So, proper no cheats involved troll mindcrafter who wanted to be archmage. So far reached dwarftown.

Picked up precrown in VD (Justifier:(). Waldenbrook has serpent bite, but i think that weapon does not fit neither troll nor archmage.

p.s. As far as I get troll does not bring extra penalties to book reading, which are not covered by being mindcrafter.

There is something with MC and Justifier though. Mine got it too.

As for trolls, I think even if they suffered any penalties to book reading, they would pale in comparison to the class penalty that MCs get.

They do get penalty. Or rather they do not get bonus from character level.
But that is just one of things mindcrafters do not get either.

Well, greater demon killed dwarven elder (can't recall if that ever happened to me before). So no Big Punch and Griff quest reward.

I do plan cross the area several times, so maybe it's time for some mining/gemology ... dwarven smith is also dead... well, si selling in such case.

I had the ratling killed by demon some years back but never the elder, though he was panicking at some point.
What do you stand to gain from gemology? I had it fairly early maxed out, but by the endgame, I had only about 10 crystals of power.
Not that much all things considered.
I guess crystals of knowledge might be of some use to trolls but the effects cap at around 25 and that's assuming your potential permits these numbers.

So, bad news:
- lost few points of St to vampires.
- used all the money on that stupid dagger
- ratling rebel is gone so no free sample of scroll of peace
- forgot to put mana pendant before hitting lv15, so couldn't take proper magic talent:(.

Good news:
-got moloch armor lying somewhere ~D11
-connected 7lb and weapon of dooming... I think I will booze up wand of wonder connect it to one of books I got and train mana, while preherding boars.

You'll have to first find a place to ditch all those gems. My recent experiences with shopkeepers left me with less than 20k after selling stuff to Waldy, Leggot and a random shop.
Sure, they eventually replenish their gold reserves but it might take some time.

So, in nutshell:
grabbed high rings king, did tower, decided to go to Casino....
Then I rembered I planned farm xp on eternal guardians, so bypassed him, checked casino (got farlsayer) and went down.
I bypassed cat lord (thanks to the eyes of mind) and cleared couple elemental temples (used 30+ fireball wand charges in Earth temple, but I don't fancy that place anyway).

Somwhere found necklace of eye (good) and stashed dozen tame giant boars above animated forest. Guess, I should do Frost queen stuff...

Well, reaching library will be a problem with climbing g at 50...
Luckily, I can use that stupid wand to cover for any stuff I feel I need for, thus I started leveling on the eternal guardians using 7lb and stilts to kite.

They give 0.5mil xp each, but for troll it is still long way...

Well, I managed to find that moloch as 'friendly' encounter. I chosed to allow him follow, entered location and got by trident back....

So, about time to make looting plan. My basic idea is to replicate banshee vs animated forest. Well, banshee does not work on plants anymore, so it will be replaced by boars (fast, strong, don't see invisible, don't smash doors).

I presume that some of them will go rogue, but that just turns them neutral and they can be retamed (and likely will fight hostile trees - I plan agravate forest by using fire magic).

Since I have no intention to control them, I think dropping speed is a must (lower speed, more boar cation per turn, more loot). ideally, I will be able to supress messages and w5 (with custom set longish persistance).

Check on stuff:
Boars - 12 above AF, might need more we will see how it goes.

Speed lowering -- moloch armour, boots of slow shuffle, bookcasted slow monster, bloated.

Sight improvement (boars should be more in check if I see them, but that likely reduces spawn rate of trees, so will need to optimize) - necklace of eye, everburning torch, farsight (managed to read wished for spellbook, surprisingly).

Safety meassures - I'llprobably wish for AoLS just in case, should also try to hunt queens stalkers, drink pools for perm invisibility once boars are in place.

DL - manipulation, have both smaple of danger and peace scrolls and two writing sets. I think just killing DL down to 1 and eventually recycling potions at D3 (to get some pots of wonder, to obtain knowledge of wish).

Mana battery: I have two wishes left, probably gonna use one for tomes of order, as these would give me most chances to recycle corruptions (wish is probably worth around 10 tries?)...

PP - I am close to 1k now, PoGA's (from loot and chaos alchemy) will push another few hundred easily. After that wand drain I guess. In theory blessed scrolls/crystals of power can improve PP too.

