Hey guys, this is my first character that has a real chance. Got incredibly lucky with spells, as you will see.

My character is Strawberry, a level 18 necromancer. He has a really great spell deck with tons of excellent ones for the tower including Frost Bolt and Ice Bal (I have both of their books as well)
Anyways, looking to take on the ToEF. So, here is my log file. Any help would be great:

Items that may come in handy that are not in the file: Huge store of spell books, many weapons (non as good as the trident damage wise though), and an INCREDIBLY powerful undead slave. He has around 600 HP, can insta kill anything (have found nothing that can beat him, not even any bosses), including steel golems, and is like level 30 lol. Great corpse find (Troll Chief), but I will NOT bring him lol. Do not want Sunshine (his name ;) ) to turn evil. So anyways, what should I bless, what should my strategy be, ect. The only major weakness I see is the lack of teleport control and high health. Also, should I use my incredible shield (lucky drop, the same monster dropped some un cursed SLB's, but I found blessed ones later) or the trident? I know it has demon slaying, and I can throw it, so it might be good against the worm.

Thats a low level to tackle TOEF I'm not saying it's not doable but you will maybe have a challenge.
Are you immune to fire? if not you want maybe something that heals you like ring of regeneration for example or a good stack of blessed spenseweed.
No ring of ice, kiss your hat, cloak and 7lb goodbye.
You have a very small amount of castings.

If you're going, read up on your frost bolts first.

If you want a better chance I'd suggest you first do water temple in Caverns of Chaos and continue down to wall of flames.
Maybe also frost giants/ice queens first quest before TOEF.

Thanks! I was not sure if Ice Queen had rewards that were worth it, but mate temple might be good. I pacified the Big Room so herbs are easy to come by.

Ice queen rewards are always worth it! FGJC's are xp heaven, and as a caster you can beat 2 of 3 vault types with ease. As for Ice queen 2nd quest, I'd recommend the lawful route, bonus will is always nice.

Just make sure you kill the berserker prince before he lets everything out and you should be able to breeze through the entire area.

Also with the potions of cure corruption from the Ice queen you can use one on the ACW without worrying about losing the only one you have.

Your casting levels are dangerously low, pretty much across the board. Do you have a stash of extra books you can read? At your level you should really have like 1000+ castings of your important spells. Your Le score isn't great, but I'd expect at your level you'd be able to get more out of your books than you have. Since you've done Darkforge, you can always use the Crown of Science when you read your books. Willpower is also very low, especially considering you're using Sword of Nonnak. Should be able to boost this with herbs.

Your HP is not great for ToEF. <150 HP is definitely in the danger zone. It's doable, but it requires some care.

What's your piety like? If you have spare cash somewhere, you should consider getting crowned. Do you know how to bless items? Looking at your inventory, I'm guessing maybe you don't?

Overall 110Hp and no Alertness is no go in tower unless you absolutely sure what you will do in there...

As a gnome (just my guess, lol), you can't really be capped at To14... so incease To, unleash slave on darkforge (mostly to check if knive of endurance is generated), get RoI (neutral visit to dwarven mystic - yes need tp control). Also get crowned (preferably not as chaotic) and grab water orb (at very least for willpower bonus).

But increase your stats (willpower 15 with Nonnak, seriously?)

Thanks for all of your advice. It is looking like the Ice Temple it is. Reading up, I should be able to whip through it. And yes, I have around 5 extra Frost Bolt books somewhere, will read those.

As for my health, it was drained by a monster... I was at 230 but for some reason now it halted itself. My piety is very high, but it is a chaotic god. However I know a few ways i could become neutral. Would by piety cross over if I turned neutral as well? As for my will power, yes it is dangerously low. I was pissed at the lack of alertness, but learned to live with it.

Also, I do know how to bless items, however I do not know which object are worth blessing... I know in the ToEF a fireproof blanket would be nice but other than that...

Also, can anyone clarify, is the trident better than what I currently have equipped? I know my will power is horrible for a caster, basically Nonnak is my crutch. Will check dark forge again before I tackle the Ice Tower. And stat increase will be fine, the big room is all mine herb wise.

