View Full Version : Doomed Mist Elf Fighter

After a long hiatus, I finally started getting some new doomed characters going. Picked up an r60 win as a ME Fighter, quite an interesting R/C, I found, and ended up with a stupidly powerful endgame character.

I decided to roll an ME fighter on Candle, meaning I could skip Healing and have a near-guaranteed Heir gift. Heir gift is pretty nice for Fighters, an eternium girdle [0,+4], which, combined with a decent starting roll of 11 PV, meant that my elf had 15 PV from higher metal gear out of the gate. Pretty nice. I decided to play this one with Item Drops setting on High. This is a pretty fun setting, because even without TH you are just swimming in items. But it's 50% lower score and is a pretty big crutch. Probably won't be using it again for doomed characters, but for this run it was interesting.

Started out with beginner dungeon, Druid Dungeon and Puppy Cave. Didn't kill the druid until a bit later, and I think I left the vault for awhile too, but still finished up the early area around level 10 or so. A nice early find was a mithril longsword of penetration, which I used for most of the early game. Interesting tidbit: I basically didn't use polearms at all this entire game. I'm pretty sure the only points I have in them are due to Arena training. I did a couple of the easier random dungeons to gain some xp and get more gear, found herbs in the DDL which I used only a bit. Eventually went back and killed druid and finished puppy cave without any trouble. By the time I hit the CoC I was about level 14 with ~30 PV. Visited Thundarr and got some quests. Killed golems up to level 16 in DF, exchanged my stats so that To was boosted to 22, did Pyramid, then went back and finished DF. Sadly, could not wear crown of science due to being a mist elf. Picked up some nice intrinsics from Darkforge pools--Paralysis resist, death resist, teleportitis. I lost control for quite a while, but had a ring so it was okay. Exited DF around level 19, grabbed wand of cold from IDQ (killed a Great White Wyrm in the basement), and visited High Kings. Unfortunately, ugh, my climbing set was lost. So scummed around High Kings for awhile. At just before level 22, I found a wand of wishing (3), so that was my ticket out. But first, I hit level 22 and went into the Maze.

I hate the Maze, and doing it doomed is nasty. Since I had teleportitis, I was able to mostly just teleport around looking for the stairs. After a few dead ends and some lost stats to mino mages (I only killed a small handful of them and avoided the rest), I found the emperor, blinded him and dropped him with a wand of magic missile. Picked up AoTME, corpse, 3 PoCC, 6 PoGA and Staff of Wanderer. Funny thing about this point in the game--I actually had a huge stockpile of cursed/uncursed PoGA (about 8 after the minotaur) and no holy water. Ate the corpse, brought my stats back up with herbs, used a bit of chaos alchemy to make more water. My stats at this point were pretty massive--about 30 across the board, with To just edging toward 40. Plus I had AoTME for ridiculous damage. At that point I think I was running around with about 15/40 DV/PV. From there, I did IDQ, and hit the frost giant caves. Killed Haggar and started into the greater vault (giants). The artifact was a green armor, which I hoped was Robe of Resist (turned out to be Shirt of Saints). Cleared the greater vault with AoTME. The titan gave me a bit of trouble since I needed to be very careful about his missile attacks--with mist elf defense and nearly 50 PV, most melee attacks were okay, but missiles were still very bad. Also, first aid is awesome. I had a couple occasions where I was able to restore over 100 HP wit maxed first aid. Next stop was ToEF. I didn't have a fireproof blanket, but did have a RoI, so I suffered some minor equipment damage, but nothing too bad. ACW went down in 2 or 3 hits. Probably would have been 1 hit, but I forgot to bless the AoTME until much later.