34 is one of marks where you get lv based hp, so that is 50hp differential. On levelup gains are probably randomzied too (although I think less than PP gains).

So, I went to check boars and instead of 12 found 7 and few boar skulls... from stuff dropped looks like some dragon faced them in corridor and breathed all over them.... (I passed the level extra time then going for eternal guardian)...

I've captchured 4 more and promptly lost one to randomly generated moloch... rest 10 are holding up, but need healing support against trees.. I think I will go fetch 5-6 more, cause so far we holding just next to wall and in end design the trees will be coming from both sides.

Good news: trees to seem be inherently hostile to any non-tree monsters in the forest, so fighting will happen .
Bad news: I prayed for PP recharge and got my ass crowned at N=.... Well, it will be fallen champion archmage then...

Back to the drawing board (my first idea was encase myself within doors and mindblast them - even hostile they would fight trees - but in the end I would need unearth all the loot from area with ~14 death machines(and I am surprised that female boar is not called sow by the way)). And you know, no way of knowing if it is enough loot or not...

I am a bit short on free time, so this will have to wait a bit. (like until Wednesday)

Overall, I am inclined to blast the boars ant let them loose, but I think I would need more boars and more food (although I need claculate that I have ~100 rations from autopickup and pile of meat/melons/etc. being troll halves their value...).

Doors are not that reliable as place is generating non tree monsters and some of them are quite high end (fire giants and molochs are not unusual -- I should have farmed at lower char level probably).

As far as dealing with boars.... I though more along the lines of blessing the lute and playing through doors, assuming I confuse hostile ones, retamed should kill them.
Lv50 mindcrafter can teleport for 35PP so that is ~30 teleports with mine PP pool.

On good news front I have few armors of health (which are good at start of loop) and armor of power, which will be good a bit later. According to notes UL5 has a room with 20% spell reduction(to compensate for under 100 castings likely).
I looked through wiki history and someone claims that weapons of power exist. They do not mention exact weapon, so I am inclined to believe that might have been something like staff of power.

Well, it's in r60, which I would not define as recent.

He also dropped two moloch armors he picked.

And why this should be a surprise? It's still the same monster, wilderness is still the same area. Monsterds do drop picked up stuff, no?

Either, I have very strange luck or it seems book drops are somehow bugged. I will try to compare with my notes on SMC scumming with necros, but currently PoGA drop ~4x more frequently than books do.

edit: after reading notes I've tried few things. My general impression (half based on imgaination) is that after some point (trigger is completely unknown) level drops only one spellbook of each spell and other drops somehow cancel. (drop ratio is extremely skewed I have death ray, acid ball, summon monsters and just one spellbook of darkness).

I've tried reading light and darkness to ground, no new copies.... That is not bad for this char (or his next incarnation), but eternium challenge seems to be doomed (I planned to get lots of magic missile spellbooks in that one). Mmm....

It's not a bug, Thomas wrote that this distribution was the intended one.

Cute theory, but it does not explain:
-drop rate lowering down with time
-book distribution skews - whatever the issue with defaults, light and darkness has ~9% of others. which means that around 1/5 of all books should be these.

Bad thing, I did not keep the track of dropped books in the forest (one small pile is one level above and another should be in ogre cave -- after I developed the theory book drops wer Cure Disease, Cure Light wounds, Death ray/Slow monster - things I'm pretty sure dropped here: -Disarm trap/Acid B all/Summon monsters/SoA/Invisibility/Stun Ray/Web).
I guess, I just need to get another ~20 books to drop and we will see.

Web is slightly puzzling, but it's cursed (I don't believe it's relevant, but I can't be sure) and even if it dropped in forest I can't be sure if that was before or after trigger event...
Overall, spelbook drops seem to strive for set, I guess I will keep running around with char just for science

edit: 6th book - Farsight. I have few wished ones, but that one certainly did not drop before...
7-8th were SoA and another Farsight.... guess my theory is wrong and it is just bad luck...
9-11 - Darkness/Death ray/Knock.

Guess, it is time to pile food and go for fireworks...

80% is a gross exaggeration. I've played many necromancers and the distribution isn't more than 25% which is 1 in 4. This is actually a huge asset in the early game especially if you play a dumb race.

This is really interesting. I have examined the source code and as far as I can see, the code for determining the spell contained in a spell book has not changed since January 2012 at least (we switched our version control system at that time... I don't have the older history available).

