Is it harder on Steam?

So I've played ADOM for a long time... and I'm dying WAY more on the steam version. Seriously getting smashed. Arrows from barbarians almost always hit and do dmg
I'm at low lvl with elven mail and that usually tilts odds in your favour somewhat. Never had this many issues with paladins. As far as I know I haven't set the difficulties any higher.

Do others think its more brutal?

There shouldn't be differences in the basic mechanics unless you accidentally stumbled your way into making a crowd mode character.

'Vile Spirits' which are ghosts of you and your friends' former adventurers may appear on Steam version though and those definitely add significant challenge.

What version did you play before? There were a lot of changes made over time (not just for Steam) some of which may be affecting this.
