The Abyss has swallowed the League of Fame. In a shocking turn of events, player Couchfighter managed to survive a challenging turn, but left the paladin Ying in a hopeless situation, wiping out himself and the rest of the team in subsequent turns. While the remaining players from the League of Fame will have the opportunity to play on, the dead will have the opportunity to be reborn.

The Trial:

Ying the Paladin is in bad shape, hungry, hurt, and pursued by a skeleton warrior. His once-powerful weapons and armor are in tatters. Each player who has died in either the League of Fame or Fortune (excepting Couchfighter, who has already attempted this save, as well as Soirana and Blasphemous, if they die shortly) will have one opportunity to pass this save. The first player who can manage to survive 2000 turns and descend once, you will be revived into the League of Fame and can continue play. You must make your attempt before play is finished in the League of Fame, so, considering that there's only two players left in that league, means that time is of the essence.

Couchfighter's log is reproduced in the spoiler below. Details on this particular level start on turn 14769. Note that the character is currently at "ground grumbles" in terms of piety for healing.

14778: Jumped by Lightning Lizard immediately, took big damage but brought it down. UnID Short Bow burned by breath attack.
->14791: Pray and heal a while but hunger forces us to start exploring again.
15057: Very hungry now, killed Swordsman and Large Gnoll. Gnoll drops a Ghul corpse. (what the...) Desperate for food we eat the putrid corpse which paralyzes and provides some very slight satiaton, down to hungry again.
15127: Quaff random potions. Id'd Potion of Gain Attributes. +1 Toughness! Potion of Charisma Id'd. Potion of Invisibility id'd. Goes hunting while the effect lasts.
15155: Killed Dark Elven Priestess and mob of spiders. No drops.
15164: Drink id'd Potion of Troll's Blood.
15173: Find and equip uncursed Girdle of Carrying [+0, +0]. Not that helpful. Found gloves.
15209: Read scroll gambling for uncursing. Is actually uncursing ! Uncursed Staff of Smiting. With free hands we equip id Ring of Mental Stability [+0, +1] {Le+4} and unimpressive Archery Gloves.
15241: Because this is ADOM and we can't have nice things, the next monster encountered is a Fire Vortex. Staff of Smiting consumed in the explosion. Yep. Amber potion, Dogo Futsf scroll also lost. Equip id unimpressive mithril warhammer, equip id cursed mithril long sword (-1, 1d8+3).
15285: Killed large spider, no corpse. Try to kill webbed large gnoll but skeletal warrior also approaching, and we're still low hp from the vortex blast. Skeleton at full health and gnoll still alive and down to 20 hp we have to flee. Fled to small room and closed door, using holy symbol to heal some hp and piety we'll desperately need.
15388: Skeleton Warrior found us again. Turn Undead success, close door again and pray some more. 20 turns later it returns. Turn Undead failure, taking hits, fleeing the room we healed in and back down the corridor we find the gnoll from before, and kill it. No drop.
15400-15999: Where's a Benny Hill theme when I need it? Panicked near death shuffle featuring Werewolf, Fire Drake, Skeleton Warrior, Stone Golem, 2x Pray for healing (ground rumbling!), Hungry!, Cave Lizard, Stunned and Bleeding at 2 HP. Not going to describe it all in detail, watch the video. :P
16000: Still alive, somehow. Hungry! 16 HP. The One Who Rages is very cranky. Skeleton Warrior still at large and blocking the way to the still undiscovered stairway down. And so I pass on the save file of a very, VERY screwed orc paladin who I would be extremely impressed if anyone survives another round of playing with. I swear I didn't intend for him to be passed on this way.

After my failure was posted, I have tried this multiple times (like 30) and did not manage to descend or survive in any way.
Without a very lucky random drop on your escape route away from the skele warrior, this is nigh-impossible.

I tried for fun, even though I am not eliminated. If one had perfect knowledge from a death, I wonder if it's solvable?
What if one saves right before any interesting possibility, and restore if the result is less than ideal? The strength penalty is crippling for a melee figher.

Oh, I could pull this off with save scumming, it would probably take a couple hundred reloads but yeah.
That's not really the point though, is it?

I'm flattered, but I doubt I'm in the top twenty.

[edit]For the save itself, what I found was that the main problem you will run into, assuming you even get a food drop, is that the stairs is covered by white worms, with a master assassin and a fire drake in the same room. With the darkness scroll the character has, you can safely kill the drake and make some progress on the worms, but as soon as the master assassin makes it to the front of the worm pile you're pretty much screwed.

I'd say the major obstacle is how stats are lowered through starvation, making melee a frustrating grind.
If the char managed to find enough food, he could survive the worms, the drake and maybe even the assassin.

Yeah, the major obstacle is definitely how quickly you hit starvation, reducing your damage to minimal. If you could find a lot of food fast (not just a bit to stave off starvation), everything else is theoretically beatable with kiting and crits.