Your stats are extremely low for lvl 18.
Are you sure they are already at potential maximums? Training with Garth up to 19 is cheap (14:2001 gp, 15: 3001gp, 16-18: 6000 gp per increase), not to mention your Herbalism.
Especially your Learning stat. You have only 198 memorisation left in the Frost Bolt - increase it a little and your character will never ever run out of it since there are so many spellbooks of Frost Bolt falling for the Necromancers.

Bless your scrolls of identify and read one, no need to walk around with so many unidentified scrolls and potions.
Drink your stat boosting potions (after training with Garth) - you are about to reach territory with high item destruction rates, so it is better to use them now.


Since you have such a good thrall, let him play around in the Animated Forest while you are reading the spellbooks. You'll get a ton of new spellbooks and valuable items.

Well, in essence of it health is based on Toughness and level.
Level up gives some amount of hp/mp dependant n class by itself.
Toughness at certain points, gives 1HP per char level (in your case boosting To to 20 - would clear checks at 16/18/20 for 3xlevel ~54, + ~3 from direct bonus, getting wllpower to 20 would add another 10 so that would ad ~67, which would be low, but not horrible).

It's nice talk about towers and domains, but what happened to water orb?

Absolutely Red Dragon Scale Mail if you're planning to do the tower...usually water orb come first, if you don't want to bounch into the walls confused by the Wyrm..

Okay, even more good news. First off, I 2841 found out my weapons I snagged from the Darkforge are really good.

But second, after I started back down the CoC, I found a herd of blink dogs, and one dropped a corpse! So teleport control! I think I am set for awhile.

None of these is a good caster weapon.

Good caster weapon is some nice, no drawbacks included on-hander, since shield is not optional. I'd stick with Nonnak -- +Death+Wi, som minor defense bonus. You have spells for tough things.

The day is smiling:) Rune covered trident is a great weapon and demon slayer, just put it in missile slot and train it a lot..weapons I see are all twohandy, surely you are not going to melee an orb guardian as a spellcaster....he is going to become very powerful , just avoid to berserk against some huge monster like the Snake or the Wyrm:)

Yes. So, you add the trident to the missile slot? Cool! I read it returns when thrown, so even better.

Here is my load out for the ToEF (after I grab the water orb, and are done training by toughness. willpower was just trained for 25k) :

I also might find something better in-between temples, but I highly doubt it. I also have plenty of fireproof/waterproof blankets for both temples. Thanks for all of you help guys! If you think I should change something from my load out, just post.

You should drop the ring of fire resistance for something better. It's a completely wasted slot right now that you have RDSM. Your ring of slaying is also really bad. A blessed ring of damage (on right hand) would be much better. Or some other ring... regeneration would be ideal, ring of high kings would be okay. In your earlier post you had a [+0,+4] ring of speed that looked pretty good too.

Your bracers also aren't doing anything. You may as well just sell/discard them.

Generally, wearing the ankh is preferred for regular wandering. Necklace of the eye isn't so useful.

Thanks! Switched out the rings for High Kings and that Ring of Speed. Switched out the Ankh for a Amulet of Rapid Regeneration... Think it will help in replacement of a ring of regeneration.

Also. for the bracers, they are just RNG Fodder.

Still miss the ring of ice, your 7LB are going to burn as well your cloak..worn cloacks burns even with the ring equipped..solution is high metal gear (iron melts), the ankh equipped, and everything that burn stored in the backpack protected by blankets..

Ankh increase durability of the blankets, I usually keep the cloack slot empty (unless I have an artifact cloack)...7LB are the most precious thing you have, I would drop 'em in the entrance of CoC before enter the tower anyway..

Ankh also won't be destroyed and gives dv/pv which is nice for a place as tough as the tower. Also remember that you have teleport control now so if you become neutral you can get a ring of ice from the dwarven mystic in dwarf town (the guy in the 2x2 room that can only be accessed through teleportation).

Also if you do that, make sure that your ring of ice is blessed.

There are no metal replacements for cloaks. Cloaks are, as far as I'm concerned, more flammable than paper in ADOM, so if you have a decent one, you may as well just unequip it in the ToEF, even if you have a Ring of Ice.

Ankh gives [+2,+2], as well as Luck, Fate Smiles, and luck (the other kind). Luck bonuses are all stackable, and has a fairly strong effect. One very simple example of this is that luck basically acts in exactly the same way as Willpower for resisting confusion attacks. The ankh effectively adds +8 or so to your Wi score as far as confusion resist is concerned. With your Wi as low as it is, that will be a big help against the Wyrm (as will equipping water orb in tool slot instead of your pickaxe).

