it's useful.

Yeah, I'm using the ToGu patch, maybe that's why I could find it. It does indeed state that it makes several non-guaranteed artifacts obtainable again. I'm actually kind of annoyed by the prevention of the monster fighting in a blind rage, because that would've been fair. On the other hand, the one useful thing it ought to do, stop monsters levelling up so quickly, well, it doesn't do it, or at least I don't notice much of a difference. Large spiders always become a huge pain, so do jackals. I mostly get it with spiders because I wander around the Big Room a lot.

There's more to this business about "Crowning artifacts are not available randomly." than is currently understood (by me, at least). The Bracers of War, the Emerald Dagger, the Robes of Resistance, even Executor, for god's sake, are supposedly crowning artifacts for certain classes, yet they are certainly available randomly in 1.1.1. Other crowning artifacts seem not to be available randomly - the Shirt of the Saints and of course Vanquisher spring to mind.

JellySlayer

Well, my understanding is that there is a list of "random artifacts" that can be found by all players. These include Whirlwind, Executor, Wyrmlance, etc.

Some of these artifacts can also be crowning gifts. In fact, many of them are.

There is another set of artifacts that cannot be found randomly, and are only available when the player is crowned. Justifier, Vanquisher, Sun's Messenger, etc. fall into this category.

That seems to fit the observations. So the question arises what's the easiest way to generate a list. Scum PoU results? How spoily do we get in general posts? And how is the select the spoily text thing done? Wrap HTML tags and specify font color?

JellySlayer
07-25-2009, 12:24 AM
For spoily, you can do [color=lemonchiffon ]some spoily text here[/ color] without the spaces.

This is the list the I used when writing the ADOM Wiki: Artifact (http://ancardia.wikia.com/wiki/Artifact). I'm pretty confident in the placements of about 98% of the artifacts there. There's only one or two that I'm not completely sure of.

You could probably test it by just repeatedly generating level 50 characters in ADOMBot, then getting the a bunch of precrowns. The only limitation would be that you'd have to assume that the precrown list is entirely the same as the random list... Alternatively, just going through the hall of fame as seeing what the artifact lists look like would probably work okay.

AFAIK, somehow some of the non-guaranteed artifacts weren't obtainabile anymore. Togu thought this was a bug on TB's part, so his patch made them available again. Using the patch, I've definitely obtained Vanquisher as a pre-crown gift. Don't really know what exactly the problem is in Adom 1.1.1. . I'll try digging up the RGRA archives. Might find something useful.

As I understand it, TB's implementation of class-specific crowning gifts was intended. This was to stop complaints about "stupid" deities giving a beastfighter a weapon as a crowning gift, for example. This may have had the unintended consequence of making certain artifacts unobtainable by any means; Lust For Glory is such a case. It also, presumably intentionally, made some artifacts obtainable only by certain classes at crowning time. Another effect was that the crowning gift was decided at the start of the game. Prior to this, crowning gifts were randomly decided at crowning time (making them scummable). ToGu's patch, as I understand it, does away with class-specific crowning gifts, among other things. That is probably not a good thing. The other things it does are debatable.

The list of random artifacts JellySlayer linked to is correct. It has been tested in game with multiple precrowns (which showed a roughly even spread of probabilities for each). To be honest I can easily recite that list by heart from my max precrown games... Is the list in the GB? If not it's worthy of mention somewhere, perhaps in the precrown section. It's worth noting that many of them are fairly undesirable, especially for beastfighters - multiple precrowns often lead to disappointment. Also any of the random arts weighing 10s or less can be pickpocketed (that's BoW, Preserver, IronFist, RoI, Soaker and Whirlwind). All of the artifacts can be generated in greater vaults, surges of power, shops, uselessness gifts or just at random, assuming they haven't been preselected as the crowning gift and the danger level is high enough.

Meanwhile, back on the topic of the OP, if you absolutely must melee a doppelganger king, do so with a humanoid slaying weapon. My current archer just Executed two of those bastards in the TotHK waiting for my Ogre Mage to turn up, barely broke sweat.

Demented ratlings seem to have 392 hitpoints on the average. Usually they
attack 16 times. A hit causes 86-159 points of damage (114 on the average).
They seem to have a speed of 124-244 (140 on the average).

16x114 = 1824? ;) And that was with just 6 artifacts..

Or poke the doppleganger king with a phase dagger works wonders, especially with skill level 7+ in daggers you do decent damage then.
