I recently discovered that Adom was very much alive and kicking after not having played since about the time when weapon pre- and suffixes were just added. Decided to try a beastfighter because I've never once played one before and was happily surprised. With a hurthling beastfighter the hurdle is obviously going to be the very early game which doesn't seem like a problem to me.
Anyway, like his ten predecessors, Bruce XI (Bruce IX actually made it to the arena fighting but suicided after a misunderstanding with Dak) decided to try the SMC/UD start and get out tough enough on the other side or die trying. Surge in SMC resulted in the rather pointless scorched spear which was later sold at a way too low price in holeinthewall just to be able to get Bruce detect traps before next experience level. Ran around cowardly until blanket was secured and then picked off most of the SMC baddies in pursuit one by one downstairs for four or five xp levels. Some people seem to think that the poison resistance class power is kind of meh but I actually like it. It's one less potentially deadly thing to worry about.
Wanted to convert to N to get detect traps before the pyramid and eventually found a suitable altar on D2 before heading back to the east. Did druid quest for power, punching and throwing rocks at everything with little issue. Found a nice pair of 7lb in the cavernous level of PC, just lying about. Was levelling fast and decided to postpone the puppy vault, so back to CoC and dwarftown things. Felt comfortable with looking for stairs in DH1 the normal way because of movement speed and scroll of magic mapping revealed stairs in DH2 in the next room. Screwed up by giving the golden gladius away before talking to Thrundarr to get reward after winning the arena title, so he just cancelled the quest and told me to kill another random instead which was luckily no problem. I think perhaps Thrundarr's kill assignments are a bit nicer nowadays than they potentially were in the past?
Then did pyramid, dwarven graveyard and finally went ToTHK without anything too exciting having happened. Got crowned with Nature's Companion and acid immunity in the tomb dungeon. I also think I found a greater vault with giants here which gave me several levels and the artifact sling. Kind of low PV throughout the game but I was mostly fine since blessed spenseweed was plenty. Found a ring shop in one of the dungeons where I procured rings of ice, fire and slaying.
Ice Queen domain (which I think is a very nice addition to the game that kind of makes the ToEF less out of place difficulty wise) is obviously interesting and the vault was filled with fire things. The wyrms are really nasty. I managed to kill one with wands but decided to sac the rest at an upstairs altar. I think I should've just left them alive to return for the kills later, but well. I had around 350 HP at this point and got down to 1(!) at one very disturbing point. My strategy was to punch on as long as I was over 200 and if not, retreat and spenseweed myself. But of course, the grueling grind gets boring and we get careless... Anyway, I get out of the FGJC at level 30 and I haven't been to the water temple yet realizing I've wasted the now a little more appealing minotaur maze. I decide to do the ToEF first and have no problems. Boss goes down to dragon slaying arrows. Yey.
Still no wish (although I'm not desperate enough to do pools for a regular ending) so I decide to let the library be Khelly's last chance. By now I have one harmless corruption (You thrive on the flesh of order) and one acceptable one (scales, which I kind of like since my PV sucks to begin with). I think to myself, "Let's not risk any scrolls or potions of corruption removal in the Rift, and also, let's not bring my thick gauntlets. I won't need them anyway." First thing that happens in the rift dungeon is that I get poison hands. Pretty nasty stuff in the library, but all goes well in the end. Final chance for a wish is the water dragon cave, but I later realize that I didn't even bother to look in the pile for a ring or wand.
Khelly dies and two or three levels down I get a RoDS which I use to get the Find weakness skill. I ran into a tension room with cave tigers earlier and managed to misclick one or two to death, so no cat ring. Didn't do anything in the casino. Cat lord went down quickly to humanoid slayers. Another greater fire things vault with Sun's messenger AND True aim. I lose the rune covered trident, which was going to be my final level missile of choice, to a bug. I get concentration from a potion and decide to read all spellbooks I have left behind, including acid ball. Temples were very easy, except maybe for the fact that Nuurag drained a few more points than I would have liked. GUV on D47 or D48 that I skipped after not item detecting any nice bracers. Get silver key as uselessness gift. Kill all the things on D50 with true aim, magic missile, or acid ball. Get rid of corruptions by help of unicorn and I still have almost 20 corruption removing things left in my backpack. I should have killed him for a better score, but I'm too nice for that.
Most artifacts in the memorial file I never even saw, but I wasn't looking too closely either. I regret not identifying the crown, which would have been helpful. All in all, I think 7lb, beastfighter movement ability and high speed overall was key in this game. Really sloppy playing in the first fire vault almost ended in disaster. This usually happens to me when I play for extended periods without taking breaks. The only other really nasty situation (before the very early game, which is constantly nasty) was a doppleganger king in the rift dungeon that I nearly didn't get away from. As I usually tend to do, I wore an amulet of free action almost exclusively during the whole game.