It's not that Divine Wrath or Frost Bolt are bad spells. Quite the contrary actually. But for Druids and Necromancers they suppress most of the other spells. A Necromancer often yearns for the library now just to get the basic utility spells.

I fail to believe any of you actually counted percentages after let say first 10-20 books. If you did, we could have a meaningful discussion, instead of guessing drama.

There's absolutely no need to make such unnecessary generalizations. Just read the thread I linked and you'd see there's a number of people that counted and posted their spellbook finds (In my case it was 30 books of Frost Bolt out of a total 45 books, which makes the 66% I mentioned). You are definitely not the only one that appreciates a fact-based discussion.

A study sample of 45 is way way way too low to get an accurate percentage. You need More than 100 at least, 1000 if at all possible to get a somewhat accurate percentage. Even then this would need to be done as a comparison to other classes as a control sample.

I honestly don't get the point. Of course there hasn't been significant research on this topic yet. And so far nobody claimed it either. There were a number of people posting their spellbook numbers and how many of those were of the starting spell. The suspicion arose that somewhere around R57 the distribution for classes with a fixed starting spell suddenly became skewed.

Some further testing would be good. All I can say so far is that I haven't seen such a spell spam in previous versions.

So now in my opinion this could be easily done by the community. A thread would be opened, each player that is interested plays at least one character and keeps track of the spellbooks. Combined and sorted by classes this could quickly reach a sufficient sample size.
But the ADOM community doesn't work together. Instead people here accuse each other, troll each other and in the end no research is happening at all.

a) spellbook create item dropped, which means I should raw chaos myself few dozen wonder potions in hopes of bookcasting it (~1200PP with proper clothes or something like that), so technically this is somewhat optimal
b) most remaining parts are not so interesting (sit on pile of food and drain PP once in a while), so I can't find motivation...

Well, I blasted boars, teleported to safety.... and they apparently are dying if left alone in where..... In under 1k turns I went down to 5 boars left....

No clue WTF is going. Maybe out of sight fighting goes different...

p.s. I found some 1.1.1 notes. Figures, I've tried to set gremlin bomb in room with alarm traps and that failed cause gremlins were not fighting each other. Maybe boars are not actually fighting back....

Okay, so lessons learned:
--need to keep boars safe in midagme (I think in split part in upper CoC)
-- need to keep boars insight - lengthy grind I guess (might want to experiment with blindnes first (don't think it will work, but worth checkinh))
-- keep DL at 3 for potions of wonder --- through chaos alchemy I've generated ~70 water pots and just one pot of wonder.
-- take better care of corruption management (in this effort ~250 days spent...), this means needing to save Khelly...

Bracers of war dropped in minor vault in UD... nature's companion I just found in the pile of stuff from frost giant vault (inner part with ~10 red wyrms was left untouched it looks very much like shirt of saint's inside).
Robes came from pulsing room on ~d27. Room had minotaur mage, couple diamond golems, shitload of frost giant jarls and death oozes. Lots of experience, but un luckily there were also two liches... Trolls don't like playing with ghost lord, so I teleported in grabbed robes and tp out.

Casino has executor (for ~3 million gold). I fear that my luck might be geared into the wrong direction...

Have you considered using rods for alchemy? As I recall MCs level it up at a decent pace, might even get some nice poga recipe or at least age related pots.

I'm not that close to Ridiculously Notorious Goddess, but that likely translates to "you'll get screwed with that book"...


Have you considered using rods for alchemy? As I recall MCs level it up at a decent pace, might even get some nice poga recipe or at least age related pots.
So I actually used one RoDS on 7lb (and found spare ones like 5 minute later) and drenched wand to save Khelly...
Honestly, all I need is pots of wonder and that book. I probably wish for writing sets to manipulate DL since that seems more goal oriented.(p.s. I have clothes of power stashed safely in ogre cave...).

I had the most bizarre Air temple in quite a while...
At front it had random black wyrm, which I dealt by retreating and getting proper slaying ammo.... Meanwhile....
ant hive (also located in isolated part) took apart inner temple walls...

p.s. u pon further inspection Casino actually had Executor, lust for Glory and hammer of gods. I can't recall seeing three artifacts in the same shop...