Dove the CoC. Saved Khelly with a wish. Did Water Temple. Nothing too interesting in Casino (Black Tome was there). I passed on cat lord the first time down, having killed about 30 cats at least at the time. Dove to D:45 for second greater vault--giants again, with 10 titans this time. Cleared for Shezestriakis, Sun Messenger, and Justifier. Nothing I really needed--I basically wasn't using missiles at all at this point, but I improved my other gear a bit, got another PoGA or two plus a bazillion holy waters and some nice XP. Killed cat lord. He was tough, I had to heal a bunch of times, but it wasn't dreadful. Around this time I used one wish for a ring of elemental mastery, since I didn't have great resistances at that point. I grabbed immune to pain around this time, which let me use some metal items without damage. I ended up using Shezestriakis for the last portion of the game. The -15 to hit penalty is no big deal, I had over 100 at that point, and 15 extra DV is very nice when using a two-hander. The autocursing is a nuisance, but I wasn't doing much ring swapping at that point and had lots of holy water to spare, finally. Cleared Air, Earth, Mana with no real problems. Corruption was bad at this point, between dooming and being above day 90, but I had plenty from Khelly, Mystic, Ice Queen, and Minotaur Emperor, plus a few drops. Uselessness was Perion Plate... had really bad luck with random artifacts this game. D:50 had one last surprise for me... giant threat room of greater earth elementals. Almost died there. They have powerful missile attacks which are still problematic for ME, and being surrounded is pretty much unavoidable. Used most of my leftover heals on that fight, but managed to clear them all. The fleeing elementals got trapped against the walls of the main area in D:50, so I guessed it was undiggable and went for the kill the hard way. Well, not that hard. Killed the mutants and jellies, opened the two sides. I had a few daemon slayers that I used to soften up the balors before dropping them in melee. I then went near the main room, excited the balors with far slaying wand, then turn off corruption and waited for them to mob me. Cleared the balors without too much trouble, used some leftover corruption removal to clear everything, used my last wish for a cute dog, and ended the game.

Turncount ended up at 92k, which is pretty good considering all the turns spent in High Kings, the Maze, and two greater vaults. OTOH, I barely used herbs this game, and didn't do much livesaccing at altars or anything like that.

Out of curiosity, have you written up a post/miniguide somewhere about dealing with damnation? AFAIK the biggest issue is... more equipment destruction, more vulnerability to special attacks from monsters? Can't get crowned? There's the darkness thing but that doesn't seem that big a deal if you are aware of it, light sources are pretty damn common throughout the game.

Very nice. I always leave my climbing set on the first stairs down in High Kings these days - having it destroyed is horrible.

Out of curiosity, how do you deal with losing doom from poolsipping? Pray?

Normally, yeah. I don't usually bother with much piety beyond holy water, so it isn't a huge loss to have to start from scratch if I need to. I don't think I had to do it this game, but I've done it in other games.

A few years ago I had started to write something like that, but never got finished. I guess it's probably pretty out-of-date due to the Resurrection changes. The biggest issue by far is having to worry about paralysis-type deaths. Most of the time, if you get hit with paralysis from a ghul or carrion crawler or whatever, it's game over. I've lost characters with level 16+ and 30-40 PV/DV to ghuls in the Griffyard before. If you're lucky enough to find an early wish, amulets of free action are probably your best bet.
Homunculus and very rarely harpies and jackalweres can kill with sleep as well. After the first few levels where nearly everything can kill you, that's the biggest problem. The darkness thing isn't that big of a deal since light sources are fairly common and you can usually just avoid dark rooms unless they happen to cover the stairs or something. Darkness doesn't have the strategic value that it used to, so you aren't going to be tempted to try to use it in combat unless you're really desperate.

[edit]Interestingly, it looks like changing the challenge setting at character creation stops achievements from being unlocked.

So praying repeatedly and annoying your deity has the effect of the god eventually dooming the PC?
What about stuff like lightning bolts, doesn't it pose a threat to PC at level 1?

This is a pretty amazing run, I bow down in respect.

The order goes: Deity grumbles -> Inventory curse -> Inventory destroy/Doom/Nothing (depending on what's in your inventory) -> Lightning -> Summons. If your inventory is empty, you'll get doomed on the middle step.

Ah, that's convenient in the context of playing a doomed char.
Is being cursed also a requirement in this challenge or did you simply happen to obtain the intrinsic and had no way of removing it?

Cursing isn't a requirement, no, but it's pretty likely that I pick it up somewhere along the line. I don't go out of my way to avoid meleeing karmics (unless I have Fate from a pool), so that's usually where it comes from.
