View Full Version : Non-Random Starting Attributes

Before I go file an RFE (which for me has been like > /dev/null) is there any plan to add an option to basically pick consistent attributes every game? (I put this in the Steam forum because I own the steam copy and you can do something like this with Sage).

The attribute screen could be changed to something like the following:


Shall your attributes be [u]nmodified (standard), [r]andomly modified or modified by answering [q]uestions?

I really would like to have ADOM be more competitive but its pretty hard when there can be such a massive difference between starting characters of the same race and class leading to roll scumming.

The other option to not change the starting screen but score the game differently for weaker starting attributes but I see this leading to scumming for bad attributes to get scoring boost.

BTW I find it hilarious that if you go press "!" to customize the game to choose "Hunger off" it says "The game score will be rated at 25%" yet getting decent attributes at the start is far far far far more of an influence of the game difficulty. That 25% looks like it was pulled out of some ones...

I hope there is still randomness involved. Amount of stats you get and randomly rolled basic stats. I hope it won't end up being millions of Appearance 1 characters with huge Toughness.

Correct, the version I finished implementing yesterday allows for the following:

You can choose between Determined by Fate / random (like random today), questions (like today), chaotic (1/3 random, 1/3 questions, 1/3 point-based).
Point-based is a new addition. Point-based works within todays limits (so there are base attributes determined by race and add-ons for gender, profession and star sign). Additionally you have a pool of points to distribute between all attributes. Attributes have different costs (and this might require a little tweaking when tested) and you have enough points to generate an "average good" character, the freedom of choice being balanced by the fact that random characters might yield better or worse results.

In addition ADOM memorizes past choices, so you e.g. can directly re-use a past character or configure the character creation process to e.g. always use point-based attribute determination (and then you even can re-use past generated attributes).

So all in all it allows for what you ask for and more :-)

We are right now discussing if R65 will be an ASCII-only prerelease for the prerelease testers as the changes to the character generation processes have been extensive and Zeno and Krys (and me and Jochen) probably will need more time to get all this implemented for the graphical interface. Thus it might be very reasonable to collect feedback on the ASCII version first before investing too much time in a graphical version that then needs to be changed again.

Looking good. Maybe I can try pure melee only characters better with this. And if opening question system also show stat raises and downs it will be even better to use that imo, I hate switching to guidebook trying to figure out what's going to happen.