So, I've got my orbs, my boars (12 at d3) and it is about day 92.

One thing I do not have is healing spellbook. And it's not optional from what I saw in the last attempt.

Good thing, I cautiously enrolled into thieve guild and piled lot of training on climbing in between earth and mana temple assaults.

Got two random shops -scrolls and wands - none of them is really relevant. d45 had greater fire vault, with some weapon and thundrestroke. Quarrel was generated in lower rooms, so I took it although ancient red dragon s were massive pain with their crits.
MT was... well, apparently through the game I did not find any flint. And apparently no amulets of light survived either...
So I lured archmage into left side (gulping four healing pots in the process), got him stuck on entrance in the room, use low PP phial to lit the small area around char (used up three wands of light just to get there) and shot Archmage with thunderstroke.
Well, more like last position I saw archmage, but he was just happy to stand in the dark (I did not lit him) and cast useless frost bolt. It certainly could have been worse.

I've left most of d45 vault, the whole frost giant vault and room of greater molochs (non tension, ~12 in d44) for later leveling.

I guess, the plan is to attack the library and consider doing maze...

So, I cleared rift and library, grabbed stuff in bug temple and did maze (with 12 blessed map scrolls and well charged wands of tp it was rather easy).
Got my healing books ( cure light/serious/crit wounds) and 6 PoGA from maze (also ironfist - useless artifact).

I guess plan is do some chaos alchemy for holy water and booze, do some wands of wonder tricks until I get healing spell memory... and then the grind begins for real.

So, good and bad stuff so far:
-used RoDS for magic writing sets -- should have used pots of Exchange/raw chaos logs.
-affixed AF to DL3 -- I've read sorear's wiki and it also confrims that pots of wonder do not apply spell rarity... for wands I think I went through 3k charges in 1.1.1 without generating wish.
-being level 27 means no stupid stuff like molochs -- I think theory of half char levels applied to monster Dl for generation is at least passable estimate.
- for my taste it looks like optimal speed is ~60-70... no moloch armor this time so I just keep slow monster on myself and piled rings of speed+ nature's companion to get in proper range.
-I guess, I knew before but while dual-wielding shields you can't cast spells except if you bookcast them. Makes no sense at all.

The shield thing has to be a bug, as it as you said makes no sense.

It makes sense if you think from developer viewpoint. Shields prevent from going to spell selection screen. Other stuff like wands of wonder/babbling mouth works with shield. Since book reading does not go to selection, it works too.

I think it is more oversight, than bug, but it's probably worth reporting.


Also, what's with the boars? Can't be arsed to read the whole topic.
Killing by hand is inefficient... 12 boars at 3x char's speed produce 36 actions per turn.

Of course major oversights from my side are:
-not realizing what crapshot is a drop rate of books for mindcrafters
-issues with monster fights while out of chars line of sight.

One more surprising thing:
I think standard believe is that if you PoEx spellbook it becomes, confucius book and than on second step reverts to another spellbook.
Well, that is not true (in r60), spellbooks convert to tract, and tract can convert to confucius book and latter will tansform to tract.
I actually raw chaosed confucius book (on another char) and it did explode. So for exchange/raw chaos properties confucius ramblings is a type of spellbook.
edit: so, I switched to DL1 (have magnificent 10 points of spell knowledge of Wish, heh. On other hand it's ~130k turns and if old style ring engine existed, I would be set, so at least the method is efficient way to generate loot).
So, now spellbooks transform through Confucius book (tract of chaos is DL3, same as pot of wonder).
At least something interesting from the grind.

Hmm... upon further check I think it works as it's supposed to, just tract of chaos has way higher generation probability than Confucius book.

On grind front, I have close to 400 scrolls of ID, 20+ unused PoGA (don't want to increase sight radius anymore), 60 scrolls of magic map... The last two unknown books were Petrification and Earthquake (latter through PoEx). These are like 0.1% of all books according to Sorear... Well, again according to that wiki Acid ball is 10x more likely to drop than Heal (so far ~4 Acid ball books and no heal...)

Couldn't you drink them, then reduce dex with cursed moss and gulp a few !oE to switch dex with pe? Just babbling, not sure if !oE is exactly what you don't want to waste on such a thing.

!oE is like half a book. Definetely not wasting them on stats. Besides having stats in 60ies is really enough.