Cool! Will re-equip. However, I am chaotic as of now, and therefore will not talk to the dwarf. And those SLB's are not coming with me... Would I be worth re-entering the water cave now that I can teleport to steal some items? I have darkness so that is good too. She may have a ring of ice for me, and I have a waterproof blanket to protect my inventory. Otherwise, I am almost to the animated forest atm, and then on to the water temple.

Anyway, in my experience having more than one fireproof blanket does not increase your time in the tower without the ring, I saw three blankets going one after one in few turns...I think they take damage all the same time..

Darkness is... not so helpful in Water Dragon Cave anymore. I haven't honestly experimented with it, but with your current HP, that sounds crazy risky to me.

If you aren't feeling comfortable going to the Tower, I think the Ice Queen Domain is probably your best bet. You can get through most of it quite easily/quickly with your ring of invisibility, and gain access to the Frost Giant Caves. Definitely worth a visit, especially for a caster. If the greater vault is favourable (ie. non-undead), you can probably gain 5-10 levels and get a mountain of high level gear out of it. You'll need lots spell castings though, much more than you had showed on your last .vlg.

If you are a thief guild member and have lots of cash on hand, you could spend a pile on Climbing training. Going to the Library might be a good option for you, but you need 100 Climbing, so you're probably many levels away.

[edit]I don't think having stacks of blankets is helpful, no. Luck (ie. wearing the ankh) is very helpful though.

The water dragon cave is virtual suicide to rob at your stage (or sometimes ever). Blessed ring of ice is enormously valuable as people have mentioned, potentially worth changing align over - but it's ok to just replace all your gear with higher metals instead. I think crystal is fire-resistant (not sure) so the helm can stay, but if not you'll definitely want to exchange it as well. That piece is incredibly good and you don't want to lose it.

Yea, the headgear was a drop from a Stone Giant lord my Minion 1 shotted in the High Mountain Village. And sounds good, the Water Dragons can keep their loot. I suppose I will do the water temple, then Ice Queen, then Tower. Also, I have a crap ton of Frost Bolt books. I read 6 and have 5 more that I will read soon. Your defensive scores look very good. If you can get your HP up a bit, you should be in winning shape.

Just try not to piss off your minion ;)

I cannot imagine how badly I would be rekt if he turned. However, the ability to destroy literally anything is rather nice at times. For some odd reason, he is actually "smart" as in I rarely must tell him to fight. The second he see's anything hostile... well. You would be better off trying to do the Bug Temple naked, with 1 HP.

Level 131, 566 hp 16 attacks. Sounds like if you go to the guaranteed greater vault in the fgjc you will end up with everything you'll need. Especially if it's a fire vault because then you can probably clear it without the minion what with your dragon scale mail and frost bolts.

Well, I beat it! Thanks guys! Basically, I got my willpower/toughness up to around 30, which is good. I then did the tower.

Before then, I had gained, to my excitement, permeant invisibly. So helpful, esp because I already did the arena. Anways, I literally just walked past the first 4 levels.

Upon entering the room, the Wyrm shot 2 "death" rays at me, so I had to use the Water Orb. My frost bolt spell is incredibly long range now, so i backed him into a corner, and kept on blasting him from the other side of the room. I He just kept trying to confuse me, which didn't work, because I was just slightly longer range than him. I think he stayed in the corner because he "panicked and ran away"... I actually didn't realize that he died, and thought he had just retreated when I killed him. I killed everything else in the room, leveled up to the point where I am almost at my top health level (230, now I around 190) and finally had to use my monster detection scroll, mainly because I could not find him :P. When he did not show up on the map, I flipped, ran to where he had disappeared, and found the Orb. He corpse wasn't there, so oh well but at least that one is under my belt. Thanks for all of your help! Water temple is 100% needed before attempting that level lol. This character looks like he has a fighting chance! I believe that my goal with this one is just a gate closer, but I also want to get my minion to the point where he can beat a Balyor 1 on 1.

Good, usually after the tower just overconfidence or very bad luck can kill you...well, actually still Nuurag can kill you but by that time you'll be a superhero...I think your minion have numbers to kill balors, but I believe they can't cross D:49...you will need new minions for the last fight...
